Anarchy Online : New Profession. The Shade.

Posted May 07, 2003 by Matthew Goodard

The Shade
In Shadowlands, the players of Anarchy Online will have the possibility to choose between two new professions, the Shade and the Keeper. This week, we shed the light on the Shade, a sneaky new character.

The Shade is the opposite of everything that is light and good, and it's obvious he belongs to the "dark side", even though the character will not be evil per se. The Shade will be a tough solo character due to his limited hit points.

The Shade is really a melee class but will have a high focus on "procs" (a proc is a nano that is some times run on the fighting target during combat). Being expert in hand to hand fighting, the primary weapons will be of the piercing kind.

It's worth mentioning that he will not be able to use implants. In their place, you'll find trapped Spirits, which will give various benefits. Since it's an innate ability, the character won't need a surgery clinic to trap or release Spirits. His armor will often come in the form of "magical" tattoos, enabling truly unique profession abilities.

Nano-wise, the Shade will get mostly self-beneficial buffs. He will be able to buff himself to be able to do more powerful procs. His repertoire will consist of direct damage on target, stuns, initiative debuffs, and hitpoint/nanopoint DoTs, run speed debuffs, short duration fears, evade debuffs and trader-like leeching. Through perk-enabled special abilities, he will be able to drain attack rating, defense rating and health from the enemy. The longer a fight lasts, the more power he drains.

Story-wise, the Shade is seen as a very selfish character you should never fully trust. He will literally backstab you at first opportunity if it's to his gain. The Shade comes from the lowest pits in the Shadowlands, where they were constructed by the first explorers so they could specialize in getting around in the darker, deadlier places of the realm.

The profession is limited to the owners of Shadowlands, and to play the Shade you must start out inside Shadowlands. With the Shade, you begin your life as a neutral. Which side you ultimately wind up supporting depends on the actions you take!

Anarchy Online : AO News: Behind the Scenes

Posted Apr 24, 2003 by Craig McGregor

This just in from the most recent AO newsletter:

Missions Upgrade

Behind the Scenes

Hi, and welcome to the latest Anarchy Online newsletter. This time around the focus is on the mission upgrade which have hit the live servers today. This upgrade is one of the largest in Anarchy Online so far, both in terms of content addition and technical improvements. In short, the mission system has been getting a total revamp to make it more fun, diverse, and not the least, a lot better looking.

As you might know, the mission system in Anarchy Online is totally unique when it comes to MMORPGs. The "camping is not so fun" attitude has always been central in the design, and mission terminals with personalised content on demand has been at the core of this. With more than 15 million missions completed so far, they are most definitively a vital part of the gameplay experience in AO.

The upgrade introduces new looks, better layout, improved view distance, mines, turrets, cameras, new loot system and so forth and so on. And not to forget; all brown looking caves are now gone :-) I therefore introduce Game Designer Tom Erland U. Ekenes who provides an interesting summary of the mission upgrade and the design goals behind it.

The Mission Upgrade

Hi everyone, the most striking and immediate part you will encounter in the new system is the elaborate layout inside the missions and a greatly improved view distance. This adds up to an exceptional ambience and a genuine "mission like" feel to the environment. By increasing the height and width of the rooms and adding the "modular hallways" system, it expands the space for players and monsters. The added headroom provided an opportunity to design a really authentic layout. At the core it's all about extending variety and unsettling the predictable.

Anyhow, it's not all about looks. New chests and more varied loot have been added. Mines, cameras and turrets introduces new gameplay factors. In team missions, mines and different controllers are a special treat, giving the whole team bonus if disabled. A proximity warning sound and a flashing frame around the mini-map will be most helpful, making it possible to sneak past mines and avoid them going off. You can even see cameras and turrets scanning the environment for intruders on the mini-map with the right map upgrade! Disabling one of the sentries controllers in a mission provides a great tactical advantage as they "knock out" all cameras or turrets in the dungeon.

So-called "Blitzing" is going to be affected by the upgraded mission system. Pet pathing, getting a major upgrade in the previous content update, made monsters move smarter. Now, with the introduction of cameras, turrets and new layouts in this mission upgrade; be prepared for the unexpected! To reassure those who have "blitzing" as a way of life: No, it does not mean the end of "blitzing". Changing the difficulty? Yes. Making it impossible? No.

By pushing current technology to its limits, the goal was to add as much new and exciting gameplay variety as possible. Anyhow, this first mission upgrade will definitely not be the last you will encounter in Anarchy Online.

Yours truly,
Tom Erland U. Ekenes

Anarchy Online : Major Content Update!

Posted Apr 23, 2003 by Craig McGregor

Major content update to Anarchy Online - Mission system revamped

Anarchy Online sees a major update today when the new Mission update hits the live servers. The "Mission Update" is one of the largest content additions to Anarchy Online so far, both in terms of new gameplay, looks and technical improvements.

The main focus of the update has, as the name inclines, been our unique mission system. We have now revamped all missions areas in order to make it more fun, diverse and not the least a lot better looking.

The "camping is not so fun" attitude has always been central in the design of Anarchy Online, and the Mission Terminals, with their personalized content on demand, has been at the core of this. With more than 15 million missions completed so far, they are most definitively a vital part of the gameplay experience in AO.

This update further proves that AO continues to lead the way as a cutting edge MMORPG. No other online game has anything similar.

The "Mission Update" introduces new looks, better layout, improved view distance, mines, turrets, cameras, new loot system, better pathing due to larger rooms, and not the least a whole host of other changes.

Anarchy Online : Shadowlands Dev Chat

Posted Mar 05, 2003 by Mark Schembri

Gamershell hosted a chat with the developers of Anarchy Online specifically focusing on the upcoming expansion for the sci-fi based MMORPG.  Here's a byte:

How big a graphics update can we expect compared to todays AO?

[Morten Byom] In shadowlands we are focusing on making all aspects of the environment work together as best as it possibly can. The result is a world that looks fantastic if you ask me, and it looks much better ingame than what we have shown so far in screenshots. We have pushed the engine a little bit more and what we got out looks really good and still being able to keep a good framerate.

You can see the rest here.
