EVE Online : Our Exclusive Preview of "Exodus"

Posted Nov 17, 2004 by Craig McGregor

Our own Reed Hubbard recently got the chance to take a tour of the upcoming free expansion for EVE Online - "Exodus".  This new expansion will add many new and exciting aspects to the game.  Here is an excerpt from the article:

Although classified as a MMORPG, EVE Online has often danced in the fringes of the genre. Developer Crowd Control Productions has chosen to embrace a rich economic framework and loosely restricted PvP over more conventional MMORPG trappings. This approach has garnered the persistent universe many fans, but has left others cold as the depths of space. However, this may all change soon. The epic universe of EVE Online is about to experience a major upheaval with its next expansion. Formerly known by the codename Shiva, the upcoming addition to EVE Online is entitled Exodus, and it represents a huge leap forward in both content and direction.

One of the new features in the Exodus expansion is the introduction of complexes. Alternately known as "dungeons," complexes are progressive Player vs. Environment settings where groups of players must defeat numerous NPC opponents to gain access to more difficult stages. For example, a gang of players may defeat a number of pirates to obtain the key to a dormant jumpgate. Upon activation, the gang jumps to a zone not accessible through conventional means of travel where the players must overcome more challenging opposition. Successful completion of all stages may yield the conquerors rare items, huge monetary rewards, and other desirable loot.

EVE Online : Exodus Expansion Coming Nov 17

Posted Nov 03, 2004 by Craig McGregor

CCP announced today that they will be releasing the "Exodus" expansion for Eve Online on November 17, 2004.  This expansion will be available free to all registered players of EVE and will add tons of new features and content to the game.  Their official release is below:

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND -- November 3rd, 2004 - CCP, the developer and publisher of the award winning massively multiplayer online game EVE Online, today announced that its highly anticipated EVE Online: EXODUS expansion will be released worldwide on November the 17th, 2004.

Available as a free downloadable upgrade, the expansion will have a major impact on the EVE universe as a whole. It will incorporate scores of new game play features, im provements to current functionality, performance enhancements and user interface changes.

EVE Online is now one of the fastest growing massively multiplayer online games. In the last 12 months subscriber numbers have more than doubled to 54,000. This growth has made the EVE server cluster the largest persistent world with more players on a single shard than any other MMO game in the U.S. and Europe.

"The EXODUS expansion finally gives our players the opportunity to truly begin the territorial conquest they have been building up for " said Reynir Harðarsson, CCP's Art Director and founder of CCP. "All players can now affect the political landscape of the EVE world by conquering everything from solar systems to whole regions of space... This feature originated from the player community, and demonstrates well that EVE is a living world that evolves through player interaction."

EVE Online: EXODUS is predicted to have a revolutionary impact on the persistent world game genre. Exodus contains new tools that allow powerful players to manage very large political structures like alliances, which can contain thousands of players each. The sizes of player alliances in EVE are considerably greater than in any other MMO game. By formalizing the gathering of player corporations into player alliances, along with tools sets to allow these massive entities to control territory, the current underlying power structures will be more visible to players.

The award winning EVE 3D graphics engine has been enhanced to offer outstanding performance in demanding situations such as when hundreds of players engage in massive fleet battles. New special effects, ships and NPCs, along with many interface changes further enhance the player's immersion and experience of actual space flight. To demonstrate the new expansion, CCP has released a new EVE Online: EXODUS trailer available on www.eve-online.com.

"EXODUS is a great step on our journey towards a very big idea which is EVE," says Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CEO/CTO of CCP. "As presented at our Fan Fest last month, CCP has much in store for future expansions to the EVE universe which is now ready to grow to an unprecedented size."

Exodus improves the starting experience for new players. For the first time new players will get a detailed manual to guide them along their way. Casual players will also enjoy the new Deadspace Complexes, which are massive game arenas, where they can gather and join forces with other players to attempt to complete large scale battles with NPC's.

"We are very happy with the growth EVE has had during the last 12 months, and at the same time very grateful to our players for their active participation and interest in all aspects of the game." Says Magnus Bergsson CMO at CCP. "We are looking forward to see how the players will use the new tools in EXODUS and I am certain they will do something we never expected!"

Below is a short list of some of the more prominent new features in Exodus:

Player Owned Structures (Starbases)   Corporation Improvements
  New Ships   New Alliance systems
New Multi-Level Scenarios   New War Declaration
New System Scanning   User Interface Improvement
  New Environments   New Agent Functionality
  Mining Improvements   New Aggression System
Formal contract system   New NPC Types
Market Improvements   Fleet command and tactical view
Updated Ingame Browser   New Helper Applications

EVE Online : Quafe Available Soon!

Posted Oct 21, 2004 by Craig McGregor

It appears that CCP will soon team up with a beverage manufacturer to re-create their in game soft drink "Quafe" here on Earth!  Here is the press release:

CCP announces The Availability of QUAFE

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND - CCP announced today that it has started production on Quafe, the most popular soft drink in the world of EVE Online. The drink will be officially launched at the EVE Fanfest, which starts on October 22nd.

Quafe first appeared two centuries ago and, like so many soft drinks, was initially intended as a medicine for indigestion and tender stomachs. But the refreshing effects of the drink appealed to everyone and the drink quickly became hugely popular. This success of the Quafe Company, which has mostly come about in the last three decades or so, can be largely credited to one man: Poire Viladillet, the CEO of the Quafe Company for the past 35 years. Under his leadership the Quafe Company has propelled from being one of several leading soft drink manufacturers into a clear and undisputed supremacy.

About two months ago, a CCP employee was able to get his hands on the secret formula and after continuous research and testing, CCP has figured out a way to manufacture Quafe and production has already started in cooperation with Icelands largest soda drink manufacturer.

CCP has started a contest where current players of EVE can vote for a Quafe Queen which will be the official spokeswoman for the soft drink throughout the galaxy. Registered users can go to http://myeve.eve-online.com/quafequeen to cast their vote.

EVE Online : Our Exclusive Review

Posted Sep 29, 2004 by Craig McGregor

Our own Reed Hubbard (Koltrane) has spent many consecutive weeks living inside the virtual world of "EVE Online" - the award winning sci-fi/space MMORPG by CCP Games.  Well, he is back now and ready to share his opinions of the game with our community!  Here is a snippet from his review:

EVE is a space game with a thriving economy, but it could be easily argued that EVE is an intricate economic simulation with a fancy, outer space interface. The economy of EVE is both the most complex and most rewarding feature of EVE. Ore, minerals, goods, items, ships, skills...everything in EVE is for sale and the mantra of, "buy low, sell high" applies. The economy is driven by players in pursuit of Interstellar Kredits, or ISK. (Note: ISK is also the international currency symbol for the Krona, the primary currency of Iceland. CCP, the developer of EVE is based in Reykjavik, Iceland.) NPC corporations manufacture ships, but they need minerals to do so, and those minerals are supplied by players. If no one is mining ore, then no minerals are refined which means no items are being manufactured which means no ships are being assembled. Money can be made providing myriad services in this economy. Mining ore brings a price, as does transporting minerals, etc.

EVE Online : New Concurrent Player Record!

Posted Sep 06, 2004 by Craig McGregor

CCP Games posted yesterday that they have set a new record for concurrent players online in a single sharded world...10,744!  Here is their official word on this:

You did it again!
A new simultaneous player record was set tonight, Sunday, when 10.744 players were on at the same time. This beats the old record by more than 500 players! The EVE game servers ran without any problems during this heavy load, so the recent hardware upgrades and performance tuning is paying off. This also confirms that the game servers are ready for the next release and the expected influx of new players.

UPDATE: It appears that they smashed their record again today.  This time reaching 11,246 players online in a single world.  The snippet from their site on this:

And again!
Another player record was set tonight, Monday, when 11.246 players were on at the same time. This is the first time a record is set on a Monday. Again, the servers weren´t affected, leaving us with plenty room for more players. Come and join us, you wont regret it!

Excellent work guys!

EVE Online : Shiva Page Update

Posted Jun 06, 2004 by Reed Hubbard

Scheduled for a fall release, Crowd Control is working on the upcoming EVE Online add-on.  The Shiva expansion will include many new features and CCP has updated the Shiva section of the features page with, "...loads of information on the features, updates and changes coming with EVE's future expansion."  Here's a sample:

They are more commonly knowns as dungeons, that consist of many scenarios tied together, are not surrounded by walls and do not have undead space rats. So we call them Complexes. They are multi-leveled with escalating difficulty, have more structured game play, ideal for new players and offer big rewards at the end. They also look pretty damn good.

The main difference from single level Scenarios is that structures are destroyable, you need to go through a linear path and the loot drop is more varied since you are shooting down battlestations, not ships, so expect mineral or ore drops, blueprints, various commodities and skills. They will vary in difficulty, usually based 2 to 4 security levels below the security level they are residing in i.e. an Complex in 0.7 space would have 0.5-0.3 difficulty.

Commanders and Officers might show up in them, as they will in asteroid belts and other locations, but they are as rare as hair on an Gallente back.

Also, a Shiva Design and Feedback board has been added to the official forums as a place where players and developers may discuss the design aspects of the expansion.

EVE Online : New Chronicle - Tides of Change

Posted Apr 27, 2004 by Craig McGregor

The EVE Online site has posted a new chronicle titled "Tides of Change".  Fans of EVE and the Sci-Fi genre should find it to be a cool read.  Here is a snippet:

Shan stubbed his cigarette on the deck, despite the Kapitan's earlier admonitions about in-station regulations. The old bastard was soft after his years with those paper-pushing Fed Navy pod-wetters, soft as the blubber that hung from him. Besides, with the situation the way it was today, their high and mighty Legionnaire had better things to worry about than a smudge on the platform.

Climbing into the pod and fastening himself, Shan reflected on the current state of affairs. Ever since the Alliance had been born, the smattering of independent outfits morphing and mutating into the massive, brutal beast it was today, things just hadn't been the same in Curse. The Salvies had been the first to complain, of course - you couldn't fart in Curse space without the Salvies getting up in arms about it - but within a month it had become clear that this new coalition was nothing to be taken lightly. Squadron after squadron of Cartel fighters had fallen to Alliance battleships as their prized 'roid fields were slowly wrested from their grasp.

EVE Online : Approaching 10,000

Posted Mar 22, 2004 by Reed Hubbard

EVE Online continues to break simultaneous user records.  This weekend they recorded their highest ever user population.

This evening at 21:04, 8,867 played EVE Online at the same time. This is the twelfth consecutive Sunday that EVE Online breaks what is probably a world record for highest number of players together, at the same time, in the same persistent 3D world.

With the impending closing of Earth & Beyond, this number is likely to climb as users migrate to other spaceflight simulations like EVE and Jumpgate, both of which are offering special trials to current E&B players.

EVE Online : Earth & Beyond Trial Program

Posted Mar 20, 2004 by Reed Hubbard

As reported on this website, Electronic Arts has announced September 22, 2004 as the date for the closing of Earth & Beyond.  CCP is looking to fill the void by offering existing E&B players a special trial of their space-based MMORPG, EVE Online.

This upgrade program will include a no-obligation free trial of EVE Online and an in-game walkthrough of the game by an EVE volunteer who will explain the differences between the two games and help with the transition into EVE from Earth and Beyond.

The details may be found by following this link.

EVE Online : Subscription Price Changes

Posted Feb 17, 2004 by Andrew Collins

Eve Online will be officially making changes to the subscription plans for both Europe and the United States as of February 25th, 2004.

"Due to changes in currency rates and value added tax legislation in Europe we must adjust our subscription price plans."

"Our European players will be affected by the European Union E-commerce Directive 2002/38/EC, Regulation 792/2002. This stipulates that all EU residents must pay a Value Added Tax (VAT) on electronically supplied services including online games. We are thus obligated to add a VAT on all payment transactions for customers living within the EU."

In view of this, the pricing structure for Europe will be:"

Cost/month* Total cost*
1-month-plan E$ 14.95 E$ 14.95
3-month-plan E$ 11.95 E$ 35.85
6-month-plan E$ 10.95 E$ 65.70

* VAT included

"For our players in the rest of the world, what affects us is that our revenues are denominated in US dollars, while our expenses are in Icelandic kronas. As you are probably aware of the US dollar has fallen in value quite dramatically in the last couple of years, and that trend doesn't seem to be changing. We can absorb usual currency fluctuations for limited periods but this has been going on for too long a time now."

In view of this, the pricing structure outside Europe will be:

Cost/month Total cost
1-month-plan $ 14.95 $ 14.95
3-month-plan $ 11.95 $ 35.85
6-month-plan $ 10.95 $ 65.70

"As can be seen we have done our very best to mitigate the effects of this by keeping 3-month and 6-month plans at the same price as before and only increase the 1-month subscription rate by 2 US dollars."
