One Jump Home : Winter Has Come

Posted Dec 27, 2011 by William Murphy

War has broken out in EVE Online, and this week's One Jump Home recounts the events that led to its arrival and the possibilities of what such an upheaval may lead to.  Read on!

Earlier in the year I, and many other news media outlets, reported that the former Northern Coalition, mainstay power-bloc in EVE Online had collapsed outright under the immense pressure of the powerful Alliances known as WhiteNoise, NorthernCoalitionDOT and RaidenDOT. These 3 entities backed with the seemingly endless ISK of the Drone Russian Federation and helped by the formidable itinerant entity known as Pandemic Legion had successfully vanquished the now dead Northern Coalition and happily took their prize: The vast technetium wealth of the North.

EVE Online : Arnar 'CCP Zulu' Gylfason Steps Down

Posted Dec 22, 2011 by Suzie Ford

EVE Online's senior producer, Arnar "CCP Zulu" Gylfason has officially relinquished the reins after eighteen tumultuous months at the forefront of development for EVE. Jon "CCP Unifex" Lander will be taking over the helm . Gylfason has penned a short farewell and Lander posted an introduction and vision for the future of EVE Online.

The task ahead of us in 2012 is not to be taken lightly. We are changing EVE’s internal project structure to bring it in line with a product that has nearly 200 people working on it and making sure that everyone is concentrating on delivering a game which has real value for our players. As well as changing the project organization, we will also be spending time on improving our internal tools, pipelines and processes to improve our efficiency and effectiveness for the future.

One Jump Home : Blood on the Snow

Posted Dec 13, 2011 by Suzie Ford

EVE Online is a very complex place to call one's home.  In our latest One Jump Home column, we explore the depths of the Drone Regions, the heart of the Russian empire in EVE: UAxDeath, and how one man turned the space into an industrial behemoth.

When CCP added the Drone Regions to EVE Online, the scuttle to acquire them can be said to have taken its time. With hundreds of systems full of mediocre moon minerals and NPCs that did not reward the player with flat ISK, but rather a large handful of mineral compounds - The community was perplexed at best. How were players supposed to survive in these regions? Who would fight to defend them? Who would care? Few bothered to answer that question, but one Russian man saw what the purpose of the space truly was: Industrialist nullsec heaven. That man is arguably one of the most famous men in EVE, that man is arguably one of the best Russian politicians in EVE. That man is UAxDeath.

Don't hesitate! The CCP fleet is mobilizing to escort valuable goods and CCP devs to the annual holiday party. EVE Online players might want to check the valuable intel that's being disseminated on the official forums and then ATTACK!

Edit1: This is happening today, time to start fitting your ships!

Edit2: Reports are coming in that the CCP Christmas caravan is mobilizing within the next hour and their destination seems to be somewhere in the Great Wildlands ! We strongly suggest you start gathering up your fleets and start heading in that direction!

EVE Online : Crucible Expansion is Live

Posted Nov 29, 2011 by Suzie Ford

EVE Online players have a lot to look forward to with today's release of the winter expansion, Crucible. Crucible brings a lot of upgrades and several new features into the game. CCP Soundwave has penned a new blog post talking about what the team has accomplished with Crucible and what the next year will bring to EVE Online.

The good news is that the 18 months are over and it feels pretty good. We had about 4-6 weeks of actual development time to put this release together and I honestly feel that this is the best release we’ve done in years. The recipe contains a few teaspoons of really good looking people, an ounce of love for EVE and is topped off with good ideas from the community.

One Jump Home : For Whom the Bell Tolls

Posted Nov 29, 2011 by Suzie Ford

In our latest One Jump Home column, we delve into the depths of the rumor mill, the supposed death of Alliances, the forging of new empires and all of the other things that pique the collective attention of EVE Online players. Read on and then leave us a few thoughts in the comments.

Recently the rumour mill went into full swing with regards to the apparent oncoming death of Morsus Mihi. I can't say I have any vested interest in whichever way this pendulum of fate swings. On one hand Morsus Mihi are historical figures in EVE Online. They kept the north in good stead for many years and were always reliable and stable. However as their lives in the North came to an end and the technetium wells dried up they found themselves in a strange position, an unfamiliar position, and a downright alien position. Ancient as they were, they hadn't felt the pain of eviction in many years and the events that followed left many of the remaining power blocks feeling the same sort of sympathy you'd feel for an old man who has truly lost his mind, yet in his youth was a sharp, well-kept gent.

EVE Online : Crucible Battlecruiser Spotlight

Posted Nov 28, 2011 by Suzie Ford

EVE Online fan 'Flamewave' has created a terrific cinematic look at the four new battlecruisers coming with the Crucible expansion set to deploy November 29th. The ships are the Oracle, the Talos, the Tornado, and the Naga. The video also gives a great look at new trails, nebulae and more. Check it out and enjoy the awesome music that accompanies it.

EVE Online : Live Event Sees Devs Taken to Task

Posted Nov 25, 2011 by Suzie Ford

EVE Online developers created an impromptu live event on November 23rd in which they banded together to 'attract notice' and to pick a fight. And fight they did...to their deaths, it turns out.

The blog post details the day's slaughter with ships destroyed and much, much more. But there is also this:

Additional props to Beastoria for landing the final blow on four CCP ships, with Fattymcbutterpants (a name which had the CCP fleet unified in laughter when called out as primary on EVE voice) and another character who should probably be renamed, both achieving three final blows each. We’re also happy to report that whilst NPCs did indeed manage to destroy 13 ships in Tama yesterday, no CCP ships were lost to NPCs. And that's despite CCP Sreeg’s Nanobot Accelerator rigged buffer tank.

From the report, it sounds as if the team and the community had a ball. Check out the full post on the EVE Online site.

EVE Online : Crucible Coming November 29th

Posted Nov 16, 2011 by Suzie Ford

The fifteenth expansion to EVE Online is being called "Crucible" and will go live on November 29th. Developers are describing Crucible as "EVE Reforged".

Some of the major improvements players are lauding:

  • Four fan-designed battlecruisers built to deliver swift and effective destruction to the opposition
  • Over a dozen stunningly remade nebulae, changing the look and feel of EVE's universe completely
  • Other fan-favorite graphical improvements such as engine trails, warp tunnels and shadows
  • Time dilation in fleet flights -- adjusting time itself to keep fairness alive when hundreds of players face off against each other
  • 3 new factional captain's quarters with unique, artistic looks
  • A significant ship rebalancing effort, to bring greater diversity and balance to large and small scale conflicts
  • A lot of small changes -- from fonts to UI to Doomsday devices to PvE tweaks

One Jump Home : Interrupted by Starshine

Posted Nov 15, 2011 by Suzie Ford

Yet another MMORPG.com writer has had to tear himself away from the allure of Skyrim in order to fulfill obligations to our readers. In this week's One Jump Home, Ross McDermott takes a look at CCP's recent ship overhauls and at the four ships coming to an EVE server near you. Read on and then let us know what you think in the comments!

Hybrids have been significantly overhauled, the power-grid and CPU requirements to fit Hybrid weaponry have been lowered allowing for greater flexibility on the hulls they're meant to be mounted too. In addition to this, several Hybrid hulls - mainly Gallente hulls - had their manoeuvrability and their agility increased, allowing for greater base speed and attempting to negate the speed penalties applied via fitting armor modules such as Trimark Armor Pumps or Armor Repair Systems.

EVE Online : New Window, New Features

Posted Nov 10, 2011 by Suzie Ford

The EVE Online blog has been updated with a new post called "Improvements to the Fitting Window" packed with news about ways players can check on the damage output of their ship.

Although keeping this vital information for ourselves for all those years (well, you had already figured this out with third party tools hadn’t you) might sound like a big joke, there were actual technical reasons for the delay, but that technical debt has now been paid in full with the introduction of something we call “Client Side Dogma”, which will be covered in full detail in a later blog. The gist of it is that it’s now much easier to correctly display how values are affected by skills, ships, implants and/or modules in the EVE client, which opens up the doors to a lot of cool (and in some cases way overdue) things.

EVE Online : Scaling the UI

Posted Nov 08, 2011 by Suzie Ford

The latest EVE Online developer blog deals with a new feature being introduced for pilots everywhere: Scale-able UI. Part of the reason for this new feature is based on the recent introduction of the scale-able font size. The blog is fairly technical but, in true EVE fashion, has pictures to illustrate the point!

EVE Online : The Caldari Naga

Posted Nov 04, 2011 by Suzie Ford

The EVE Online blog has been updated with yet another ship that will be sailing into the game with the Winter Expansion. Called the Caldari Naga, the ship was originally designed for a recent contest as a battle ship but refitted to be deployed as a battlecruiser.

The Caldari Naga can utilize torpedo launchers,  rail guns and blasters. According to the dev team, it is a formidible opponent in battle.

EVE Online : New Nebulae Incoming

Posted Nov 03, 2011 by Suzie Ford

CCP t0rfifrans has penned the latest developer blog on the EVE Online site. This time the game's nebulae are under the microscope. According to t0rfifrans, the idea behind the redesign of the nebulae is to "make the world more real and give people a better sense of scale and location in the universe."

Players will see changes in space depending on where they are and as they near a specific phenomenon, the environment will change, become more detailed. As players make space jumps, the backdrops will change as well. Lastly, Lowsec and nullsec will become the dark and scary places they are meant to be.

One Jump Home : The Serpent’s Apple

Posted Nov 01, 2011 by Suzie Ford

Naysayers aside, many EVE Online players are enjoying something called F-U-N. In his latest One Jump Home column, MMORPG.com's Ross McDermott talks about some of the good times he's been enjoying in game and predicts that the future of EVE is still quite bright. Check it out and then leave us your comments.

And so, fun was had. Some followed, most were hesitant, and few considered the political ramifications of their actions. It took two pilots, two from Test Alliance Please Ignore and one from Elite Space Guild - The Alliance I happen to be the CEO of - to get caught in the crossfire before it all came tumbling down. After a night of fanciful free-flying through Delve, the fleet of Pandemic Legion, TEST and ESG were ready to pack up their bags. Good fights were nowhere to be had and tiredness and boredom were beginning to take hold. Sleepy pilots were ready for their beds, so ships were hauled towards the system known as 1DH and all the gates were green.

EVE Online : The Gallente Talos

Posted Oct 27, 2011 by Suzie Ford

CCP Guard has posted a great new look at the Gallente Talos, a new ship that will arrive with the Winter expansion to EVE online.

The Talos was heavily influenced by the winning entry in the recent EVE Online: Design a Starship contest held on Deviant Art. Michael Shierup's ship was originally named Seraphim but it was decided to rename the battlecruiser Talos after the Grecian guardian of the island of Crete.

Find out more about the Talos on the EVE Online blog.

EVE Online : Crash Reports Update

Posted Oct 27, 2011 by Suzie Ford

CCP Redundancy has updated the EVE Online blog with the news that players can now turn off crash reporting. This decision was made in response to player requests for the ability to turn off crash reports.

According to the post, players now have this ability but it will be further refined and simplified for the Winter expansion.
