While not an MMO, Bethesda's Skyrim has taken the gaming world by storm with today's release. MMORPG.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy has been up since the wee hours of the morning putting his new game through its paces. See what Bill thinks of Skyrim. Played Skyrim? What did you think? Let us know in the comments!
The story, without spoiling too much, begins like every other TES. You’re a prisoner of some sort, being dragged to your death when something incredible happens that sets you on a path towards legendary hero status. In this case you’re making your way to your birth-home of Skyrim, get taken prisoner as a traitor to the Imperials who are in the middle of a civil war, and are about to be beheaded when a massive dragon appears and starts flaming the crap out of everything. Turns out dragons are kind of mean.

Heading to the store to buy this.. can't wait! This should tide me over until SWTOR, Diablo 3, and GW2 come out. :)
I don't know if I'd have enough time to play this before the others come out. It has a ridiculous amount of material. Plus I want to upgrade my system before I do anything else. Sheesh.
So far im also in camp of saying its awesome and also did not seen any bugs im playing 7 hours now and game looks very good. But some minor things like little handcursor gone now and lvl up im not realy pleased with i loved the sleep way of lvl up it was part of Elder Scroll gameplay but gone now.
Ive been in few dungeons now and thats improved alot compare to Oblivion there all different and looking great.
And i dont like the Map at all.
But movement combat like with 2 hands magic i love alot. Im playing on hardest lvl but its not that hard so far that worrys me also.
But 7 hours is just way to short to judge game.
Still so far im enjoying game.
I think I would lose all respect for Bethesda if they put a panda in this game as a intelligent race. I wouldn't mind much if it was just a roaming creature, but panda I could play / talk to would be such an immersion breaker. But I do want a talking mudcrab that has tons of money. I feel like that would be a good feature to have.
I was actually up till 3:30am, shamefully.
So far, it has been the best of the bunch IMO. It brings back some of the old and a lot of new. I can now say I have a game worth playing till TOR comes out.
Your post is about as close to torture as you can get while keeping it legal. I'm in the SWTOR beta this weekend so I've been holding off on getting Skyrim till after, but it gets harder and harder by the hour to keep myself from running down to gamestop.
skyrim MMO please. Best single player game of the last few years!
Doubtful it would happen. Bethseda have said a few times that they won't even do multiplayer for TES as they want to make the best single player games of the series as they can. I think i'd prefer them to stick the single player rather than risk messing up with an MMO, they make some of the best single players around.
Got it off steam and played for an hour last night and few hours this morning. So far it's pretty awesome but I'm not really crazy with how inventory is handled at all. I also like a hotbar.
Also there is a graphical glitch? that makes the end part of my characters nose kind of pixelated. I tried adjusting AA to no apparent effect. It was also present before and after upgrading my drivers.
Performance is good. Graphics also are good, but the textures could be a little better in some places. I would love more graphical options to play around with in game.
I love that I can switch from first person to third person.
Where's the manual!? I like a manual so I don't have to google every question I have. Would have been nice if they had included a pdf file, or maybe they have. It wasn't in the usual Steam drop down menu when I rightclicked the game.
Definitely happy with my purchase.
Its good.
I just picked up my Collector's Edition this morning from Gamestop the damn box was bigger than a PS3 console box, the statue was super sweet and is now sitting in my corner of other statues from other collector's edition games and soon Darth Malgus will be joining them as well, the artwork book is extremely nice and the super giant map is super as well just can't wait till I have time to play the game :P
If you played Oblivion, this is more of the same. So you already know all the great things.
And unfortunately most of the bad things are the same.
I still find the UI very , very clunky. The hotkeys and swapping with the Q button is just ridiculous for the PC.
The level Up UI is also atrocious. Never have I wished more for a simple, Tree based talent system before! You press Up to progress to the next level, and then maybe press left, or maybe press up (W) again to get to the branch of the tree that you want. Or hey....sometimes you press back (D). These things are annoying me no end, but I will muddle through as of course there is nothing like SKyrim around.
It's just fantastic!
Purchased on Steam.
Absolutely amazing game, has surpassed all of my expecations so far.
I'm going to have a hard time tearing myself away from it to play SWTOR later this evening, I woke up early this morning just so I could play as much as possible (wife is out of town, perfect timing) on my day off lol.
Is combat playable in third person?
I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem!!!
Finally got into a weekend beta test, and go figure it's sitting right on top of what was supposed to be a marathon Skyrim weekend.
Something is wrong when you change the settings. Initially I was getting 60 fps. I started playing around with different settings, low, medium, high, ultra, etc. Tried with AA on/off, Anistropic on/off etc.
Every time I'd change the settings it seemed like I was getting lower fps. Now on high where I was getting 60 fps I am getting 7.
I7 2.8
8gb ram
win 7 64
ati 5800 series with 1gb vram.
Not sur what the deal is....
The controls annoy the hell out of me. Console port BS :( On the flip side it's Bethesda's TES . I would play with 2 bricks strapped to my hands smashing my keyboard if I had to :)
Game rocks, hands down best 60 bucks I have spent this year on a game.
PS. UI mods (I would bet) are going to be some of the first mods to hit this weekend. Definitely looking forward to that lol.
I got off work at 4am and went straight to Wal-Mart to get a copy. I played it until 6:15am. A lot has changed in the mechanics, so I'm still figuring it out. I can't get into the Dual Wielding thing though, because the camera is flying all over the place when I'm fighting with two weapons and my stamina depleats at around 3 hits. I also can't figure out how to block with two weapons equiped. It says to hold the L1 button, but all that does is Power Attack with my left hand.
Also, the author should post a spoiler warning. Telling how things go down the first 30 min of the game ruins the experience. I"m glad I already played through that. I was surprised not knowing anything going in and getting to experience it all. If I'd of read this first, I'd of known what was coming and wouldn't have been so pleased and surprised at the same time.
I would say PC hands down due to the modding that will come in the next few years. I have no idea how modding is for the PS3, but I personally know I don't have enough space on my PS3 hard drive to even put them on.
Responding to the above poster about the leveling up. Yeah, it's a bit non intuitive. I only just realized I can click on the "star" under the perk name in order to buy it. It's a bit clumsy. So, overall this game is incredible but the UI team needs to be fired, lol.
I prefer the PS3, because I don't have to worry about any non-combatibilities, plus it still looks good on there. Also, my computer is 4 years old now, I think, and I wanted to play this now. Oh, and my 32 inch TV provides a better view than my 22 inch computer screen.
Yes, it is verry much so playable in 3rd person. At least melee and Magic. I havent tried bow yet.
So uh, I said I was going to hold off on buying this because I didnt want anything like oblivion. Then the EU players where complaining about the UI clunkyness for PC and I was sure I wouldnt buy it. Then I went to a buddies house thismorning when he called and woke me up telling me I HAD to come over and check it out. He knew I didnt plan on picking it up at least for a long while.
Needless to say after I got back home I got it on steam. It has some aspects of oblivion but it feels about 80% diffrent to me in the first hour or so I played at his place. The UI is far form clunky. Alittle diffrent but its not NEARLY as bad as some are making it out to be. Q to bring up your favorites that you mark from your inventory. Your favorites can be anything. Not having the hotkeys is alittle anoying but if you play WASD format its accessable enough. If you dont like messing with your mouse to select things (which admittedly could be improved) the arrow keys work just find.
TLDR on the UI: Its not nearly as bad as people are saying. Not even CLOSE to FF.
But yea. I was steadfast in not buying it. After playing it for an hr at a buddies house I bougt it. Its just that damn good. By the time I put 60+ hrs in by monday I'll know if I put it on Morrowind level which was by far my favorite of the series to this point.
My PC on Ultra gets FPS of around 30-50 on 1920x1080 which is good enough :-). I have 580Ms in SLI with a Core i9 and a Solid State Drive. Later Im going to pick up an xbox controller, as I do feel like the interface would be easier with that, though until I try I don't have an opinion. Im going to hook it up to a 70" Sharp/Pioneer Elite. I haven't played much, but the graphics are awesome IMO. Also, everything just feels smarter, be it the NPCs, or the way the world flows. Even though the 3rd person is better and I actually prefer 3rd person games, this game is an exception. I just feel like it was made for 1st person. MMOs are better for 3rd person. I think even without the xbox controller, remapping the keys would make the game just as playable as in Oblivion which I had no issues control wise with the PC. There is no way in hell Im going to sacrafice ultra settings on a console or not dive into the mod community in a couple of months. I still have to finish Oblivion and I just got another invite to SWTOR, so WHERE IS THE FREE TIME DAMIT!!!! lol
First impression is overwhelmingly awesome. So much to do, to discover, to learn ...
Already seen much improvement over Oblivion:
- Much better animations: no more floaty jumping in a static posture in 3rd person but real, physical jumps with flailing arms which feels just "right" to give an example.
- Crafting and improving items is great so far: tons of crafting stations to use: workbench. forge, sharpening stone, leather rack, etc. Very similar to common mmorpg crafting.
- More detail to just about everything, bar some rocky textures here and there.
- Great effects like running water / heat shimmering / shaking environments, etc make it feel alive
- So far no crashes: three hours in
- Amazingly well optimized: Skyrim just runs like a honey bee with short loading times and good fps, feels like much less of a resource hog compared to Oblivion
- Much cooler skill system with skill trees: many hard choices to make in character development
So far I am having the feeling its Oblivion on steroids with a lot of aspects and systems done in a much better way.
Hope the goodness lasts.
*is amazed*
edit: playing on PC here, only real downside is a clunky UI, but if you only use your keyboard it works well enough for me
Pro-tip: bind items / spells / potions to 1-8 buttons by first favoriting them (F) in your inventory, then through the favorite menu (Q) assign a number key to them. Kind of unintuitive but there's still a way to keybind things.
Not an MMO all i needed to hear, but my 12 yr olds are liking it... pfft
So far, I'm enjoying it. It seems much better than Oblivion at this point. I have noticed a few bugs and graphical glitches, but nothing that really concernes me that much.
The UI is... painful at times. The perk system (skill tree) can be hard to navigate, and like others have said, I don't like the inventory system at all. All of my problems with this game (the very few that I have) are all with the UI. It was designed from the ground up with consoles in mind. I think I'll pick up a wired 360 controller before too long, hopefully that solves all of my UI woes. Though, it's going to make the character controls feel sluggish.
From what I've seen I'd give it a 9/10. Overall the game is great, but the UI is just horrid.
Just a quick update. My computer froze up during gameplay and when I restarted I was back to getting 60 fps on high. Not sure what happened there.
Also I made a male nord and his facial textures are fine, only the female nords was blocky looking. I could also see graph texture of face over brow/forehead but much less noticeable than nose.
Anyway, playing a male nord cause he looks BADASS, lol. Having a lot of fun so far. Definitely happy I bought the game. From what I've seen of the world and interacting with the characters this game has not disappointed. Just some little graphical bugs that hopefully are resolved soon.
Playing combo first person third person. Third person is very doable and mostly what I'm used to, but sometimes it is nice to switch to first person.
My sneaky wood elf on the prowl right after sunset.
(Autodetect: "high settings". Didn't do any tweaking yet).
Geeezus, what is the deal with PC games forcing us to use console based UI's. Gawd damn their frakking laziness. I don't care how much I love certain development companies. I will not buy another PC game again that uses a console style UI. You really have disappointed me, Bethesda.
Good to know. That's been my biggest complaint so far, switching between bows/melee and different shouts has gotten a bit annoying just utlitizing Q.
Nord hunteress surveys the land.
I love the game. Played it for about 10 hours so far, and it's both addictive and fun. That having been said though, the interface is poor. Is it too much to ask for an auto-run toggle, or for there being an easier way to switch between spells? They've been doing this for a long time, the weakest part of their games is the UI. Would be nice if they address it at some point.
Hell no. No thanks. Let us have some good single player RPG's. I don't need some dude named xXLeGoLaSXx ruining another game :D
Anwyways...Just want to say that this game so far is amazing. Played until 3 AM last night, got four hours of sleep because of it. I've encountered a small bug but that's it. For some odd reason when I bind a favorite to key 1-8, it just gets erased after I use it. To be honest though, my game might not have patched to the latest, it was only a 5.5 gb download and my friends told me there was a patch that should have gone with it, but my Steam didn't want to download it. Might be fixed already. Besides that this game is just amazing. I love it.
And for people saying "HURGH BLURGH. CONSOLE UI, I WONT BUY IT!!!! That's cool. It's not the greatest UI I will admit. You can miss out on a great game. Me and everyone I know will be enjoying Skyrim while you are busy complaining :P
Agreed this is hold me over until GW2 and Diablo 3 comes out...Maybe even if TERA Online comes out :)
Awesome game Skyrim I have been playing now for over 12 hours straight OMFG the PC graphics are just incredible :)
Nothing worse than a lazy developer forcing a clumsy console interface on a PC player. Absolutely no excuse for that.
Good game, but the interface is a major detriment.
Bethesda has a gazillion dollars, years to work things up, and this is the best UI they can come up with??
Yes, the interface is poorly designed. It's the interface, so you constantly have to deal with it's poor set up. Mods for it will come, but it makes me glad I didn't buy the dang thing at full price, and instead tried it on my friend's computer first. I will wait til the price goes down, and the modders finish the game for lazy ol' Bethesda.
Interface is rock solid in my opinion. Love it.
Edit: Also using mouse only for the UI except for dropping items. Really can't see why people think its so clumsy.
Panda's are awesome
Just waiting for modders to create a better UI for me :D
EDIT: Actually I'm gonna be a champ and start working on one myself, need to play more of the game first to get an idea of what to improve :P
Hmmm I must not have been paying alot of attention before. Alot of the npcs sound like Arnold The Barbarian did the voiceover. Its both great (in a funny sense) and terrible in a way lol.
It took me 10 min to get used to... I think I'll be fine for the 99 hours and 50 minuites.
What about the mainstory & side quests? What's the scope & quality compared to, say, Oblivion, Falloutt 3, Fallout New Vegas? I for one hated Oblivion because of how short & bad the main story was...
Same here. Though I am honestly thinking about just spending $30 on an xbox 360 controller just to make games like these easier from the get go. Its not like games like skyrim really REQUIRE every button on the keyboard and 15button mouse to be bound to something. With a controller the UI would be a non issue for the first 10 min and you would still be playing on the PC. The whole point to a PC in RPG's is the graphics, not the 500 key binding options that you may want in other games.
Pretty much this. I'm used to the UI already, but I still don't like it. Think I'll be picking up a wired 360 controller tomorrow. All the games I've been trying to play lately really would feel better with a controller I think (Skyrim, Just Cause 2, GTA IV, Mafia II and Fable III). I'll miss the controll I get with the mouse, but if it makes it easier to navigate the UI (and drive/fly in other games) then so be it.
EDIT: Oh, and at JC-Smith, I'm pretty sure the default key for auto-run is 'C'.
I refuse to switch game from key board to controller. It just add morefor me to make a discision ill prolly won't buy games anymore, if everybody give in the fact that games should played like on consoole or PC players playing on there PC with controller and big screen on couch relaxing with beer and chips you should ask yourself if your still a pc gamer or just want to have stronger console that can handle better graphics with all the comfort a console give but is not yet avaible.
I love my PC build a rig OC and finetune it so i can play them on best settings, becouse i can change alot becouse i sit behind a PC screen and play with keyboard mouse with alot more complex UI then consoles. I hate the symplification in constrolls and gameplay and the overall obvious lack of progress in AI graphics and limited npc/mob population becouse this game is alot more empty then Oblivion everything is dumb down so a console can handle it its pure console port only thing we have is 1920x1080p and AA thats all even tho i serious doub thats even through its just scaled up a little give us PC gamers impression we have AA and 1920. Its clear PC is losing BIGTIME and im very sad about this.
I still enjoy this game but only becouse there is almost nothing left to play anymore thats truely a PC game, but i already have only bought 2 games this year while i in past buying around 15 games a year.
This is now after play 15 hours and my experience how i feel while playing, prolly most of you will disagree but thats your right and i wont argue about that, i stay by my gaming experience with Skyrim.
Bethesda have won for now becouse ive spent 50 euros on Skyrim and can't chamge that anymore, but if ill buy there next product i serious start doubing that.
Does Skyrim scale the level of the monsters you encounter with your level, like Oblivion did?
Sheer awe.
The first time I overlooked the mountains my breathe went away. The combat is immensely satisfying, the magic is rewarding and the whole system flows well together.
I've only had a few water textures disappearing here and there, but nothing major. The UI is vastly improved.
Overall, this is the best and most engrossing gaming experience I've ever had.
I played 7 hours yesterday after work and realy love the game. The only thing I do not understand is, how can they provide such a great and massive game with such a bad interface? It looks like its only 25% finished. The perk tree part is very beatiful but the other 3 directions? Just lists? come on, it can not be so hard that someone sits down and comes up with a few better ideas, you could even just copy them from other RPGs.
I know how "console ported UI design" is a capital sin in the pc community, and I had my reserves as well initially but some people are a little exagerating I think.
After 8 hours in it really doesn't bother me anymore; I only use hotkeys in combat and whenever I need to go into the UI it's; right hand off the mouse and 100% keyboard navigation; once you get used to the button layouts and quirky stuff like cursor buttons not scrolling when you keep holding them but W and S do, it's very manageable. Whatever you can do with a console controller, you can do with a keyboard just the same.
Innitially annoying bits like the crafting confirmation popups can be dealt with by pushing Y instead of navigating the mouse to it, to give an example.
Like any game with a new UI: it takes some time to get all the controlls hardwired, but once you do it really is not a big deal in Skyrim .... imho.
One thing that annoys me...when I killed 3 Imp troops in the forest - thre was nobody there to see me do it. I go into town and the guard stops me and tells me I either pay the bounty on my head or he'll take me to prisom and if I resist he'll just attack me. So how is it that the guard even knows I killed three Imp soldiers miles away from this town - (in the middle of the forest mind you)?
BTW anyone know how to get arrows to go away that your charcter has been hit with? Mine has one in her side and the other goes right through her forehead. LOL!
After playing all day, the only thing that bothers me is that when I rebind a key (say to make WASD the arrow keys), all the associated things do not change to the new key.
For example. I make this change to arrow keys. When I pick a lock, I still have to use the A and D keys to twist the lock, even though my directional keys have been changed. I rebound the keys, but for whatever reason, all actions that use a given key are not together in one binding. This is also a problem with favorites, dropping items, exiting out of menus, and a few other things.
It isn't a terrible problem, and after these several hours, it doesn't really bother me much, save the dropping items. I can move my right hand to the A and D keys to pick locks. I can move my hand to hit tab to exit menus. But I cannot drop items. I just cannot. I can put them in containers, but just dropping them on the ground? Nope. Impossible. Literally impossible without using the default keybindings.
My problem, my real problem, is not that I can't do the things I want to do. It is that it is wholly unacceptable for a game to be released on the PC without the ability to rebind the keys to ALL actions (if you don't want to use a master binding that, when you change a binding, affects all associated actions, then you need to add a new binding in the options menu for every single thing). This isn't a hard thing to do, and it makes life easier for PC gamers. One reason I play PC games is the ability to use the control setup I prefer. And, over the years, I have grown very particular about my setup. I think many, many gamers have done the same (though with their own unique set of controls). And that should be our right. If it is easy, and it makes things easier (or, in one case in this game, makes something even possible), there is no excuse to NOT code it in.
This is also why I refuse to play games without an option to invert the Y axis control. It is asinine and unacceptable.
It is just beyond my comprehension that a company like Bethesda would release a game with such a blatantly obvious problem as keys that simply won't rebind at all.
This problem also existed with the new American McGee's Alice game, and I assumed that was because it was released early and in a rush. But maybe what we are seeing is a further reflecting of the shift in popularity to console games. Developers simply do not care so much about their PC games. Most good PC games now that are not MMOs are console ports or indie games (which may well also be console ports). It makes me sad, because PCs are so much more robust an environment, and you can do so very much with them.
Edit:
Teala - That is some weird stuff with the arrows and the imps. No way you should have been pegged for the crime.
Ah nice one! Good tip pony, I was getting tired of stopping the game everytime to change my weapons with Q.
Absolutely love it ! Slowly getting used to the controls. That would be my least favourite thing. Graphics are gorgeous. I often find myself standing looking at the fog shrouding the mountains! Ohh and the character models are superb. They have a lot more life in them compared to Oblivion.
There are just so many little details that add to the magic of Skyrim... god I haven't even touched the surface of the game yet!
Loving it for now. At first I didn't like the interface, but now I think it's kinda elegant. I like how I can navigate the menus using the mouse or simply with the WASD keys. Still I'll wait for some more PC-ish interface mod.
My only problem was with the classical "favorites menu" since it made me think "why the hell can't I just bind my skills to the number keys?!" but someone answered my doubts for me here.
Another thing that surprised me was how smooth this game runs. I thought it was going to be pretty heavy on my processor because of its small size. I'm running on high settings in a Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz, 2GB of RAM and a GTS 450. I get around 30 fps in the open world and 50 to infinite in closed areas.
Character creator is actually worse in many ways compared with Oblivion. Less customization options. Mods should come to the rescue for PC users on this flaw. I miss custom spells, also. Ostensibly more variety than Oblivion to monsters and dungeons. Still too soon to say if this will be a better game than Oblivion.
It's extremely satisfying to one-shot an enemy with an overhead power blow from my 2-handed frost axe.
This one's a keeper.
PLayed Oblivion when it came out until I realised it's actualy an adventure game with RPG elements tagged on. Your hero progres is non existent since the environment levels with you. The only interesting thing is to do the storyline.
I expect Skyrim to be the same with a bit better graphics. Not a game for me.
It's more like morrowind than oblivion, skyrim is a truly epic experience.
My words exactly !
The PC controls are weird at first but I got into it in a matter of hours
Oh and thx for the pro tip! Didnt knew about that
Oh and can someone tell me how to rotate items in your inventory? :D I only managed to freeze the entire game :D
+ Im still very surprised by how relatively small HW space Skyrim takes... If compared to Rage for example
press C when looking at a item, then use your mouse to rotate it.
The small size is because of the crappy shadows and low rez textures everywhere. The game still looks great, especially when looking at a distance. If you get too close though the textures are really bad.
So glad I got the PC version, because there are nerds out there working their asses off to make hi rez texture packs ;)
Great game for a console port, even with the shitty shadows and low rez textures.
I can't wait for the new consoles to come out so PC gaming can finally get past 2006 tech. Skyrim is great, but Elder Scrolls 6 is going to be a much bigger leap forward than Skyrim was to Oblivion.
Skyrim as a game looks and plays very well on PS3 with large LCD TV. There is enough story in the scripted quest line and variety on the the peripheral RNG stuff as you progress along the main story arc to make the game enjoyable. If you aren't into the RNG RPG sim aspect to the game there is enough in the game to make playing Skyrim a worthwhile prospect for a week or two. Main quest line is a bit linear compared to say Witcher 2 or Dragon Age 2.
I was afraid of that. Can you give us any details? It s easy cause enemies fight stupidelly in combat or it is easy cause of numbers? Enemies do few dmg have low life etc?
Also enemies suck if player is caster or mellier focused?
From what u see playing with 2 weapons ( duel wield makes combat very easy aka cheat almost ?
This is a very impressive game! I have the performance set at highest levels and the whole thing is beautiful, from the toons to animations to landscape. Played about 10ish hours so far, have a level 12 bow shooting rogue cat person thing. Trying out this first run sans-magic, sans-heavy armor, and it's going pretty good so far... died 6 times to a stupid master vampire in a dungeon, but hey, it ain't fun if it's easy.
Looking forward to more, but have social plans tonight. Tomorrow, I guess.
....and what makes it so impossible for these companies to make seperate UI's for different platforms? If they want my money, they better damn well make a configurable PC interface for a PC game. I hate consoles becasue I don't have the dexterity to use the controllers and I'll be damned if I'm going down that road on a PC. Even after 12 hours of played time, the controls still feel awkward to me, especially since I prefer to use the arrow keys and the number keypad over the wasd and number key row. I would kill for a modern day single player RPG that went back to auto-attacks with clickable hotkey bars.
Only a few hours in, but really well executed so far. I'm liking the details and small touches, like a guard commenting to me as I walked by that he knew a good hunting spot, because I had a bow equipped, and another guard speculating on my profession based on the armour I'm wearing.
The UI could definitely use some work, though.
At one point a passerby commented that he had heard "all about your silver tongue" because I had a boost to my speech at the time. Ridiculous. I love the little touches like that.
Love the game so far except the UI and the controls.
"renigged"
I think you mean reneged.
Enjoyable game, spent most of my time (~6 hours) traveling and reading about the lore.
The books sure are worth reading, albeit they sometimes come in clusters of almost 10 (the vampire cave east of Helgen).
Anyway, I recommend it ;)
Anyone else feeling like this would make for a great MMORPG?
Played it since Friday around 1:45 in the morning european time.
Great Game!
Wish the menus would be more pc game like and less console but the font size is nice, its not exhausting to read them.
I play only ranged combat, magic and bow, bcs i dont like hoovering swords and axes making clunky moves with no attachment to my body but it doesnt matter to the game.
Graphics. Music is also great!
The translation and localization of the voice over is the one of the very bests!
NPC have loot directly bound logically to what they be equipped with - how much i like this!
I play on master but until now it seems a bit easy to me or i have already outleveled the region?
Well, give it a good pc UI and it would be a 10/10 !
MMO - well, a game with freedom ends up in chaos bcs some bad apples make the basket rott!
But yeah, if they would manage how to apply rules to the world that make it a reasonable, believeable world, it would be a great mmo!
PS: Steam is annoying!
I bought it today and had a lot of fun simply running around. I actually like combat system (in oblivion it was boring), this Quick abilit selecting is nice for me. It gives me time to select what I want to use.
Graphics are a little meh tbh. The textures need some love from modders. I don't play on max, but most of my settings are high except draw distance etc.
btw. How do I make a screenshot? Pritnt Screen doesn't work. I can;t paste it into a paint and there are no screenshots in any folder.
Nope. I like it just as it is.
It would make a nice small scale mmo.. Like max 100-200 people per server imo. But we all kn ow the momeny this game would become mmo it would loose all cool features. Everything would become static to remove griefing etc.
The online system used in Dark Souls would be cool to use in this game too imo =p
Purchased from Steam, and I am very pleased with the game. Even though I have run into to sudden extreme drop in fps at certain locations, and had the game abruptly crash to the desktop with no error message to go along with it explaining the reason, I am enjoying the game thus far. Those issues and any others that other people are running into will hopefully be fixed in the weeks to come with patches.
But all in all, great storyline, crafting system, and even the graphics (which I turned down to medium to see if that helps any graphical problems) have amazed me. Bravo Zulu to Bethesda on a good game!
if it persists then adjust the sound settings.
Windows 7:
control panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio devices > right click on your playback device and chooes properties > got to advanced and set it to 24 bit. Either 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz.
I'm using 44100 and no more crashes.
Nah, everything that makes it great would be ruined once you put people in it.
Even if you ignored everyone so you did't have to be privy to their every thought or hear every opinion or see every argument comparing it to WoW you would then get people lining up for quest mobs, kill stealing, dancing on mailboxes, dancing in the town square, etc.
Hey, where can we find the screen captures taken in game? I'd love to show you my character, Kahvi Two Arrows(named her that because she has two arrows sticking out of her that will not go away) on her dapple grey mount. :)
What about a co-op game where you can invite a friend to play along with you?
Anyone else incredibly disappointed with the music? I rarely hear anything, let alone anything memorable. All the other ES games had such amazing music, this one so far does not... though I only played like 5 hours so far.
Also, as a few have mentioned, controls seem a bit console-ish which bums me out, but eh oh well. I am getting used to that.
Thanks for asking that I was just about to ask myself. Can't find it at all. including doing a search on the file name.
That I could buy.
hmmm,
the music in this game is like the music in all the other ES games. There is some nice atmospheric stuff but if you listen carefully you will hear music from both morrowind and oblivlion. Including the main theme of course.
I think I found it. Since we have to use steam we have to use steam shortcut for screencapturing. F12 is defoult for me. You can see it in Setting of Steam>Game.
Well, the music was complosed by Jeremy Soule so no suprise that it isn't a million miles away in feel from earlier ES games. He's basically a composer from video games industry, one of the folks who can string a tune to quite a few different games. Soundtrack is the sort of thing you might hear on any Scy Fy high fantasy TV series. Lord of the RIngs movies were composed by Howard Shore. Probably too big bucks for Bethesda to get a film composer to do the job, but would have made it more memorable probably if they had put some development bucks there.
jeremy Soul is a strange composer. he can create incredibly nice peaces of music but at the same time a lot of his work for me at least felt very similar. Still overall I enjoy the soundtrack so far and I'm happe he made music for Guild Wars 2 too =P
Btw. My character. Couldn't resist to post =P
I got the game on steam and i can say that the game needs a very huge update pack for high res textures plus they need to fix that shadows.
Yeah, I was at the 48000, bumped it down to 44100, and still having the crashing. Not too worried about it though, the game saves so much that at most, I would need to do that last 5 minutes prior to the crashing to get back to where I was. Thanks for the tip though :)
IMO: The absolute best offline, single player, mono-avatar RPG's I have ever played to date.
This game is simply impossible to put down...
I have like 150 books in my inventory so far. I gave them all to my partner to carry for now. She's a walking library :p I need 300 more gold to buy a house to store them in. I hope I can get my hands on some bookshelves.
I murdered an innocent person today.. It affected my emotions more than anything ever has. I dragged her body to the river and released her into the current. I watched her drift away..
What an amazing game!!!!
It's crazy how much this happens to me with this game. Not since early high school with Final Fantasy 7 and later FF9 has this happened to me so much. (It's getting late, I'll just play til i reach the next save point--save point reached, hmm let me just see what's up ahead quickly--well I can't turn the game off now, I'll lose my progress since the last save point!--repeat x6 until I fall asleep with the controller in my lap...)
I had work at 8 this morning and planned to get to bed by 11. I started playing Skyrim around 7 while in Vent with a couple others who were playing. At some point, my friend said "Didn't you say you wanted to get to bed a few hours ago?" I thought, "hours ago?" I looked at the clock. It was 3:30... gg
Every small side adventure feels like they only lasts for 20 minutes or so, but 1-2 hours usually pass IRL.
I am so into this game. It has amazing little things that you go "wow...that was awesome". Love all the levers, traps and yeah traps! LMAO! Chased a guy, right into...and well...lets just say he had a bad day. ::huge grin::
Reminds me of City of Heroes back in 2004 when citizens would walk by saying something about your character or his latest exploits.
I am so loving this game. Played 2 days straight and I only have one complaint. I don't like cheating, and the difference between what drops when you kill stuff and what you can carry is really stupid. While I realise this is a form or realism, it's frustrating when you do the intro normally and come out with almost nothing, but try it with god mode so you can carry everything that drops and you have hundreds and hundreds of gold.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Jeremy Soule composing for your video game is like having John Williams compose for your feature film. Do some research, the guy is a prodigy and fantastic at it. I LOVE this soundtrack. Easily the best soundtrack I've heard since Age of Conan.
Good to hear all the nice things going about this one. I'll be jumping into the game sometime in January after I OD on TOR.
Nope. Turn your music volume up in the options. For some odd reason they had it set really low. The music if FANTASTIC. The other ES games were boring, this one I find myself humming to the music, it's that good.
Oh wow, I was enjoying the game so much, I didn't even notice that there was music too it until you guys mentioned it! Will need to turn up the volume then >.<
I love weight limits and it makes the game feel more real.
There are probably guys out there who have their favourite elevator music composers...that still doesn't mean the music is great or that anyone would head to iTunes to download the tracks.
This is one of the best games i've ever played.
Bethesda did a great job.
Thanks that was a help.
I found it in Steam, steamapps, common, skyrim
Sovrath listening to a local bard. I love how, if there are people around, they will tather and even clap and dance a bit. I'm just being a groupie at this point:
For whatever reason the game actually looks better in game than this screen shot. but I find the same thing with LOTRO screenshots as well.
Later, this guy is going go out and solve the mystery of who is murderng women in this town. Three already!
Drop item = whatever your sheath/unsheath weapon keybinding is. It's just the associated tooltips that do not change (which is a problem, but was easy enough to figure out I thought.) While browsing your inventory, it still tells you to press "R" to drop items, even though it is now whatever you changed the keybinding to instead. I rebound sheath to X to match certain MMOs I'm used to and it works fine for dropping items.
Another very great improvement:
Just joined up with the thieves guild. I won't spoil anything but compared to Oblivion it feels much more like a criminal organisation. Somehow in Oblivion it felt like you were doing good deeds all the time as a thief: in Skyrim they are the bastards that they should be, not some kind of kindergarten prankster club. Much, much better.
*Immersion levels still rising"
I'm on my 24th hour straight right now. I can't put the controller down.
Things I've learned:
1) Don't get near the dragons mouth. It doesn't matter if you have a HUGE axe, you'll get eaten.
2) Don't turn your back on Giants. They like to get frisky and punt you across the screen.
3) Diseases blow. Constantly got something on my Khajit. It's mind blowing.
4) Arrows FTW. I cannot begin to tell you how many one shot kills have made the difference between life and death fights.
P.S. I'm playing P.C. on my flat screen with my 360 controller as the M&K made no sense.
I'm still trying to join the Dark Brotherhood. Guess I'm too much of a goody goody.
The improved combat is easily my favorite improvement over oblivion and morrowind. Just added another favorite game to my collection with this one.
That's because in Oblvioin it really was more like Robin Hood. Truth be told it's the only time, for me, tha tI enjoyed playign a thief. I'm not really the criminal type. Though when I did play a baddie I was "REALLY" bad.
I wish these games allowed players to raise an army and take over. But it's all good.
I am so loving this game...just wish I new where my screen captures could be found. :(
Having a blast so far (but also one sudden lock-up too, guess I hit a bug). The scenery looks stunning and I also love the 'finish-him-off' moves. This will surely keep me busy until SW:TOR goes live.
Here, Teala, and I must say your sig pic is attractive, and um, blonde.
edit: just rethought that... where they're FOUND... maybe I'm blonde. Did you look in the Steam folder?
That's awesome. I went the mage route myself, just made the very long trek to the Magic College and now I got a new set of clothes with some nice destruction magic bonuses and I'm now in a class and being sent to these nearby ruins to further my training. Immersion in this is off the charts.
masterpiece just a masterpiece. game is so immersive and i usually don't get immersed in games. I love this game I cannot wait to see what DLCs are coming (not that im anywhere near done with the game).
i mean anyone is on the fence about skyrim if you want an single player immersive open world game where exploring is the WHOLE point of the game (oh and there is also an overall main quest). this is the game for you. so indepth and just downright beautiful.
Here ya go!
Steam, steamapps, common, skyrim
Ha! Thanks - got it!
Here is a pic of Kahvi Two Arrows on her dapple grey!
BTW just so you know - this picture was taken in game before she faught a brigand. The arrows are gone now. Name stuck though! :)
Tha'ts a great horse, what race did you choose?
Breton..but traveled to a Nord village. Bought the horse from a soldier at the stables.
I wasn't a fan of Morrowind or Oblivion so I didn't expect much from skyrim but I have to say. It far exceeds my expectations. Vanilla Oblivion simply sucked. Skyrim doesn't need mods. It's awesome as is.
I already used up one horse V_V
Rode of a steep cliff while being chased by wolves. Poor thing broke its neck and I rolled off unharmed.
Poor ol' Rupert, you shall be remembered!
LOL my first horse I left outside a dungeon. Came back and all I found was a huge pool of blood. :( I think something big ate him.
Anyway here is a pick of my character, Kahvi Two Arrows, and some others from a village killing a dragon! It was at night and it was fricking epic!
Everything sounds like Skyrim plays like a mmorpg... why should I play a Mmorpg solo?
It would make an awesome co-op game. With that said this is the first game where I really feel involved and attached to my character and the world she lives in. Everything about it seems so epic. If the designers are smart they would just run with this title, add expansions that add new lands and new adventures and new content. I'd never play another game again. :)
This is how an RPG adventure game should be made. No classes. Just skills to pick and choose to make our characters play the way we wish to play them. As my character is now she is - let me see...a fighter/magic-user/thief - that can do alchemy and some black smithing. How awesome is that?!
Well, I haven't had time to play. Plus still haven't decided on a race anyway. I've had problem with a possible infected PC (mine) that I've been trying to take care of. If I play too much and need to do a system restore, or the possible virus ruins system files...then I'll lose my Skyrim character/saves. But the sound/music is really good...the music did seem a bit quiet, but I'll turn it up next time I play. Not sure why its low to start with. The sound is top notch though (great ambience) and the graphics are nice. Actually first Bethesda game I haven't felt any want to mod it. I modded Oblivion/Fallout 3/Morrowind to be bigger than the actual game size :P With this, its more or less good like it is. I don't have any problems with the interface either...at most, I'll probably get graphics mods, since who doesn't like better graphics :P Other than that, it is good unmodded (for me).
What do you guys think as a stealth based, neutral character? I originally was a Nord for the first hour (since they fit with the setting), but they don't seem very stealthy. They seem more board and axe kind of race. Same with Orcs...no Orc would go around all stealth like :P
I've always played Bretons, may do so again when I go a magic path. Bretons look really nice in Skyrim. I found them the best looking in Oblivion (but Nords, Orcs and Dunmer are more epic this time round, with Khajiit and Argonians looking really good too). Being a Breton stealth role in Oblivion was fun...fun magic and got to be pretty stealthy. Was able to do both. I did the same in Morrowind too. But, dunno if I want something different or not.
Other than Bretons. I'm thinking either Bosmer (Wood Elf) or Dunmer (Dark Elf)? Dark Elves in Elder Scrolls aren't really evil...and the ones in Skyrim I believe are refugees. Plus they value loyalty and family...which seems to fit the "hero" role, despite their "bad" side.
Wood Elves might fit well. Their downside is they are canibals (or plus depending on how you look at it ;P) and only eat meat. They are fitting if one likes nature, though...but if I wanted a house or something, that again doesn't fit. But, Wood Elves besides that, fit an archer/stealth role really well.
and Khajiit to be honest (the third basic stealthy race), don't make any sense to me (at least if I follow the main story)...Khajiit I believe don't have any allies or like anyone or liked back. I never played them in any Elder Scrolls (not a big fan of playing furry races, but thats just my own preference. It is really weird (for me) to see a humanoid cat/wolf/dog/frog wielding weapons or some games, not even looking human at all, which is even weirder)...however they and Argonians did get massive improvements in aethetics. Argonians especially got massive improvements.
Could not enjoy the game because of the horrible interface. Seems like the devs spent too much time playing old DOS games and not good ones at that.
I would have to be terribly bored to put up with that UI, so I gave the game to a friend, hope he can stomach the UI.
Mmorpgs make a lot of consesions to realism and immersion to make the gameplay work for many players at once. This is kind of a true simulation style RPG, would be kind of annoying to see mobs respawn every two minutes and hundreds of players running around shouting silly stuff.
Nah, I'm fine with Bethesda sticking to single player games like this. Mmorpgs are fun in a slightly different way.
p.s. Just had my first CTD; after maybe 16 hours of playing or so. That's a vast improvement over Oblivion :)
Hehe, nice. I love how the main theme kicks in after a dragon kill. I managed to kill a second one (after the intro one) too but with help from a lot of soldiers. They are really nasty but giants are just lethal .... friggin' giant one shotted me, flinging my corpse maybe 100 yards straight up into the sky (not kidding, probably somekind of bug where the force of a blow misses a maximum knock-back distance). I'll give giants a lot of space and respect for the time being :)
yup as said before.. pretty decent game.. guess they finally got it after releasing buggy games over buggy games.
well done bethesda.
Only complaint is the CTD's I seem to be randomly getting. Game runs amazing on my PC but I randomly get crashes, usually a few steps after a load screen.
Yeah pretty much the only gripe I have with Skyrim thus far is that. I had a similar thing happen with killing a chicken lol. Although i had quite a fun time pick pocketing
Well said DarkPony,
I had the same opinion as you did Lonzo, until I played the game. The amount of content in the game is staggering. While it's not an MMO, it still caters to the same crowd. This game is everything I loved about Oblivion x10.
You're not the only one with stealth.
If there were a MMO that played like Skyrim I'd start a blood / sperm (not at the same time) donation ponzi scheme to support my new addiction.
Sadly, your statement couln't be any more false if you signed it "aka Jesus".
Redguard here, for those who are interested in playing a Redguard there are alot of treats in the game for you storywise and random encounters, there are also some cool stories in the books about what has happened in Hammerfell. God I with these guys made an mmo or at least persistent worlds like NWN.
I also hope that with recent events in Hammerfell that they make a Hammerfell game like this one. If you don't have this game buy it and buy it now, its a great timesink till SWTOR or GW2/TSW come out. It really is that good. I am not a fan of Euro fantasy rpgs usually (though I am looking forward to GW2) but I am a huuuge TES fan because it feels like a WORLD, not just the world of England.
Got the game today and after an hour of playing, i'm still glad i didn't buy it.
So far i haven't been far enough into the game to notice that much of a difference to Oblivion, which i have played alot -except for the visuals (playing on everything as high/ultra as possible, game runs good)
Don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, but so far the basic concepts about the gameplay are all the very same. Roaming around, finding dungeons, lockpicking chest, searching bodies, taking stuff from desks/altars/skeletons etc., while you level up for nothing.
The UI i find annoying though, fiddling around with it is all but intuitive and totally dragging me out of the immersion.
I will wait until there is at least a UI mod and texture pack and try it again later somewhen.
The game is pure awesomeness. I've just killed my first mammoth, which was *pretty* hard, considering it was guarded by several giants and in company of other mammoths as well. I had to separate two mammoths from the herd and lure them out. I then managed to kill one after I sunk in 100+ arrows. I then just grabbed the tusk and ran for my life.
These things sure are hard to kill. I do feel like a poacher now, which is kind of bad. Sorry mammoth! But they made me do it!
I really lost all excitement for the upcoming MMOs right now, because I'm completely absorbed by the world of Skyrim.
To the "screenshot people": If I make screenshots using F12 steam shows me all made screenshots after I close the game. Including the option to directly upload them. Very handy. Maybe you should actually close the game every once in a while! ;P Well, or you actually just didn't use it and wanted to find the screens later. Would be kind of reasonable to save the screens not somewhere in the steam folder, but somewhere in the user's picture folder, wouldn't it?
Skyrim is a console port. I guess if you are using a PC with mousie, then might want to think about a gamepad for now. Not all games are designed for mousie point-an-click these days.
Goddamn! I'm at least 6 weeks behind the extended date for my work assignment, have another assignment (legal module in Dec) due end of Jan, need to update my Pc to play SW:TOR, organise my trip to Asia for Feb 12, and now you are all telling me that vanilla Skyrim is single-player RPG goodness!?
*sigh*
Fortunately, I'm patient and by the time I get round to playing Skyrim (I'm still not done with Morrowind! Yet to play Oblivion), there will be Mods goodness! Hopefully, something along the lines of the 'House of Earthly Delights'.
Dating? Social life? Both have had too many troughs recently compared to peaks, so if I get my butt into gear and focus on work, work assignments, upgrading my Pc, I'll have oodles and oodle of gaming goodness!
Keep this thread going, folks! I love reading about your experiences. The screen-shots that you've been posting are nothing short of awesome (love the two arrows :P).
P.s. Killing innocent people, dragging their bodies to the river, dumping them and watching them float away? I NEED to buy this game! That's just so frickken' awesome! In a non-psychopath way, of course ..
Also, it does not take that long to get used to the interface, but suppose you can always wait for mods.
Considering the game series started on PC then moved to consoles, and considering the game is sold on both platforms of PC and Console, and considering yet again that Bethesda is a multimillion dollar (if not more) game company, then I don't feel it is unreasonable for a PC player to expect that the game company would create a proper interface for both platforms. It would be exactly the same for a console player to complain if they ported the game from a keyboard/mouse interface and made it more difficult than needed for console players who use a controller. It seems to be unexpected apathy in a company that otherwise seems to work their ass off to perfect their products. And can afford the extra work involved.
Ok onto my impressions of the game.
Since I was deeply dissapointed with Oblivion and Fallout 3 I decided to wait to try Skyrim before I bought it. Luckily one of my co-workers grabbed a copy then had to go work a sixteen hour shift, leaving me to slash and bash my way through Bethesda's new epic for a few hours.
What can I say, the game world is gorgeous, mountains truly look towering and hostile, the combat feels pretty darn fluid, hearing my character gasp and grunt as he swung around a massive two handed hammer and actually got too tired to wield it, was an excellent touch of realism. The Voice acting is good, the NPCs and monsters (especially the drgaons!), not to mention even the default player charcters all look fantastic. The story line seems solid, though I spent most of my time exploring, stealing, and attacking anything i could for the sheer unbridled hell of it. From what I saw today it looks like Skyrim really does deserve the high priase it has been getting.
That said, now we get to the warts of the game. Many of them annoyances from Bethesda games long past.
Very unfriendly save game option that has been around since at least Morrowind. Hate it. I like to play multiple characters and having to wade through what save is who's is a blue arsed baboon btich of a time. Not sure if this is because that is the way the game has to be for the consoles or because Bethesda just flat doesn't care, but for whatever reason it is a big turn off for me.
Start a new character and have to trudge through the game intro all over again. Sorry but there is no freaking reason for this. While not a big deal its an annoyance that does not need to exist.
Old fall back of The Chosen One story line. Man I am so sick of this little cliche in flims, books and games. Not everyone feels the need to be the one and only true badass in a game world. Sometimes its nice to just be one of the helping hands. Or even a conniving gutter rat who steals their shiny things. Being set up as the messiah actaully cheapens the game experiance for me. It gives me a feeling that I can't really lose and that none of my actions really matter that much in this nice open game world because I really should just be charging on to my destiny and sod the flipping flowers along the way.
The game UI has contracted chronic consolitis again. Sorry but such a massive company should have the courtesy to tailor the game interface to the platform it is played on. No ands ifs or buts. If they can release multi language versions they can do this simple task. And if they had gone the other way and shafted the console players I'd be supporting their case as well. It isn't my dislike of the console industry talking, but my dislike of companies who can afford not to, cutting corners that make the game experiance less than it should be.
Saddling DVD disk buying games with Steam (or windows live), sorry but screw you Betheasda. I actually like and use Steam from time to time (I personally prefer direct2drive for digital purchases) but there is absoloutely no rational reason for doing this. There are a plethora of file servers for game companies to host upgrade patches, most gamers are computer savy enough to know how to find them without big brother holding them by the hand. And the argument that it prevents piracy is laughable as there was already a no steam crack out for PCs yesterday. And the Xbox pirated version of the game was in the wild last week. So this is just another case of a third parties maketing strategy being foisted on the game buyer. No thanks, I don't need to be given a Tescos shopping card when I shop at Sainsburys.
Hearing the Bethesda studio head continually bitching about how tough it is to code the game for the PC as compaired to the Console. Suck it up butter cup, you guys are laughing all the way to the bank. If you've become so jaded that your job, in fact at least half YOUR BREAD AND BUTTER has become too tedious to create, step down and let some more determined talent take over. Stop alienating a decent portion of your customer base, some of which have been around since the days when PC was the only option.
So final verdict for me?
All in all its a great game, but the annoyances (most of them seemingly bafflingly unecessary) I mentioned are going to keep me personally from buying the game for now, as I already have a couple of other games to spend my free time with.
Gamepad is good for ui but mouse for moving the camera and fighting is 3 times better. I couldn;t stand fighting with gamepad and I don't know how anyone would want to use it.
btw.
Who cares about dragons when we have things like this:
So cute =P So far Skyrim reminds me of the whole war of independence od Scotland.
Heilan Coos' seem popular in games atm, rift has them also.
It just gets better and better since I abandoned the main quest and all the political hubris and joined the thieves guild. Best single player sandbox experience I ever had. Compared to all the goodness it brings, the (current) lack of a perfect UI is a very, very small offering. It's Oblivion + Morrowind, squared.
Only thing I really need is a house in Riften. Curious what the prerequisites are because the steward won't talk about any real estate yet.
I am sorry if this is not the proper thread to discuss this but after watching several youtube videos I am quite frankly astonished at how casting spells work in this game. Please correct me if I am wrong but does one open the menu and pick a spell and place it in either your right or left hand then you shut the menu down and proceed to cast it by either using the left or right mouse button.
I am talking about keyboard and mouse here and I am horrible with controllers so please refrain from suggesting I switch to it. I just want to know how you are all casting spells and fighting and how you aim once you navigate out of the menu. I rather also play only in third person view.
To be perfectly honest it looked very stuttered the fighting because this chap kept going back to the menu and switching spells from healing to some kind of attack spell and it was so very clumsy and cumbersome I was honestly thinking he was playing it wrong. Is there anyway to map the spells to the keyboard or some other method to get a spell far more easily and with less navigation involved.
I notice you swing a sword more naturally and it seems very intuitive but casting spells seem very counter intuitive like you are standing there opening spell books then checking table of contents to see which spells to cast then equipping it and by the time you come up for air you should be roasted to a crisp by a bored dragon. However all combat is frozen while you dither about picking a spell to cast.
Very well written agree on most your saying here and sum up same problems i have with game.
I still play it and its a great game world to explore in but i still have alot mixed feelings about game its a very dumbed down version even more easy then Oblivion. But world graphics and design to explore are unmatched and superb.
So for part exploring freedom and grahics(would have been higher if game was specially made for PC in DX11) 9/10 but for downside 7/10
When you're in this context menu (it's under Q so it's easy to press) you can map spells or items from it uder 1-8 so it's easy to switch spells during the combat on the fly. =]
Ahh thank you twilight that eases my concerns.
If you go into menu game is constantly paused so all casuals can play it game is very easy even on hardest settings very dumbed down version game is alot more easy then Oblivion and not made for PC at all.
But still enjoyable to play becouse of freedom and open world to explore its beautifull even its DX9 XP game.
I love it how they are totally frighting experiences. When I wander the landscape and see one circling over a place, seeking for apparently me, I really feel like cover behind some rock!
Awesome large sandbox world, it really looks like a grand painting. Only the characters still look a bit ugly, teh. Other than that, another dream RPG! :)
EDIT: I really wish horses were immortal. It just sucks to pay 1000 gold and blammo dead. :(
You know what I find awesome is all the little side quest...that lead you to areas to explore where...you find little things that turn into a makeshift home-made, quest to find a particular place, thing...just awesome. :)
Also, anyone else feel, while playing, that you hear soundtracks from Conan the Barbarian playing in the background or maybe Lord of the Rings? Game just brings out the feeling of being in a land of high adventure. :)
Yeah. But only after I cranked up the music volume. Somehow by default it's much too low. Atmosphere is amazing.
While the graphics are amazing the questing and "open world" is bleh. I don't want the ability to travel to different cities for different quests at different times. I want to know that next city coming up is next objective and I'm done with this stink hole I'm at currently.
My friend bought it, I played it for about an hour while he played with his kid and I certainly won't be buying it.
I prefer linear games too. Always loved FF for this but there is a main storyline in Skyrim too which leads you from place to place. If you don;t want to don;t wander off.
I just killed my 1st dragon and can use shouts.. yeah! =P I loved the moment when a mage asked me about a tablet from some ruins and I already got it earlier. He was all like.. omg you already got it? Nicccee. =P
That's a result of the normal maps they're using. When they baked their normal maps from the 3D models, Bethesda's artists didn't smooth those sections out.
There is a fix for it though. Someone actually made a mod specifically for that..
If you're on PC, it'll fix it right up and smooth that out. If you're on Console.. not sure what your options are.
Admittedly, that was a rather sloppy oversight on their part.
I made a quick panorama from the area around Solitude: clicky for big
Heavilly compressed to make photobucket eat it though. In game it looks just dead gorgeous.
Wow...that is awesome pic DP. ^_^
Want to Trivialize your entire Skyrim experience?
Do the misc quest that has a blacksmith asking to find his dog.
I wont give any details to quest to keep spoiler free but the dog is your compainion during the quest and hes unkillable.
He tanks every mob even dragons. makes everything so easy i asked him to go away.
Sincerely when Skyrim mmo arrives dont buy it.
And just for your info ,if sometime in future Skyrim online comes your single player Skyrim will still run in your pc.
That being said i dont understand what the Helll no thanks part.
Awesome. That's my next destination after I finish up these Magic College quests. I want to check out the Bard stuff in Solitude, the bards in the inns told me to go there. Wonder if we can play music at all or something to do with them?
Some people can't tolerate the idea of other people playing and enjoying a game that they don't or wouldn't like themselves. They want everyone to like and play what they like and play.
You know, the whole, "I don't care if others like playing it. If I don't like it, it shouldn't exist" mentality. We see it constantly around here and on other sites with different MMOs.
Have to admit that Skyrim has the actual feel of an MMO compared to most RPG I have played, and this is my first time playing the Elder Scroll series. Also it seems better than Dragon Age, let alone for me Dragon Age 2 was a failure, and their release of DLC meh didnt like it.
Now the real question I forgot the dragons name buth the one on the mountain, Kill the Dragon, or let the dragon live O.o?
At least the game itself isn't actually about just go Here collect these turn these in, and lame repeat quests, although it would be very nice if there was a online version of Elder Scrolls, possibly a MMO very similar to Skyrim, the only difference is that data is stored and saved via Server Side, it would be free 2 play or P2P, and allow players to interact, chat, and play together like Guild Wars kinda would be awesome, the only difference is that you could CoOp and do quests together, with friends, repeat such questions dungeons etc and it would be marked as a repeat quest after completion of the first, but everyone would follow the story line, and it would always have developed content/addon purchases to support the game and be ever growing. Also I am not talking about a game that works through a service like GameSpy because it just doesn't work that well found that out with Border Lands for example it says multiplayer, but really its multiplayer through GameSpy never anyone there really. Overall the feel of a MMO game like this would be great and wouldn't be like OMG NERF THIS, OVER POWERED!, however this is just an Idea for the developers of this game aka all the big guys with the money, and of coruse the game would also possibly have pvp maps, servers or something that allows players to take a side between the empires/faction and do combat and such for control over the land as well as fighting dragon attacks and such just a thought.
Over All looking at Skyrim it is very detailed looks like they actually put a lot of time into the design of this game, and it seems that I have actually played it longer than I have played when it took me to beat Dragon Age, and for a 5-6GB game that seems really under the limit compared to Dragon Age which is over 10GB and doesnt seem to feel as real as Skyrim, or Elder Scrolls 5.
I'm enjoying the game. It did take some getting used to at first. I have played all the previous games on the console, but decided to go the PC route with Skyrim. It is definitely a bit clunky on the PC but after few hours I started to get the hang of things.
I ran into trouble because I made some keybinding changes: "F" to interact instead of "E" which f'd up my favorites. The UI shows to hit "F" for favorites but it is actually still "E". Tells me to press "E" to steal things, when it is actually "F". Minor issues once I figured it out lol.
I have had several CTDs (crashes to desktop). I only have about twelve hours in and have had four CTDs, which apparently is low compared to some others. I made a change to the sound properties of my system as instructed and rather than CTD it locked up instead. It's ok, I needed to go to bed anyway.
The game itself is a lot of fun imo. I love the magic in this one. I was never much of a magic user (only the stuff necessary) but I've noticed myself using it a lot more in Skyrim. This brings up a problem though. You can only have 8 items bound to 1-8 and if you use a 1h weapon, shield, and a bow, you're down to 5 keys for quick access to spells. I use 1 for sword, 2 for shield, 3 for bow, 4 for heal, 5 for heal other, 6 for fire spell, 7 for buff, 8 for conj spell. With this set up it is pretty limited, but I think it's mostly because of the way I'm building the toon.
Anyway, the postives far outweigh the negatives. The dungeons are amazing, the monster battles can sometimes feel like epic battles, and its always nice to get off those rails and do whatever you want to go do.
Worth the 60bucks imo.
Actually Skyrim plays much more like a mmo than any of the previous installments.
With the new quest system its impossible to run our of quest content (just like a mmo).
However, due to this system Bethesda got rid of the respawning dungeon enemies that would repopulated dungeons three in game days after you cleared them. So now a dungeon will stay empty forever.
Bethesda refocused the game to target quest content over random dungeon, ruin and cave exploration like in passed games.
Thankfully the game offers over 150+ unique dungeons to explore and supports mods.
Not true. Most dungeons repopulate.
Do I want to play the new single player game with a wide open virtual world? Or play the new MMO that has a closed, fixed world on rails?
Sigh.
The dragons, though, are wimps in this game, a bit like swatting a fly.
I really don't understand why people complain so much about the UI, i think it is awesome on PC, the best Ui i have seen for fps like combat on a pc platform. You obviously have everything under your left hand fingers this mean swad movement + "a" "e" keys, tab shift and control. Just great.
If you compare it to any other fps rpg game out there where you have to stretch your finger in keys that are totally outside the fps specter this setting is just great. Sure you have to play with favorites and re-asigning them often, but really is it that bothering? certainly a lot less than having mmo control for an fps like game. I'm pretty sure all fps players will see the great advancement this UI setting is bringing for a rpg games with fps combat, now its clear that some mmo player will not like it. But those people aren't very used to fps and don't know much about the differences between fps controls and mmo controls and won't be able to see why this UI is really nice, because they think they can have f1 to f12 and 1 to 0 keys, with skills bars and all this kind of crap. Any fps player will know this kind of mmo setting make no sense for fps control, you need to have it all around the swad and on the mouse, which is exactly what offer Skyrim UI.
Tdlr the people complaining about the UI have no clue what they are talking about. Also the tab is used for the esc key to go out of the menu, just like i pointed, look at your keyboard and see where those keys are. Ye tab is just a key away from swad, esc is way up there where you need to stretch your finger to access it and most probably would have to loos contact with your swad key. So people before complaining at least try to understand why they did that that way.
The game is just awesome, look great, combat is superior to any other rpg. Now i have to go play, sorry guys....
I wouldn't go that far but I did amp up the difficulty because the dragons were a bit easier than they should be. I think I'll up their damage once the toolset is released and that should solve the problem.
Once i got used to the UI the game took off...there is so much win with this game its not even funny. Easily the best rpg i have ever played.
Have you seen a dungeon repopulate? i've cleared around 20 dungeons so far and slept for a few days to see if they respawned and on the map they still say cleared and when i went back they had the same dead bodies.
Maybe you're referring to ruins and camps? those respawn.
If your above level 25 and actually focused in a particular perk tree up the difficulty a bit.
With crafted and enhanced armor alone you will rip most of the game a new one if u dont up the difficulty.
Too many people, including the ones that are shamelessly gushing about the game, claim that the UI was optimized for consoles not for PCs. They generally close with something like, "...but after a while I learned to deal with it". That tells me that you need to adapt to a system that wasn't well made to start with, but not so bad as to make the game unplayable. A good UI lets you slide right into it within a few minutes, with little or no headscratching.
Nothing breaks a game faster for me than a poor interface, which nearly all console ports share. I'm still going to wait for a decent mod to fix that up before I try the game so I don't start off playing it with a sour taste in my mouth. I'd hate to have an otherwise good experience ruined due to a goofy interface. I suspect that I'll still be able to buy the game a few weeks or months from now when many of the other rough edges have also been smoothed over by a dedicated modding community. Maybe it will even be a Christmas present to myself.
I plugged a controller in. People bitch so much. Just shut up and use a controller or take the 10 minutes and learn the UI with a KB+M.
Hehe, you are much too harsh on the UI, seriously. It was a concern of me too before I bought it but you get used to it soon enough. It's nowhere near as complex to master as games like EVE or X-universe, or FF games and its quirks are minor, at least when you don't start remapping keys I suppose).
Saying that all games should let you master the UI in just a few minutes is pretty weird to hear from anyone with extensive gaming experience.
You just need to learn what some keys do.
Like I said before: maybe the UI is not perfect but using it as an excuse to not play it at this time, would be declining going out with Kate Perry because she doesn't wear clean socks.
This game would absolutely rock as a MMORPG
It would be the ideal sandbox (despite the fact it has a leveling system).
The possibilities are endless. Player thieves would be an issue of course. Do you buy a house in a town that forces you to pay taxes, but offers you protection against thieves? Or do you build it out in the wild, set traps, and hope for the best? Or maybe you hire bodyguards to protect your house.
Maybe you can get an oppurtunity to 'brand' your gear. SO if a thief does steal it, and he gets seen my a guard, hell be arrested and your stuff will be returned to you (you are friendly with the imperials right? If not, good luck getting that gear back after all)
Of course the PvP aspects like that would have to be carefull thought out with appropraite (HARSH) penalties for doing so and the focus be more cooperative. But a foundation like this has endless possibilities
Unnecessary apostrophes are not.
i' love' a'pos'tro'phes' so' much'
*looks at the date*....*looks at his steam profile* 40 hours played...
Sleep, I should have some...eventually...
Or if you're playing it on PC, just use this respawning mod that will reset the mobs in every cell in as little as every 1 game day! Its nice to always have mobs everywhere you go, and if not there, just wait a few days to make them respawn.
Ah the power of Mods...
I actually have to disagree with you here, Pony. To me the UI is more akin to not going out with Katy Perry because she had her eyes in her feet, her teeth in her nose, her breasts on her knees, two left arms, one leg backwards so could only walk in a circle, and her lady bits in her ear. Oh and every time you tried to get friendly with her she, as an act of endearment, kicked you in the naddgers.
Not a pretty picture, nor synonymous with symmetry or style.
You may be willing to put up with a wonky interface in order to enjoy what would otherwise be an excellent game. To some of us though it is like being forced to eat a gourmet meal with chopsticks carved from turds.
Once the fanbase mods a more user friendly interface I'll most likely buy the game, if something else isn't clamoring for my attention by then. Until then it is MY decsion whether or not to reward a company that doesn't seem to see me as an important enough customer to cater to. And frankly I feel companies would stop this kind of happy horse shit if customers would put their foot down and demand a change with their wallets instead of just diving on every new title like some slavering, starving zombie after the next skull full of brains.
15 hours in now. Haven't had a crash since the first day when i was messing around with the graphical settings. I just settled on high and left it alone. It could look a little better...I think it's some of the textures. I would rather have smooth gameplay without slow downs though, so I'm keeping it on high.
So far....this game is soooo awesome.
Some criticisms though. Like so many have said, UI is not the greatest on PC. It would be nice if I could bind some of my powers to my G keys on my logitec gaming keyboard. I need to play around with that more.
Inventory is killing me. I need more! I hate to do this but does anyone know off hand of a console command for this. As it is I am spending a lot of time on inventory and trying to manage it. I have converted a keep I cleared into a temporary home till I can buy one. Been storing things in there...hopefully it all doesn't just disappear.
woops, I just read if you use console commands it disables achievments. I don't want to do that.
There is a mod that supposedly increasing your encumbrance by 500 with each lvl of Stamina chosen, but reading through the comments suggests its kinda buggy. I also read there is an item in-game somewhere that increases your carry weight by 1000lbs, but I forget if it was said what/where it is!
Also I do believe in one of the perk trees, forget which atm, but about 1/2 way up is a beefy increase to your encumbrance.
Personally I like the encumbrance threshold being kinda low, requiring me to be choosy in what I can keep in dungeon adventures. You can always go back and pick up more later...
Guess it depends on which ones, as I use the "Field of View" command FOV 85, to expand my view each session and I'm still earnign achievements. If its a blatant cheat though, then ya I could see that effects achievements, and I wouldn't use those to begin with.
Hopefully the Creation Kit will be out sooner than later and much better mods will get released. Granted though, what has been released is not bad thus far!
Buy house its help alot:)
One other thing I noticed. I guess it doesn't bother me but it does stand out a bit. My male nord is a big beefy bearded guy. But his voice when he grunts sounds very...youthful.
His dragon shout is ok....just the grunts and noises he makes sound very young....like 14, lol. Is there a setting or something in character creation that I missed which changes the grunts your character makes? Or I wonder if the age slider does this...I did have the youthful slider turned all the way toward the young side because I didn't like the wrinkles.
Yeah I found a guy that sells a house, but he's asking 5k. I'm at the 3k mark at the moment. It's on my list though! Can't wait.
And completely unrelated, but I love my traveling companion. I was giving her stuff to store for me and then realized...hey she's wearing it!
No deeper grunt noises that I know of, but I play a female and never checked the male options in-depth, however, you can be sure there will be a custom mod aimed directly at this eventually.
Can you say worth the wait, Bethesda completely out did themselves with V.
Everyone go Here:http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1257566-potential-shadow-fix/
And FIX SHADOWS. So far shadpows in scyrim were incredibly pixelated. With those seeting they are very nice and smooth. no more flickering etc. turn off tree shadows and land shadows (intead of 1 write 0) if your pc isn;t that good since you pump shadows maps to ultra with those changes.
I played it for around 20 hours now.
There are some bugs, but holy macaroni, WHAT A GAME. I don't even care about the negative points in the game anymore. It is just that brilliant for me. This is the game of the year. By far.
Well, how long did you actually get to play the game so far, TC?
And would that be a long enough time to get used to a new UI in your opinion?
It's only partly bad design, there's also a learning curve, and some adjustment time involved to hardwire efficient use.
After getting used to it (how to hotkey spells, pots and gear, use tab instead of escape, using wasd and E and R for navigating the UI etc) I have not many qualms with it; it only becomes really annoying when you use the mouse instead of full keyboard control.
But you are right in saying that it SHOULD have been optimized for pc users and its a rightful point of complaints. So far it didn't stop me from having a blast though. I'll just hope they come with an official patch to improve it rather than rely on the modding community.
Great picture!
I was 1K short and couldn't wait anymore so i used cheat code to get rest of the money. I really needed a house to store items. ;p
MMO Companies - Take notice. This is what your games are missing:
Huge world
Lots to do - not just a series of predictable quest hubs
A REAL sense of exploration
I've had more fun the last 2 days playing Skyrim than I've had in the last 2 years playing MMOs - That includes betas. Seriously, Devs need to play this game and get a clue. This is the foundation that MMOs should be built on.
I won't say that Skyrim is perfect. I only have just dabbled with Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild, and I don't know how far I am in the main storyline, but I have gotten pretty far with the Empire, and killed 10 or so Dragons, and unlocked 7-9 shouts. My impressions after 20 hours of playing as a Heavy Armor, Two-Handed, Archer Nord;
I think this is(so far) the best offering by Bethesda ever.
a) Bethesda can not compare in voice acting, dialogue and characters to Dragon Age and The Witcher. Those series have problems too, but I think in the story area, I am more impressed by those.
Inherently some of the Oblivion problems with Radiant remains - Your listening to a NPC with a fixed camera and two other NPCs who walk into you overlap in their speaking. Many character share the same voice actor, and others have multiple voices for one character. The writing itself is not impressive but good enough to make you care that much about them.
Ulfric is not a great central character. His VO is decent, but he is a far cry from the excellence of Letho(Witcher 2) and those cool guys with horns in the first part of Dragon Age 2(the first arc with the Qunari.. the part that was interesting storywise)! At least so far, but it will be interesting to see the conclusion in Skyrim.
It's leaps and bounds above what Elder Scrolls have achieved in the past though, and overall it's by no means bad, nor is story as central as it is in DA and Witcher. Elder Scrolls have always been Exploration > Story, were the other two are perhaps more restricted but with more story dynamics.
b) The combat is really solid. It's fluid, and while not perfect I am very happy with what they achieved here. I do think that it would have been cooler if you had just gotten a new Shout every time you killed a Dragon. I find it weird that the ancient Dragon Tounge would be on tablets in all sorts of caves and ruins. Combat still has ways to go, but in Morrowind and Oblivion it was outright.. bad. Since Oblivion we've had games like MnB: Warband and Dark Messiah, and Bioshock. Games that took a different solid stance on first person melee fighting.
c) The setting. People will say that graphics don't make a difference, but I disagree. Like good audio, good visuals is immense. This game was created to be played at ultra, and half of the fun is just seeing all the locations with all the different weather patterns. Slow rain, fog in the mountains, the uber amazing northern lights, intense snow storms, clear stary nights, himmilayan-ish summer. For a "winter themed" RPG the diversity in Skyrim is immense.
As I am playing I only find myself wishing for one thing: An expansion that takes us back to Morrowind. I wouldn't mind paying 60 bucks for a full featured game with same features and concepts from Skyrim, just with a new story and setting back in Morrowind. To imagine the world of Morrowind with Skyrims graphic. Morrowind is one of the most iconic fantasy worlds I have ever seen. It's red Volcanic island world had it all. Oblivion's Cyrodill(spelling?) was boring in comparison.
d) Skyrim does crafting better than a lot of MMORPGs, just because of the well done visual ques. I really like how you can improve your sword by just getting one piece of Metal ignot.
Or how(like other Elder Scrolls games) how different merchants give different prices. A baker won't buy your orc weapons you collected on the war path, but I might buy the cheese.
e) I find there to be a lot of over reactions in terms of UI and controls. Controls are pretty good to me, and I am K/M. UI.. I guess a hot swap menu that was better than Q for my most used things would have been cool, but no biggie.
f) I think every game should do camera angles as well as SKyrim does. I change between first, over the shoulder and full third person view ALL the time. I LOVE THIS. I love how I am in control of my character by changing the perspective. Getting new armor gives me gratification because I can control my character well from fighting in third person, but I can also admire the close up action for variaty in first person.
Many games should give us this option to mix it up!
This is exactly my impression. In the last two days of playing I feel as though I am actually playing an adventure RPG, something most MMORPG's have lost. I do not want to hear that this type of game play, atmosphere and world cannot be duplicated in an MMORPG - that is just ludaris. All they have to do is do what these people did(very similar to the game Mount and Blade) and give us a world filled with adventure(some of our own making mind you) and let us explore, adventure and make the fun ourselves. Games like this are the diamonds amongst the costume jewelry that is flaunted by most game makers. Cherish this one - for it is a rare gem. :)
BTW I am making a wish list for this game. Things I wish to see added. It'll be like putting more nommy stuff onto your bananna split! They are not needed, but they sure do make the whole dish better. :)
Amen, Teala.
Playing this game brings back the sense of adventure I had back when I played the old, 1st and 2nd generation MMOs.
For people who came to the genre later and don't quite understand what is meant when I, or others certainly, talk of the sense of grand adventure in a massive world that MMOs used to provide... play Skyrim a bit, and you'll get what we mean, because it captures that feeling in spades.
This is the sense of adventure I had when I first played FFXI, Anarchy Online, Asheron's Call 2 and even Shadowbane to a degree. In every one of them, I felt like a very small individual dropped into a very massive world with tons of possibilities and very little hand-holding on which way I could go and/or what I could choose to do.
Skyrim is proof positive that at least one developer - Bethesda - still "gets it". They still understand what a grand sense of adventure is. They understand what it means to have a vast, immersive virtual world.. And they still know how to deliver it.
From what I've seen/read, they don't intend on making an Elder Scrolls MMO. While that's disappointing, frankly... perhaps it's for the best, if it's so. The MMO market - namely many of its players - have come to demand a specific style of gameplay that is much more linear, guided, casual and faster paced. They want things to be ever faster, easier and granting more reward for less effort. Were Bethesda to make concessions to cater to that player base, what makes the Elder Scrolls games what they are could be lost, defeating the purpose of making a MMO in the first place. Some things are better left alone, perhaps.
Magnificent game. I can't put it down, and I do have a lot of work to do, so it's bye bye sleep. :/
I was not fond of Oblivion, but this one is just brilliant. You can talk about the flaws, and it does have flaws, and I'm sure many are really, genuinely irritated with the console-friendly UI... I, too, was, for a bit, but the game is so immersive and well thought-out in other areas that it just made me get over it.
Trying to get to a quest area after assasinating a keep-full of people and finding myself in a wholly unexpected, tooth-and-nail duel with an awesomely frightening dragon in the middle of a gloomy pond, with the dragon's deafening roar booming and the giant flapping wings flashing in and out of sight, I found I'd wholly lost myself in this world, and all thought of an "interface" had just perished...
To me, what makes an unforgettable game is not the "lack of bad", it's the "presence of awesome". And I find this one has awesome in abundence. :)
My only wish is that this "game" had a crawling mode so i could be sure that i will not finish it until the next one comes out.
I must say i´ve been playing only for a couple of hours...
But so far i´m having a blast!
Not even following the main quest-line but getting easily lost in that amazing world full of life!
Game feels open...character evolution is incredible! More open than i´ve ever seen before in any game since you "learn" and get better at whatever u do most. No class locked.
Kudos Bethesa for bringing up (again) a Masterpiece of a game!
Yeah, I'm having the most fun I've had in a long time.
Has anyone found Volskygge yet?
This has been the best dungeon I've gone through so far. At first I just thought it was going to be a little jaunt. Then as it went on and there was a neat puzzle (and I'm sure glad I saved because I highly suspect that one couldn't mess it up and have a do over) then some traps and then I found what I thought was the boss. I kept dying until I tried some scroll called Firestorm.
firestorm is one of the best spells in this game. As my health is going I'm "windng it up" and then "blammo"! Luckily I had two of them as I was able to defeat this "boss". But oh no, it wasn't a boss as there was another one. Some smart thinking and a lucky "level up" gave me better two handed and I was able to get him.
So I thougth "ok this was epic". but then I run into "The Boss" who is using the voice and is dong something that I'd rather it didnt' do. I eventually destory it, think "wow this was the best dungeon I've run into" and then I went through the door to "The peak".
I have to say what happened there was extremely neat. And I died.
Also downloaded a texture change for the faces so the elves are less ugly as well as some of the other races so that was a perk.
Did you even read and tried to understand my post before quoting me? The fact a lot of people claim something doesn't make it more true. People used to claim the earth is flat, ye they even killed and burned books for that.
No really i don't say that to be a smart ass. Just try to grasp the greater limitations and need a rpg game with fps combat have to deal when it come to control and UI and you will understand. I explained it in the post. The Skyrim UI is a very good UI even for PC, i told you why, really it is. But you just don't understand it because you think a rpg with fps combat should have as simple control as a classical fps or as a classical rpg, but they can't. Its obvious if you think about it 5 minutes and if you actually try to test it. Just open a fps game, open whatever classical fps really it doesn't matter, then try to access all the key needed in a rpg, this mean the f1 to f12, the 1 to 0, and the skill bar and see what happen.
Yes you really need to adapt because rpg with fps combat don't use the same setting as your usual rpg or your usual fps, its not hard to understand. Its a technical and physical issue. Skyrim UI is not a bad port at all, it is very well set for pc, the people playing a lot of fps like rpg will understand it, yes rpg with fps combat have a bit more awkward control and UI but this is the price to have as way superior combat, which really isn't hard to understand. More complexity in combat need more work for you, the player. In skyrim you still have everything at your finger length, that's quiet a feat, try to play other rpg with fps combat to compare.
And really if you set it well the control are super easy, you both can access all the menus and the rebind option with tab and "q" keys, i mean can it be easier for a fps? i don't think so. The only thing a mod will do is help you totally mess your controls, that's for sure. But really if you want to wait, just do.
Geez I hear all these people making comments of I am level 10+. I am wondering how? My character is still level 7! She didn't buy a house, she just killed this group of bandits holding a keep, near a mountain lake, and has taken up residents there. :) Found a place to store all my stuffs - finally! By the way..I took the bandits bodies and dumped them into a river that flows from the lake. It took them down streem and over a water fall they went - all five of them! ::ebil grin::
Tell me...other than Mount and Blade and other Bethesda games allow you to do that?! So very cool! Loving this game!!!
I'm loving this game much more than previous Elder Scrolls games.
Don't have the time to go into details, but it seems that all my free-time just disappears when I play this game. Wake up at noon, and lo' and behold it's 03:00 at night on a sunday when I quit.
Just awesome and when the mods start rolling in it's going to get even better.
Just now hitting level 10 on my mage. Still doing a ton of these college quests, to the point it literally feels like the college is the main story, hehe. One sad thing of note, I killed my horse. Poor thing. Being a mage, my channeled spell which I Iove, tosses out flames like a flamethrower, unfortunately I cooked my horse as it was being attacked by some Frost Elemental. I don't mind too much except for the hit on my gold it took to pay for the horse. If the game had mounted combat it would be a different story, but so far, I haven't noticed the horse being worthwhile. Have to dismount to fight, he gets in the way, isn't really that fast and in my case, is now Barbecue at a dungeon entrance. I have yet to fight a dragon, too. Can't wait to cook HIM. For my HORSE!!! rawr, lol.
I played it for about six hours, really closer to seven, but I rolled two more toons during that time so about thirty minutes was spent snoozing through the overly long unskippable (and yes, pretty damn badass) intro. And damn yeah that should have been enough time to get used to the interface, but that awkward, clunky feeling never completely went away. The only two other games I've played that have been worse have been DCUO and FFXIV.
Now keep in mind I'm not talking about combat, combat is great. Its all the other scoll through menus and one key to loot anther to close out, that annoy me. I like to play a thief/scrounger in the game and the menu choices and extra clicks make the game more tedious than enjoyable at times.
I think this is a great and humorous example of how interacting with the interface makes me feel.
>CLICKY<
About the music, I love it. It's used a bit sparingly perhaps, taking care not to distract, and honestly, that's the way I like it. It's still quite evocative and the main theme of course is impressive - hearing that when you fight a dragon lends the whole scene a downright epic feel.
Jeremy Soule indeed is something akin to the John Williams of gaming. And that's not damning with faint praise, like "the best horror movie made in Pennsylvania" (something initially said for Night of the Living dead, lol).
By the way, the other day I saw an acoustic rendition of the main theme on youtube. Normally I don't much like such versions, but this'd indeed make some nice Bard music in a Skyrim tavern. :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtF5mvFHacY
So I came back to Whiterun and it was about 6AM (in-game). I'm standing there, and see the woman who runs Battlemaiden's (forget her name atm) come walking around the corner, walk up to her forge, pull the chain to heat it up... and then proceed to get to work.
A little while later, I happened to be in Whiterun around the same time, see her walk up to the shop again, and this time walk up to the tanning station.
I basically witnessed a video game character come from their home and start their day of work. That's awesome.
Then I go to the Bannered Mare, and am just listening to some of the songs the guy's performing. Hilarious.
Had this one guard right outside Dragonsreach poking fun at me about my iron sword almost every time I'd walk past him. I finally upgraded to a steel sword and armor (courtesy of a bandit leader near Whiterun who seemed to have a sudden onset of fatal health issues. I think it was iron poisoning). The next time I walk past that same guard, he's all "Ahh that's some fine armor. Good old steel" (or something like that).
And so on.. It's amazing seeing some of the random things that take place around town, how the NPCs react to you.
The only thing that hasn't seemed to change is that me becoming a Thane hasn't gotten me any more respect. I still have some guards making idle threats (don't cause trouble, etc).
All in all... even outside the epic moments, etc... It's just awesome experiencing this game.
Can't wait this awesome game!
Steal something and get caught.
I stole a elven sword out of a glass case in the castle, was caught and told them i was a thane and they let me off.
LOL, I got that sword recently, but didn't get caught...muhahaha
WTF man, I was just trying to eat dinner and the guards try to kill me. I don't even get a chance to say I'm a thane.
And how come I never see that woman working! She's always leaning on a frigging post telling me to make crap for her. I killed a dragon for crying out loud, and she wants me to make her daggers for her! I swear to god I'm going to kill her tomorrow!
Yes, I understood it. I've also been reading the Skyrim and Steam forums to get as much information as possible (I hope you weren't expecting that I was going to take your word as gospel). What that has lead me to conclude is that Beth made the game for consoles, then did the minimum required to get it to run on the PC so they could increase their sales. Same old story, different title. The only really bright spot that I've read is that it seems to be damned stable. I think that's a first for Beth. But to tell you the truth, I would have preferred a buggy game that was designed for PC than the opposite. Developers tend to fix bugs. They don't tend to re-write interfaces
Sorry, but I'm in no hurry to rush out and throw my money at a company who doesn't feel that going the extra distance to give me the best possible experience is part of their job. And that's not just Beth but most companies who produce multiplatform games. That's why I hesitated in buying it in the first place. I've been burned more times than I can count due to lazy ports so I was expecting the worst. The good news is that everything that console development couldn't f*** up, actually sounds pretty good. However, everything it could f*** up, it did.
I'm not writing the game off, but I am going to delay. I never had the level of hype that most of you have, so for me, waiting is no hardship. Oblivion was a step backwards from Morrowind (in my opinion), so I wasn't waiting feverishly for this one. In the meantime, I'll just hold on until one of the strengths of the PC platform takes over and mods out the poorly optimized bits that Beth should have done themselves.
Oh, and on the topic of FPS/RPGs, games have been able to mix them successfully for years. System Shock II comes to mind as one of the earlier ones, and that was back in the 90s. Mixing these two types of games is hardly breaking new ground. But then again, the influence of consoles on PC development has never been more invasive than it is today. It's not the intricacies of designing a working system for different genres that's tricky, but doing it for different platforms. Sadly, it's usually the PC that gets the short end of stick. Sorry, I just won't raise a glass of purple kool-aid to that. You're welcome to, though.
enjoy NOT playing a very fun, immersive game.
the UI only has one problm for me, and that is inability to remap the F and R key without breaking the functions that those keys use in the interface menus.
solution? i got used to my run and activate being elsewhere.
i have never bought a new game, EVER, and thought "Oh, this UI is amazing. it does nothing to annoy me".
UI is an annoying part of games. for me anyway. most of them (for me) take time to get used to, even if made well. Skyrim has a few UI issues, and i agree that they should have been addressed before selling. but this game is AMAZING, and a couple UI irritations are not enough to ruin it for me.
this is the only game i need for YEARS to come. i forgot what MMO even stands for.
oh yeah, i remember. Monthly Monetary Offering.
My mount, the second one I have bought since my first was eaten by something, is named Tibirius. Wonderful thing about this guy...when I am in danger he does not hesitate to attack my enemies. He is so awesome that he stomped to death the leader of group of bandits I was sent to kill. While I was fighting three of the bandits Tibirius rushed the leader and kicked the living crap out of him, when I was running up to him I heard him say "Mercy...for the love of the Gods mercy!" LOL! I was thinking dude...my horse is like the most badarse dude this side of hades. :)
Hehehe...here, btw, as I mentioned, my horse kicking arse on that leader of the bandits I came across. Screen shot I took to prove it! LOL!
This guy had a sword of frost on him, too, and I found 116 gold as well. All in all a good haul!
You dont need to pay for the mount.
If you join a faction through a MISC quest you can then travel to all thier strongholds in Skyrim and just take a horse from the stables for free.
I took a white-ish gray horse and it continues to spawn along side me.
People need to shut up and be happy that we even get games on PC.
With all the pirating thats going on I feel fortunate that we get console ports at this point.
why do you think they don't pirating consoles? today everything is possible
Had a similar encounter: suddenly attacked by four bandits and my horse went crazy when I dismounted. It tanked and spanked remarkably well so I switched from using my bow to being my horse's main healer in that encounter. Worked like a charm and good to see ranged heals work on mounts too :)
Also cool how arrows stick for a while.
Honestly not to the extent that of PC games. Its much easier to pirate PC games since its free to do so.
To pirate Console stuff you need to modify your console then go through the process of DLing and burning games to disc.
Look at games like Crysis, Torchlight and Witcher. millions of illegal downloads. If you were a developer would you bother making a game for PC that will see 200-400k sales and 5 million copies stolen?
Like I said we should feel fortunate that we have games on PC at all.
Bioshock use a pure fps control and Ui setting, you just need to bind weapons in Bioshock, they are pretty much no skills, potions, spells, scrolls involved as an rpg like Skyrim need to have. Its clear you don't understand what i'm saying, and don't even try to understand.
Walking around in an area that's teeming with those darned bears and perilously close to a dragon's soaring grounds, I guess the last thing you expect to see is a trio of hunters in their underwear / bikinis, lying or standing in the steaming waters of a lake, taking some time off and just, well, chilling.
But that is exactly what I've seen. :)
Some games should remain single player. Once you make an MMO out of it, everyone then becomes "The Hero" and the moments and powers you get that make you special... are all to commonplace.
No, the only people who are really lucky are the software companies who can take the easy way out by developing the game for the console, making a half assed port for PC, yet still sell it to PC gamers at full retail price, and have seemingly uneducated people like yourself slavishly buy the game and be grateful about it even when they treat you more like a burden and less like a paying customer.
Personally I detest the pirating of intellectual property. The less people that can make a good living off creating things for us, the less stuff there eventually is for us to have. In the world of gaming it makes companies add draconian and at the same time worthless DRM meassures to games that are only a headache for we people who actually pay for the bloody things. Take a quick gander around any torrent site and you will quickly see there are just as many if not more console games (since so many games are console only these days) being shared as there ones for the PC.
While at the moment people still have to physically mod their consoles (or pay someone a small fee to do it for them, a burgeoning underground industry) they only have to do it once. Then on all they do is download and burn. And your idea that having to pay a small sum per game for writable media is some how enough of a prohibitive expense that people would rather just pay full retail price, is f**king hilarious. For the price of about two console games (actually probably less these days) they can play any game that strikes their fancy without ever needing to spend one penny more.
And to make matters worse, now that dongle cracking, homebrew console OS's and jailbreaking are becoming more hobbiest cracker level rather than bleeding edge technology, very soon physically mod chipping a console will be obsolete. And that means any bright little monkey with an internet connection will be able to pirate console games at their leisure. And due to their less felxable nature, console companies will be slower to find ways to combat this free gaming ramapage. And since the two biggest console companies are still selling their console units at a loss, or just a level above breaking even, these companies rely heavily on game revinue to turn a profit. This is not a good thing for the profitable future of consoles or gaming.
And I'll add one more thing, gaming companies seem to still be blind to the idea that they garner the most loyal consumers by selling a well made product at a reasonable price. We keep hearing game makers yammer on and on about how much easier it is to create games for the consoles as opposed to the PC. Funny though how that ease of access never seems to be reflected in the price their products. And in fact the price of these so called easier to make games keeps rising. What this means to me is that these companies are using this consolization method to maximize profits. They create a lower quality product, sell it for more each year, and those of us who haven't given up on games all together, or even worse decided to just stop paying for them, get the shaft. And in cases of consumers like yourself, actually get showered with praise for treating gamers on both platforms in this backhanded manner.
What the original post missed in his spoiler is that there is actually a choice in the opening sequence to go with the imperial guard (as he did) or follow a rebel into the building. Gives a slightly different flavour to the underground escape and a different starting quest.
Enjoying the game immensly and hate that I have to go to work and stop playing. Then again I can read forum posts about Skyrim.
Tardcore I tend to overlook the flaws of a game if it's very good, c'mon man, we are talking about the best RPG ever created, it's certainly not without its flaws but I'd skip every game if I were stuck to the parts I don't like and for once I think a singleplayer game deserves my full money and it's gonna keep me occupied for a long time.
And in the case of this particular game I don't find that outlook unreasonable. As I stated earlier in the thread even I am willing to over look this issue if/when a fan made better UI mod is made.
However, look at it from my perspective for a minute. If this company has the talent to create such a great game, why didn't they take care of what I admit are really just niggling little details? Seeing issues that seem so easy to have avoided at all in such a great game, for me, only exacerbates my annoyances with them. If this game was made by a small indie company such as Taleworlds who do not have a massive budget or tech team, or made by a large company with a history of making totally sh*t, or at least lesser quality games (take your pick, there are tons of them), I actually wouldn't be as pissed off.
Seeing a company who have proven in both the past, and with this game, that they can do better, but for some reason mysteriously decided not to, combined with very negetive comments made by memebers of the company about the PC side of their creation process, makes me feel like they don't value those of us on the PC side of things as important customers. And frankly that hurts considering that I have been a fan, supporter and player of their games since the days of Daggerfall. If this company is going to try to continue to make a profit off my ass, and every other fan who is a PC gamer, then they should be willing to go the entire distance, and not just "good enough" to get the job done.
i bought Skyrim during the Midnight release,
sadly i havent have time to play it as i haven't finished my Deus Ex and Uncharted 3
bought too many games recently, and even i just got the AC Revelations 2 hours ago,
so Skyrim being the games that will last the most, i will probably keep it for the last
damnn these release dates!!!
first Why i love Enlder scroll (played since Obl) coz when you go do some main quest you Never know what you will face
in the way there is always surprize on every ench in the game
for Skyrim i spend all 1st day thinking which race i should pick it was tough day
, dont get me worng i enjoyed that annoying day lol
anyway when i pick the race and start playing the game first its Amazing 3D and carfully details
with good start story to put you into action from the first min
Obviously they make strange decisions in 020, they seem to have as much understanding of games as they have of soccer...
Now go and start playing Skyrim....
Just take some good advice from people that can now....
What exactly are you saying here in reference to Skyrim? What makes it a "halfassed port" that should cost less for the PC version? The UI? Which IMO has been blown way out of proportion regarding how "bad" it is. This is one of the deepest games to release in years, yet somehow we're still being screwed?
Do you realize how much work it takes to create a game like this, and why things like UI's are an after thought? Do you understand how hard it is to make a game like this that runs well, while meeting deadlines and making sure things don't break due the dynamic nature of the world? Do you really think a PC specific UI is more important than all of that?
We're a burden as PC customers yet they happily put in the extra work to create modding tools, free of charge that allow the manipulation of the entire engine? They offer anyone who wants it the ability to create their own game, yet they aren't catering to the PC crowd?
The manual is in the game. Hit escape and look for "Help" in the menus.
I have to agree with Dist0rpiah, TC.
While the UI has some peculiarities, once you get the hang of it it is pretty decent. Actually I love the skill-galaxy thingy and the journal works like a charm as well. The only issues that stand out for me:
- Navigating between conversation topics with the mouse frequently activates the wrong topics; visual feedback is inaccurate. With keyboard only this works fine.
- Contents of containers can't be filtered.
- Map feels a bit sluggish. I want to be able to drag it with the mouse, rather than move it by mousing over to the edges / using wasd.
- I want to be able to directly keybind items / skills, not having to go through the favorites menu. (Which is a fine addition though, because of it allowing quick access to more than the 8 items binded by your number keys).
All these things can, and probably will be patched / modded eventually but they are pretty minor once you got the keyboard layout hard wired.
I haven't screwed around with remapping keys though.
The whole game feels more responsive, stable and optimized for PC compared with Oblivion. I only had a single ctd so far, after maybe 35 hours or so. It just runs like a charm. In that sense they already made a huge leap forward for PC users. Encountered very few bugs as well.
And considering what a game it is, the sheer amount of work put in and setting yourself a strict deadline, a year before launch ... I can only praise Bethesda, my friend. Too bad they didn't get to perfect that UI but it's a temporary and minor annoyance at best.
Thank you Bethesda for bring back dungeon crawling!!!!!
Saw 2 different Aurora Borealis scenes in the last few days. First time, they were typical green. I went further south to Riften and saw blue/purple ones. Just beautiful. Now to figure out how to post screenies here from my Steam screenshots.
I am playing on the XBOX, I saw them too! Just amazing :)
LOTRO by the way has them too, in Forochel! Turbine did them a bit better as in LOTRO it's actually animated, while in Skyrim so far it seems to be a still.
Thanks for cherry picking my comments and completely ignoring the rest of my argument. The half assed port comment was about the console gaming industry as a whole, not just one company. It also was in rebuttle to that posters stance that consoles were the better choice due to security and game quality, and that we paying PC customers should be happy with what we get. Which, as I think I clearly pointed out, is a rubbish argument. And I also think I was very clear on my reasons for thinking so. But you seem to have chosen to ignore all that. And please quit focusing on just my comments about the UI. While the wonky UI is the biggest fun detractor for me, my continuing discussion about this title goes far deeper than just one issue.
Also, please point out anywhere in these forums where I've stated that Skyrim was anything but an excellent game.
As to the rest of your argument, I really don't know where to start. This company makes games, this company sells games, they sell them on two seperate platforms (three if you want to be pedantic). They sell them for full retail price and make a f**King mint off both groups of customers. Yet becuase building a PC game takes them more effort, we paying PC customers are treated like red-headed step children. Well sorry but a company that wants my money is going to have to prove to me they deserve and want my business before I give it to them. Expecting me to be happy that a company wants me to pay the same price for a game that was tailored with another group of customers in mind, and even going so far as to publicly complain that making games for we PC peasents is "Oh so hard on we poor, very rich, soon to be richer, souls" is patently ridiculous.
As a matter of fact I actually do know the kind of effort that goes into making these kinds of games, other kinds of software as well. What does that have to do with the price of fish? This (and all the other dual platform companies) make games for a living. That's what they do. More importantly they then sell these games for a living. If one demogrpahic (in this case PC gammers) of their consumers allows them to turn a profit (which they still do, and which is quite a large one) then they most certainly aren't a burden. If they don't consider that group worth treating like cherished, or at least wanted customers then they really should stop asking them for their money and support. If they ask an equitable price, then I demand equitable treatment. I'm a bit baffled why some of you feel this is such a crime.
As for the construction kit being offered, yeah that is great. Its also a great thing for Bethesda as it allows a work force they don't actually pay to extend the life of their game (and therefor the sales of said game) far beyond its normal life span. Try doing that on a console. Also I think the misconception that it would take too much effort to create a PC friendly interface will get shot down by the speed with which a hobbiest modder creates their own once the contruction kit is out.
People like yourself, my previously quoted poster and Pony (always remember rule one Pony), may be willing to settle for being treated like an unwelcome and uninvited guest by these companies, but I'm not.
Also last time I checked, sales numbers for Skyrim were running at over 3.4 million units. 59% on the Xbox, 27% on the PS3 and only 14% on PC. However these sales numbers are hard copy units only, they don't include digital sales at all, which is the prefered purchase method of many PC gamers these days. Once more numbers are in I think we will see that the PC will easily beat the PS3 numbers and be not too far behind the Xbox in sales. Plus from the past performance of both Morrowind and Oblivion, I'm willing to bet that full retail price sales of Skyrim for the PC will continue at a much higher volume, for far longer than on either console. Sadly though we will have to wait and see. And even more sadly if my predictions turn out to be correct, I'm still wiling to be these companies will still whinge on about what resource draining dicks we PC gamers are.
I HATE Skyrim at the moment.
Yes, I am one of the few that is still experiencing bugs with my char getting stuck at the end of the 2nd(?) cutscene.
*Bad word* that CAVE! -_-;;;
Yes it is on PC.
Oh well, I guess I'll shelve it for a good 6 months. Got other stuff to play anyway, like NFS:The Run.
Ouch, that sucks mate.
From the time I played the game and from the time I spent watching my friend play, I have to say that Skyrim is amazingly short on bugs. With the exception of getting stuck under the fireplace mantal in the keep you first escape from and later sliding down a mountain and getting stuck between two boulders, I've seen zero errors. Sorry to hear your experiance wasn't the same.
That sucks. At least you have NFS though, I put it on my Christmas list, wife is gonna grab it for me. Demo I played was very fun and I love a good NFS game. Skyrim has me hooked for now though.
Once I find it again I'll post it, there's a ini tweak for the mouse lag, which turns off mouse smoothing, it helps a lot in the dialogue department. As well as with navigating the UI.
I agree Skyrim runs far better than Oblivion ever did on my PC which is aged at this point, and at a higher resolution with more bells & whistles. None of that awful hitching Oblivion always had. I was highly surprised by the smoothness of game-play on my end, glad I went with the modable PC version as I was thinking about getting the PS3 version due to my aged PC.
Fix mouse lag by disabling vsync in Skyrim.ini
- Add iPresentInterval=0 under the [Display] section
So many different dungeons not like Oblivion that looked all the same and yes its awesome crawling down dungeons ive done couple of dozen dungeons now and all are totally different looking enviroments i love it.
The game isin't bad, but it has alot of glaring issues, the controls quite frankly are horrible, and having to unequip my offhand item to cast a spell is extremly aggravating, It'd not be so bad if I could block with my sword while having a spell redied but for some reason you can't. Bethesda also has cut alot of corners with the game, especally in the alchemy sections, Remember how morrowind and oblivion had some neat looking alch plants pretty much anywhere you go? well in Skyrim they are fairly non-existant, I've been over a med sized part of the map and all i ever see is the exact same plants and never anything new. Other than the controls and the flora its a damn fine game, land is a little bit boring though its sort of bland on the world map. But the dungeons and such are nice.
Thanks for the tip, Disp. Will try tonight.
Another point: I read in some tweakers guide that anti-isotropic filtering is very low on resources so many people that are playing at the game's suggested settings can crank it up to 16 without issues. Will try that too.
First off, having to equip a spell in your hand and therefore unequip your weapon or shield is a feature., not an issue. Frankly Oblivion was just plain dumb with how you could cast a fireball from the same hand you were holding a sword in. The way they have done it in Skyrim has many benefits, such as being able to equip 2 spells, combine spells for greater effects and, probably the big one, it makes a full blown mage viable at last! Pissed me off in Oblivion how my "mage" still had to run around with a weapon and shield. Now in Skyrim you can have flames in one hand and a ward in the other and attack/block just using magic. You should just hotkey your spells and shield next to each other and swap mid fight - I do that on my spellsword-type character and it works fine.
Secondly, I suggest you travel around the landscape a bit more. I have had no trouble collecting a vast variety of plants, but they do grow in different environments. I'm not sure how you can say it is bland either - one minute you're on the glacial lake near Winterhold, next the open plains of Whiterun, the geysers near Riften and the foggy marshes of Morthal. Oblivion didn't have such variety.
I was asking for a clarification of how Skyrim fits into your "don't be screwed by the man" rant that I snipped out.
It's no big secret that gaming has been shifting away from the PC market for a while now. Many staples of the medium have all but vanished over the last decade. Those that are left have been dumbed down in large part in a feeble attempt to grow the market, which in some regards it has, but with every casual they bring in, they turn 5 purists away, if forum trends are to be believed.
The biggest factor here is the fact that PC exclusive companies are few and far between, that number seemingly shrinks daily to, as more and more companies dissolve and their employees move to where the jobs are, which is sadly the console or social areas of the market.
The Elder Scrolls series hasn't been developed with PC in mind since before Morrowind, yet Beth has still went out of their way to cater to the wants of the PC market, by allowing them to shape the game in anyway they want. There are very few companies you can say that about. Most ignore the PC market and really don't give a hoot how their ports are received, as most of the time the port comes months later with little in the way of continued support. Rockstar is a good AAA example to use here.
Anyway I really don't know what this topic has to do with Skyrim impressions which is why i avoided the rest of your post to begin with.
I'll say it upfront as I really don't care if it makes me a fanboi, I'll defend Beth to an extreme, they're one of the few companies out there that go out of their way to make deep meaningful games, that can entertain for months to years without some Mp tack on to promote regurgitated longevity.
Actually I'd have to write that you're being a bit naive if you think Skyrim is the "perfect" sandbox RPG. It has a lot of scripted stufff, both main quest and side stuff. They haven't gone the next step to try and make the game AI generate sandbox. Yes, there are RNG quests, but it does feel feel like RNG quests. It will play like a console game no matter what you play the game on, and the graphics playing with PS3 are very good on large LCD TV.
THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This game allows me to immerse myself completely in a different world. I love the dungeons and spend all my time searching out every nook and cranny. They are beautifully crafted and I stand there in complete amazement sometimes. I love the traps. It is the first time I feel that DnD has been brought to life in a video game...well almost....
really?
you want quest hubs designed like mmos?
for shame.....
I have the PS3 version and since patch it has locked up more frequnetly and now I am stuck on the civil war questline because the Falkreath Stormcloak camp vanished.
They are tons of alchemy materials, plants are just a part of it, also you have different type of plants depending on the region you are in.
