Shadowbane : Appreciation Gifts Tomorrow

Posted Apr 20, 2005 by Craig McGregor

Wolfpack Studios announced today that the special 2-year anniversary "appreciation gifts" will go live on all Shadowbane servers tomorrow.  Their announcement is below:

The Shadowbane Two-Year Anniversary Gifts of Appreciation will officially launch on all servers tomorrow morning. These gifts will appear in the bank accounts of all characters who are on accounts from subscribers who have paid for their account before April 19th, 2005. This means that only users who have a paid subscription (not a Free Trial) before A Call to Arms was released will qualify. To find your gift, simply open up your character's in-game Bank after tomorrow morning! If your Bank is full, you will not receive a gift until you make room for this gift and log out and back in.

Furthermore, from April 21st through April 25th, the Powers That Be will use their influence upon Aerynth. This time, they will decreased the cost of retraining Powers, Skills, and Stat Points! While the initial cost will remain the same, each subsequent refinement will be much cheaper than normal. In addition, this cost will decrease every three hours instead of every six!

Thank you all for your support; we will see you in the game!

EverQuest II : New "Station Exchange" Announced

Posted Apr 20, 2005 by Craig McGregor

Sony Online Entertainment's CEO John Smedley announced today that in late June they will be adding new servers which will have mechanisms in them to facilitate "virtual trading" of in-game items for real world cash.  An excerpt from his announcement is below:

Hello Everyone,

We have a big announcement coming out in the press in the next day, and I wanted to make sure you heard it from me directly rather than reading an article about it.

Starting in late June, SOE will begin offering a new service called Station Exchange. This secure service will allow EverQuest II players on specific servers to buy and sell the right to use items, coin and characters. To be clear, all we are doing is facilitating these transactions. We are NOT in the business of selling virtual goods ourselves.

I'm sure this is going to come as a shock to many of you, since for the past six years, we have held the line in not allowing these sorts of things to occur. I'd like to explain the primary drivers for this change from our perspective:

First: It's obvious that a large percentage of our players either don't mind this activity or actively participate in it. We've done a fair amount of homework on this subject, and we believe this is a $200 million dollar market worldwide, and there are a huge number of our players taking part in the buying and selling of virtual goods. We have conducted polls, and the vast majority of players either doesn’t care about it or would like to participate in it. We believe that by allowing this to happen on select servers, we can have a solution for both the many players who want to participate in this and for those who don’t.

Second: Dealing with fraudulent transactions of one type or another takes up roughly 40% of our customer service people's time. We have players calling us up or requesting in-game service for activities related to these sorts of transactions constantly, even though they are specifically disallowed by our EULA. You may ask why the percentage is that high when it's not allowed in the first place? The answer is simple. Many times, people in these situations aren't up front with us about what actually happened. "My sword disappeared from my inventory" comes to mind, when what actually happened is the player has sold the item to someone else. Our CS people have to take the time to investigate this claim because if something legitimately happened, we of course want to take care of the player's needs. We believe that by taking this course, we will free up a great number of resources to deal with other things for our players.

Third: We see this as a potentially interesting model for future games. If we came up with a game specifically designed around these sorts of transactions, it might be pretty cool. Online gaming is always evolving, and we’re going to see how a sanctioned exchange service shakes out in EQII. From our perspective, it's always wise to keep pushing the envelope.

Guild Wars : Our BWE #6 Diary

Posted Apr 20, 2005 by Craig McGregor

Richard Duffek spent last weekend participating the Guild Wars sixth and final Beta Weekend Event.  His diary of these events along with 10 exclusive screen shots has now been posted at MMORPG.com.  A preview is below:

It was almost a year ago that ArenaNet shocked the world by allowing everyone who had an So Friday morning I realize that if I want to get in on the Charr killing excitement I'm going to need a Preorder box... After reading all the nightmare stories online of all the people who can't find them in their area due to being sold out; I was not looking forward to driving all over town to find one. I decided to try my trusty neighborhood EB Games first. The know me there and seem to like me for some reason; even going so far as to try to get me to work there on several occasions. When I get there luckily the manager is the one working and not one of the newer people who don't really know me that well. When I explain what I'm looking for and why I need it he promptly pulls the last 2 copies of the Preorder box out of the "Reserved" cabinet behind the counter and hands them to me. His logic was that if they reserved them and hadn't picked them up by now they probably forgot about them. Well, I wasn't about to argue with him; so I paid him and ran home. After quickly hopping online and handing out the 3 spare keys I had (gratz to those of you who got one, sorry to those of you who emailed me and I couldn't hook you up) I popped the disk in and got it installed.

The installation and patching process was still as amazingly quick and painless as I remember it from last year. And of course the graphics are still drop dead gorgeous, so far what's not to love about this game? The first option presented to me of course is the RP or PVP screen; feeling like I wanted to get a feel for the game again and go through some of the storyline I pick the RP side first. Heading into character creation I decided I wanted to go with my typical tank character but with a little something extra. A couple minutes later I'm logging in as Kunou Everhate, Warrior/Mesmer extraordinaire. Ok, so there's really nothing special about him, he's level one and kinda sucky at the moment, but one day he'll be extraordinaire!

Shadowbane : A Call To Arms - Going Live!

Posted Apr 19, 2005 by Craig McGregor

This just in from Wolfpack Studios regarding the latest update - "A Call to Arms":

More than two full moons have passed since the advent of Oblivion, when all Aerynth felt the wrath of Ithriana the Lich-Queen. These have been weeks of wonder and horror, but new rumors now whisper of… hope? Though the War of Crowns still rages, fought by the would-be emperors of Aerynth, there are new signs that the peoples of Aerynth stand firm against the undead tide. The Conclave of Magi have never relented in their study of recently-unearthed Ardani texts, and have at last revived the ancient science of Alchemy! The mysterious Refiners of the Order of Transcendence have gained new powers, and new notoriety: instead of merely altering their clients' memories and knowledge, they now reshape the very bodies and minds of any who will pay their price, offering a chance to correct a life lived in error. Finally, the new Lords of Aerynth have issued a Call to Arms; Recruiters now shine like beacons in the shadow, calling any who lack a home to join their master's cause. Will these new inventions save the war-worn peoples of Aerynth, or destroy them? Not even the sages know...

Tuesday morning, the latest Shadowbane patch entitled A Call to Arms will be placed on the production game worlds! To view the patch notes for this update, click here (http://chronicle.ubi.com/Articles/News/20050418_patch5notes.htm).

Tactica Online : Exclusive Q&A #1

Posted Apr 15, 2005 by Craig McGregor

MMORPG.com is proud to announce the first in our new and exclusive bi-weekly series of Tactica Online mini Q&A's.  A preview is below:

MMORPG.com: Let us kick off this new Q&A series with the most basic question. What is Tactica Online and what differentiates it from the crowd?
Luke Carruthers:

Tactica Online is a turn-based strategy RPG set in the conspiracy and intrigue of da Vinci’s world. Played entirely online in a persistent world, players control a squad of characters, undertaking missions that affect the ongoing storyline. Designing your squad is a matter of mixing and matching skills, equipment, and characters to achieve the perfect combination. Combat is very tactical, things like using the terrain and paying attention to your opponents’ actions matter, and the most effective teams will be those that combine the skills their characters use most effectively.

Does that sound like anything else on the market today? Our problem isn’t differentiating Tactica Online, it’s getting people to understand the game well enough to know that it will appeal to them!

To read the entire interview, click here.

In addition to this we have also launched brand new Tactica Online forums here at MMORPG.com! Keep an an eye out on our boards for "Trismegistus" and "SaintGermain" - these are a couple Tactica Online devs who will be lurking in the boards waiting to answer your questions about the game.

Tabula Rasa : Transformation?

Posted Apr 15, 2005 by Dana Massey

For many weeks things have been quiet over at NCSoft with regards to the highly anticipated Tabula Rasa MMORPG from Richard Garriot, the man behind the Ultima series. Today, an announcement answers fan questions. The game's official website has been replaced with the following message of changes to come.

Transformation

For those of you who’ve been following the development of Tabula Rasa, you may be aware that the game underwent a major transformation over the last year. We’ve hesitated to share more information about these changes as we wanted to be absolutely confident with this new direction. At present, we are pleased to report that this project is shaping up to be a truly outstanding massively multiplayer online game.

The reasons we have undergone this transformation are many and complex. Simply put, our team felt that the first incarnation of Tabula Rasa was not the game we felt it should be. We felt this way from our own reactions playing the game as well as others external to the team playing it. We believe that the change for the positive will be obvious to all.

Over the next few weeks you will see changes to the Tabula Rasa website. The site will be receiving a major overhaul in advance of this year’s E3 event. You can look forward to new creatures, new features, and new information. Everyone here at Destination Games and NCsoft is excited about the new look and feel of this highly anticipated game. We hope you’ll be excited too.

Richard Garriot and the Destination Games Development Team

Thanks to Moriender at MMORPGDot for passing along the news!

Dark Age of Camelot : Friday Grab Bag

Posted Apr 15, 2005 by Dana Massey

Mythic Entertainment Community Manager Sanya Thomas has released her weekly Friday community Q&A where she addresses the top issues that players have been asking for the past week. Here's a snippet:

Short and sweet:

Q: While for the most part I think the rearranged zones are working well, I did notice that a previously simple quest now takes me into a great big mass of purple cons from hell.

A: Please appeal these as bugs for the time being - the odds are probably pretty good that we didn't mean to do that. If you can let us know the zone name, quest name, and /loc of the problem, we'll investigate and look into making adjustments.

The Matrix Online : European Servers Announced

Posted Apr 15, 2005 by Frank Frisina

With the addition of these two new servers, the European customers are assured they will not miss out on the live events;

The Matrix Online team is pleased to announce the addition of two new servers: Input and Output. These two servers were created in an effort to assure our European customers would not miss out on the Live Event Team’s storyline endeavors. You will see these servers represented on the list like this:

Input-Hostile-EU

Output-EU

As you can see, players have the choice of playing on a hostile world via Input, or an opt-in PvP world via Output. In addition, the live events schedule on both Input and Output will be adjusted to meet the needs of our European players. Players on these worlds will be able to participate in live events a day later than the events on other servers, with events targeted to occur during European prime-time play. For example, if a live event is delivered on Line Noise, it will also be delivered on Input and Output roughly 16 hours later.

While the addition of Input and Output allows us to better schedule events that serve our European community, the new worlds also provides access to those players that are unable to participate in events during American prime time hours. In that way, these two new worlds are open to all, regardless of their geographic location.

We will be opening these servers for your use later today, Thursday, April 14th.

We hope you enjoy the addition of these new worlds and we eagerly anticipate the chance to provide our customers with greater access to our live event offerings.

Cheers!
