Overwatch : Beta is Back + New Progression System Detailed

Posted Feb 09, 2016 by Suzie Ford

Jeff Kaplan is hosting a new Developer Update video that discusses the Overwatch progression system. As players participate in matches, experience is earned that at certain intervals will result in being given a loot box that can contain a number of random cosmetic items including skins, sound files, player icons, emotes, sprays, victory poses and highlight intros. Each of these can come in common, rare, epic, and legendary quality.

In an interesting twist, if an item is awarded that a player already has in inventory, credits will instead be issued that can be spent in the Hero Gallery to unlock items not yet owned.

According to Kaplan and the videos below, this is just a start, is already in the now-ongoing restarted closed beta and the team is looking for player feedback.

Currently, you can gain experience by completing Quick Play and Play vs A.I. games. The amount of experience you earn will be determined by a variety of factors including overall participation, whether or not your team won, what medals and commendations you received, and more. Quick Play games will also award more experience than Play vs A.I. games to account for the difference in difficulty between the two modes.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition : UPDATE - David Gaider Joins Beamdog

Posted Feb 09, 2016 by Suzie Ford

UPDATE: David Gaider has confirmed his employment with Beamdog in a new Twitter post.

In a series of not-so-cryptic cryptic Tweets by several folks, it appears that ex-Bioware writer David Gaider may have joined the studio that has brought us enhanced, modernized versions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale. Beamdog is home to a number of ex-Bioware employees including Brent Knowles and Shawn Potter. Gaider had most recently worked as the lead writer on Dragon Age: Inquisition.

From the Beamdog blog:

We also hired a writer named Dave. He seems pretty cool so far.

Beamdog Lead Designer Phillip Daigle said:

Beamdog have hired DA:O lead designer Brent Knowles and “a writer named Dave”

— Dice Geeks (@dicegeeks) February 9, 2016

And Gaider himself Tweeted:

Starting a new job: 25% paperwork, 25% documentation, 150% confusion. I definitely need more stuff on my desk.

Camelot Unchained : Challenging PvE

Posted Feb 09, 2016 by Suzie Ford

Watching videos of players that manage to get through Skyrim and Fallout 4 playing as a pacifist is both astonishing and an example of my favorite thing about humans, our creative ingenuity. These determined gamers refuse to accept what is laid before them, instead they bend the game to their will and rewrite it on their terms. It got me thinking, could PVErs do the same in a game as PVP focused as Camelot Unchained? I think it might be possible, but to do so requires us taking a new look at an old term. Players vs Environment, not Player’s vs NPCs-not entirely.

Blade & Soul : Finding its Niche Audience

Posted Feb 08, 2016 by Suzie Ford

It has been almost a month since the EU/NA version of Blade and Soul was released. Many current players have noticed a reduction of the population on servers which is to be expected, of course, though there is some thought that this will continue until the game finds its core audience.
