Star Wars: The Old Republic : Sith Warrior Specializations, Companions Revealed

Posted May 28, 2010 by Michael Bitton

This week's Friday Update includes new screenshots and video of the Sith Warrior class, as well as details on his advanced classes the dual-wielding Marauder and the tough-as-nails Juggernaut.

Companions were also revealed in greater detail today, following up on yesterday's preview over at IGN, and we're also given a look at one of the first class-specific companions: Vette, an option for the Sith Warrior class.

Click the above image or go here to watch the Sith Warrior trailer. Also, be sure to watch for the very end of the video which appears to include confirmation of ridable vehicles such as speederbikes.

Visit the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website for additional details on the game.

Bit dissapointed that you need to go down a certian path just to have dual lightsabers.

this is an awesome thing for the game but i have 1 problem. if u notice in wow there is the same thing sorta well the skill tree idea and so on , now people crunch numbers and waste there life trying to figure out certain combos that work well for raids and pvp and so on. now if your not a certain spec then no raid for you if your not a certain pvp spec then Roflcopter to you.

for me this concept puts a damper on my game play because it inhibits the players own playstyle.

so i hope to all the Holy mmo gods that this dosnt happen and people just leave crap alone lol.

but my wishes shall fall on deaf ears lol.

Every game will have min/max players. Every game will have those people that create that really awesome build and the sheep start following it because it works. But every game always has those that break all the rules and find a way to play the game how they like, the ones that do it well are the great players imo. Start doing it, ignore the others, make it work.

Agree wow did not invent the mmo, I think some people think that, there are industry standards that all mmo's use since Merdian59, UO an EQ, wow took many of thier ideas from these games, I just get tired of seeing folks say this is like wow, when wow, copied so many other games like all ofher mmo's do... :) only thing wow did was make an easy play mmo, with low end graphics, /shrug

Still a tad curious if the companions are going to be side specific. I could understand droids being companions to either side, but like in the KoToR games you had ones that were definatively light aligned or dark aligned. Would be a tad odd having a convicted felon with murdering tendencies accompying a Jedi.

Not that the games were strict in that sense, just would bring some diversity to either side. Though I do find it oddly amusing that the first companion they detail is a female Twilek.

I'd be very surprised if players could not at least rename their pets.

Well like in SWG every mch had huge rancors (early early on in the game) or twin kittys, most every dps hunter in wow has a wolf etc etc etc.  There are optimal builds for whatever game and specialization so that will bring players to whatever best suits their playstyle and maximizes their effectiveness.  How is it any different from everyone running around with the same weapon or suits of armor?

One thing, though, is how it sounds like it will play out: some will have Vette's that are free spirits, others will have crushed slaves.  Will have to see how it all works once we get our hands on the game :)

Since the dialogue is fully voiced and I'm guessing that your character and other NPCs will at least at some point mention the companion's name, I think that you won't be able to rename them. Visually customize though, mostly probably.

Well this is what i call inovation , now we dont even need to have to make friends to enjoy and add to the diversity of the adventure we are given them..

Just when im trying to pump my way through all the damn script so i can actually play the game my pocket friend keeps adding to the discussion.

I can see why this may look at face value like a cool added ect but as more comes out more concerns i have.

Than it sounds like this game will not be for you. Bio-Ware is Bringing back the RPG in mmoRPG from what i have read and heard. IE focusing on story telling, making the actual story good enought to where you will want to read/listen to it,giving you choice and not just "Accept quest"/"Decline quest" . Almost all other mmos out there are just Grab X amount of quests/Burn threw them/move on to next area, now dont get me wrong i do this too, some times. I do remember people talking about how they love starting alts cause of how fun the lower lvls were of Game X, so on and so forth. Only time will tell how TOR turns out. as most of us have learned you will never tell how good of a Game X is till its about with in 3months of launch to about 3-6months afterward. there are plenty of MMOs out there Most with no focus on story so this is a great alterantive to those who love the single Player RPG style storytelling with a multi player online Massive experinince.

Well that's off topic, but.. Warcraft was going to be a Warhammer title produced by Blizzard way back when. But there were differences so Warcraft was going to be a bit of a spoof genre game since at that time the Discworld and Zanth novels were doing really well.

But on topic. The company is BIOWARE! They don't innovate genres, they just own them. If you were expecting anything different then you're aloof.

I agree with you 100%. I am so sick of grind mmos and quest mmos that get you knowwhere. Its tiresome a waste of time and more work and money than it is worth in my opinion. This does not mean i dont play them or give them a try here and there. There are very few mmos that have any good story telling if any at all. We finally a breakthrough somewhat in the mmo world. <3's bioware

damn straight they do. I love the storytelling in Kotor1, kotor 2, mass effect 1, mass effect 2, and dragonage. enjoyed all of them. Mass effect series made me feel like i was part of the game as inovative as it was. I felt like was an actor in a movie. I loved it

As a heads up from what I have seen in some of the live footage from PAX and hands on demo's you dont. ANY jedi/sith can weild dual sabers, there is a focused set of talents for the sith maurauder (path) that adds new dual saber only abilities. I despise to use this as an example, but think of warrior talent trees in wow. A fury warrior could use a 2 hand weapon, and gain tons of benifits, but the talents in the fury tree catered much more exclusively to it, thereby making each style of player open to options of playstyle. Now don't quote me on this, but I imagine the jedi will have something similar. Keep in mind none of this is fact, just inference from my own expierence.   Choice is the backbone of BioWare. Never say never when it comes to a game this far from launch.

On the other hand, if you are correct, I would be somewhat dissapointed and confused as well.  But I trust in BioWare to put the quality and continuity of the game first, my personal opinion second. At this point, only they know what they are making. As much as I would love to have the game I "dream" about, I understand that I WILL have to make some concessions and not every aspect of this game will appeal to me.  But so far, IMO, it's looking fantastic.

Can't wait to see the Inquisitor and Jedi Knight paths.  Cheers all.

hmmm... Maybe the companions are only availible in instances or simular situations. I so hope that the game is not like guildwars where if ur not in a party its seems as if ur offline. guildwars is a fun game though i just did not like that part at all.

I think it will be interesting to see if the 'voice acting was a small part of the budget' posters change their story if the game releases with thin content (besides the awesome solo story lines) and under-developed systems (like crafting).

This is nothing new, guild wars allows you to have a full AI controlled party to play with.

I am curious about this as well; however, it is canon for melee (lightsabers) to be overpowered.  This is an MMO canon need not apply to gameplay sometimes.

I could care less if the graphics are "impressive" if they are not 10years behind or more.  MMOs are ment to be played for a long time correct?  Eventually the graphics will "rust".

The overall gameplay and community is what im looking for, and I have yet to see enough of either to make judgement.   Community being reserved to the forums.

So a pet with the same name makes this game a single player game?

I'm literally astounded with you.

If 99% of people have a mother, does that make your mother any less special?  It's special in and of itself.  Special does not mean "only."

I think the companion will be Sith Warrior only, since each class has their own story.

And to not confuse our poor little players with a massive amount of sith with the same companion following them in the social areas, they might as well leave the companions on the ship/in the base etc.

True, but it does mean "not commonplace"
