General : LEGO To Design MMO With NetDevil

Posted Mar 05, 2007 by

LEGO selects NetDevil to develop new MMO.

The LEGO(R) Group today announced it has commenced a working relationship with NetDevil(R) to develop a massively multiplayer online gaming experience to further engage its dedicated and active community.

"As children around the world continue to spend more time online, we are developing new and engaging ways for them to interact with our brand," said Lisbeth Valther Pallesen, Executive Vice President, Community, Education and Direct Division LEGO Group. "The LEGO brand represents construction, creativity and problem solving -- values that complement the MMOG market. By merging the online world of social interaction with physical play, the LEGO brand is providing new experiences for children, as well as fans. NetDevil's technological capability, openness to work with a large community, and enthusiasm for the LEGO brand make them a natural partner."

"Playing with LEGO bricks and developing online worlds are both creative activities. To bring them together is deeply professionally satisfying and we look forward to working with the LEGO team," said Scott Brown, president of NetDevil.

At first I was excited...

...then a friend informed me of the inherent ability to ItemMall this game.  Buying "Buckets of Legos" as the items, and making the game F2P.

Now I'm much more wary.  But still pretty stoked.

As a artist I think it will be great fun to create lego architecture in a persistant digital world. I just hope that land to build on is far cheaper then other online games such as Second Life. I do however worried about such a sandbox style game being marketed to such a young audience. It only takes a quick look at Second Life to see what a sandbox game can become if not given at least a few guidelines.

Ah man, LEGO missed out big time on a great game idea.  They should have formed a partnership with SOE to create LEGO Star Wars Galaxies.  I mean, it couldn't mess up SWG any more than the NGE.

This is one of the more original ideas I've seen crop up in the MMORPG genre recently.

It's amazing how LEGOs is marketing itself but it is one of those toys that really gets kids imaginations going.  It will be interesting to see where this game goes!

Well, they probably won't do anything to impact future single player game sales, however the IP covers Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman and Lego Harry Potter :p

Hopefully they include all from the start and not do some rubbish expansion system. Should be pretty cool regardless and as it's aimed at younger people (ie kids), I wouldn't expect too many leet idiots with Daddy's credit card causing problems.

It depends on whether it's old school Lego or the new Lego. Old school Lego, all you had were different sized bricks, different colors, and a few odd shaped corners and such.  That was sandbox.

Now you have the more popular preconfigured Lego kits. Sure it's still fun to construct them, but the boundaries of creativity have shrunk in my opinion.

I hope it's Old School Lego. Then again, I'm too old for such things

Ah, but it's NetDevil.  If only they'd done LEGO AutoAssault, it might have been a success.  Afterall, the gameplay seems to be about the right difficulty for little kids, it just needed a more appropriate hook for that age group.

Sounds like an interesting idea.  Will it be as good at Lego Star Wars?  Only time will tell.  Might end up getting it for my son if it doesn't cost too much though.
Cheers.

ROFL, so true...

Wonder if this new MMO will have different area's you can go to within the Lego Universe... so there would be a Star Wars area. Now that would rock. Always wanted the console versions of Lego star wars to be an MMO.
