Auto Assault : Transmissions from the Wastelands Vol. 3

Auto Assault comes out with another installment of their weekly feature "Transmissions from the Wastelands". Here, players are given a voice to tell stories about their gaming experience, post screenshots and the like. This week's entries read as anything from proclamations regarding tactical nukes to stories to a little bit of free advice.

I feel like MacGyver. I can build flamethrowers out of some grease, a piece of metal, and some glass.

So I finally got the skill to set off a tactical nuke. Someone in command really doesn't know me well to give me this kind of firepower.

Well, it was time to test that age-old adage. I set off to Ground Zero, where the roaches are twelve feet long, and are quite unfriendly.

It didn't take long to get a pile of them angry at me, and now we know… nuclear explosions do indeed take their toll on roach-kind.

It's quiet, very quiet. I am approaching the target, the tang of blood on my bumper's blades and the acrid bite of my exhaust keeping me awake. A cup of Hestia's 'CaffieSynthed' water cooling, ignored on my dashboard as I drive into aged and rusty signs, grinding them into the cracked pavement. I ponder replacing my turret, the old gal I got is a bit too overheated. Doesn't matter just now though, if I don't slaughter these punks I won't have the cash to worry about repairs... God I love my job.

I got a platoon of Corps aiming at my windshield, and two enemy tanks rumbling in the distance. Six to one odds, and I'm not even sweating. The combined thunks of my support team landing signals the start of combat. My turret whines harshly, my grunts split up and search for cover. Me? I am going to ram the tanks, and to Hell with any infantry in my way. I was told I'd enjoy being a Lieutenant, and now I know why…

World of Pirates : Clans Added To Highscore List

World of Pirates have made the clans a part of their Highscore List. The list shows name, the date of the group's foundation, the number of members in the group and ranks them by their number of towns.

The Chronicle : Fan Studio Visit

A fan of Rapid Reality's "The Chronicle" by the board name "CeasarsGhost" took the team up on their standing offer and visited their Atlanta studios to see the team and the game. There is only limited game information - as per the NDA - but the post does feature some good photos and behind the scenes peeks.

As many of you know, I recently made a trip to Rapid Reality just North of Atlanta. It was incredible, and I wanted to give you all a good post on it so I don't have to explain it a dozen times:

First off, I want to give huge thanks to the team of people who actually had to entertain me for the day. You guys are incredible, and your work looks AWESOME. No joke, it was well worth the trip.

Lineage 2 : Lineage II Mini Game!

Lineage II introduces a new mini-game available on their website. It's basically a card matching memory game. It times your performance and allows you to play again and again trying to beat your score. Most entertaining. Here's what they had to say about it...

Shadowbane : Layout and Development Info

There seems to be lots going on over at the Shadowbane website as they announce some new layout options and give us a look at their September update.

Shadowbane has introduced a new "Interface Skins" section, giving players a choice when it comes to how they inteface with the game. Currently, he only available new skin is called "Veteran Skin Layout" and gives players the ability to move back to the old interface rather than using the new one. They are also kind enough to give us a look at the updates planned for September, including a new system of inter-city travel!

The following is scheduled for the September Content Patch:

Bane Window of Opportunity - When a Bane Scroll is placed, the Guild Leadership of the defending city will be able to pick a time-frame within a certain window of opportunity for the second day after the Bane was placed.  If no time is chosen, the last hour of the window will automatically be chosen.

Inter-City Travel - A new system that will allow players to teleport to other cities within a player's Nation as well as any "open" cities.

Message of the Day - A Message of the Day system will be implemented for Customer Service, Player Nations, and Player Guilds.

Dark Age of Camelot : Mythic cleaning up the Aftermath

Every now and then in the world of MMOs, something goes wrong and causes developers and players alike a good deal of frustration.  As reported yesterday, Dark Age Of Camelot began experiencing a number of issues when their patcher came back up. They seem to have things well in hand however, as their website shows various signs of the clean up.

I love fixes that don't require us to take the servers down. These notes are currently live.

Relic Fix

 - Relics held by Midgard will now display correctly and may be captured by enemy realms.

Items - Albion

 - The quilted cap dropped by Bouditha Wynedd for the Thinking Cap quest is no longer the same object as a tradeskill quilted cap. This new object is capitalized, Quilted Cap, and should be No Sell and No Trade. The trouble this caused with crafted quilted cap objects should be fixed.

 - The Albion Legendary Spiked Flails (the Lithic, Tempestuous and Pyroclasmic versions) have been returned to their correct forms.

As you can see, they have things well in hand over at Mythic, and haven't seen a need to shut the servers down for further fix-related maintenance.

Ragnarok Online : Developer Journal #1

Ragnarok Online developer Cianar Cabos pens the first developer journal from Gravity. In this first issue he discusses his position and what he does to improve the game.

If I remember my company dossier correctly Ragnarok first started off as a comic in Korea by Myung Jin Lee. That comic was so good, people in other countries started reading it too and it sort of became an international comic phenomenon. Then, some dude who loved the comic got the idea of making a Ragnarok Online MMORPG in Korea, and lo and behold, people in other countries started playing it and that became an international MMORPG phenomenon. Thanks to new updates and features that are developed and released on a quarterly basis and the enthusiastic support of its player community, RO has endured for three years.

EverQuest II : Antonia Bayle found... In Las Vegas!

Sony Online Entertainment and Stuff Magazine announced the winner of their "Quest for Antonia" contest to be a young woman named Anna Wainscoat. Wainscoat, a California native describes her digital counterpart Bayle as "a heroine, who stands for independence, strength and beauty in women."

 

The resemblance is almost frightening. The new Ms. Bayle will recieve a $10,000 modeling contract as well as an appearance in an upcoming issue of Stuff and a one year subscription to that magazine.

Dark Age of Camelot : Major Patch (1.78)

The Isle of Agramon, the new RvR island in Dark Age of Camelot, has gone live with patch number 1.78, released yesterday. The new island promises to be a melting pot of PvP action.

New Realm vs. Realm (TM) Battles on the Isle of Agramon

FAIRFAX, VA – August 16, 2005 – Mythic Entertainment, developer and publisher of massively-multiplayer online games, today released patch 1.78 and introduced the new Realm vs. Realm (TM) (RvR) battlefield, the Isle of Agramon, into the world of Dark Age of Camelot (R). Located in the North Sea within the New Frontiers, the island is a centrally located battlefield that gives all players easy access to RvR combat and facilitates easier movement between the Realms of Hibernia, Midgard, and Albion.




“Realm vs Realm battles are the heart of Dark Age of Camelot,” explains Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer for Dark Age of Camelot. “They are our unique take on Player vs. Player combat and the reason so many gamers continue to play the game. The Isle of Agramon is an exciting new battlefield that will further intensify the conflict between the three Realms. Now RvR action is only a short bridge crossing away for most players.”

Island Details

  • The Isle of Agramon is a place of varying terrain, notable landmarks, and wide open fields perfect for large battles.
  • Each Realm has access to the island's shore from bridges and small land masses located near the beachhead keeps (Bledmeer Faste in Midgard, Dun Crauchon in Hibernia and Caer Benowyc in Albion). Players may also reach the shore entrances to the island by swimming.
  • There are two milegates per Realm on the island, for a total of six. The main portcullis doors can be destroyed and repaired.
  • There are no guards or other NPCs located on the island.
  • Any player from any Realm may use any entrance to the island without restriction.
  • There are a variety of monsters available on the island to be used as pets.

General : Star Trek Online's Art Director Speaks

Good news for Star Trek fans as Star Trek Online Art Director Ken Anderson speaks on their official website about L-Cars (the characteristic visual computer displays) and the new-look uniforms created for the game. Mr. Anderson discusses his excitement about being able to show this new look to fans both live in Las Vegas and online in his developer BLOG.

Uniforms:

The uniforms in Star Trek have been, and continue to be, one of the single most dentifiable elements of the franchise. We felt that we had to get the uniforms right and that when we did, the design cues and solutions we had come up with would go a long way towards informing how we evolve the rest of the Star Trek universe for STO. As well, we had to tackle the quintessential MMO problem of character customization. How can we make the MMO player experience in Star Trek payoff when we have a world based in uniformity? How can we make our version of the Federation uniforms be personal and malleable enough while still retaining the team feel that is Star Trek? What you see is our solution (well at least 4 images towards it). We had to keep the department colours along with the area between the chin and the chest (shoulder area). These are the key elements of the Start Trek uniform and our design had to work with them. As long as we kept the shoulder area of the uniform "feeling" like Star Trek we realized we could add other elements to the uniform. We’ve also made the uniforms more visibly purposeful so that departments could be distinguished by more than just colours. This has allowed us to add specific features, details and add-ons for every department and every rank which will allow players to differentiate themselves from one another and to wear their accomplishments and progress as all MMO’s allow you to do. To allow for player customization and gear / detail add-ons to the uniforms we had to make rank a much more visible element in the uniform designs...

It looks like Star Trek Online is going to visually set itself apart from what we're used to in the Star Trek universe. This should create a nice transition from television to MMO. To read the rest of this article, beam on over to the STO website.

Istaria : Horizons Announces Updates

When the shards came back up on August 16th, the people at Tulga Games had a few additions, fixes and changes to talk about.

Additions, Changes and Updates Applied To the Live Shards on August 16, 2005
  • Added additional Iron ore in the Nickel Ore Regions and additional Nickel Ore in the Cobalt Regions.
  • Added Beginner and Journeyman Blighted Orb and Blight Core Formulas to Enchanter Trainers.
  • Fixed a problem with receiving the Burning Archer ability at the end of the quest.
  • Corrected the Gangaf quest “Sweet Beef Jerky” so that you get the food parcel instead of Tinkerer's Gift V at the appropriate step.
  • Increased the coin value of Flame and Ice Bone Splinters.
  • Increased the drop rate of Werewolf Hearts from Werewolves on Balit's Isle...

There : There Announces Software Update!

There lets us know about a scheduled software update taking place today.

We will be closed on Wednesday 08/17/05, 6AM-4PM PDT for a software update. If we complete the update more quickly than anticipated, we will open earlier. Customer Support will open at the same time the service opens and will remain open for a period of at least four hours.

This will be the Update originally scheduled for last week, modified in line with community input.  Thanks to all who contributed to this process.

Dark and Light : Dark and Light Devchat, August 18th!

The people at MU are doing some network line maintenance. Players should expect some lag and possible (though unlikely) disconnection.

Guild Wars : New Lore!

The folks at ArenaNet release some new Guild Wars lore. It's called "Chasing a Legend" and features the characters Cynn, Aiden, Mhenlo and Devona in the exciting setting of  Droknar's Forge.

Aidan looked up from his pack.

The Dwarf who had customized his new bow scratched his beard. "The last fella from Ascalon who went out there never returned."

"Who was that?" asked the Ranger.

"'Bout a year ago, a fella named Tasco—"

"Marshall Tasca?" interrupted Aidan. He knew well the tales of the intrepid explorer. A man said to be impossible to kill, Tasca was reputed to have survived avalanches, locust swarms, and the occasional wummpus stampede. "He went out there?"

"Like I said," repeated the Dwarf, "Couple of seasons ago I made some gear for him... An axe, some boots, and a sturdy pack. Then he asked me to put together a dog sled for him. I did as he asked, but he never returned."...

Dark Age of Camelot : "Freakish" issue for DAoC

The folks at Mythic experience technical difficulties with their patcher.  

There were some issues best described as "freakish" when the patcher came back up. Some relics were moved, and are being put in their proper places by CSRs. On the classic servers, there are some keep issues we're going to handle with a hot fix within the hour - which, for those of you who are new around here, means we should not need to take the servers down.

The patcher in general is overwhelmed at the moment, and may return download errors or time out for the next few hours. Please hang in there, try the Pendragon patcher, or go out and have some ice cream - it will ease up soon.

I apologize for the annoyance.
