General : US Operations Lower Perfect World's Earnings

Posted Nov 26, 2014 by Suzie Ford

According to the latest financials released by Perfect World Entertainment, operations in the United States have had an adverse affect on the company's earnings. While PWE made a slight profit overall in a year-to-year comparison, the increase was due largely to revenue generated by Chinese earnings by DOTA 2 and a pair of mobile games that have scored well with the same audience.

"In view of US subsidiary's recent performance and near-term business outlook that are below our expectations, we recognized acquisition-related impairments in this quarter," said CEO Robert Xiao in a statement.

"However, we are still confident in the long-term prospects of our US subsidiary given its strong R&D and operational capabilities as well as promising pipeline."

IGN has a new interview with Bioware's Jeff Hickman. In the article, he indicates that if Star Wars: The Old Republic players like what they're seeing in Shadow of Revan, they won't be disappointed when they see what 2015 will bring to the game's story.

"This is the first step on the next great story adventure for Star Wars: The Old Republic," Hickman says. "If you like what you see in Shadow of Revan, wait until you see what we have coming for you next year. Next year is our big year."

With Thanksgiving here in the US this week, it is probably a good time to talk about food. The changes to crafting in the game continue, but Provisioning will not just intend to increase immersion in the game world, but help players with management as well.

General : Say Hello to Y2K

Posted Nov 25, 2014 by Suzie Ford

AckkStudios may be a small development studio comprised of a few family members, but don't call it a family business. "I usually cringe when people say that," co-founder Andrew Allanson joked during a phone interview this week. "But it is, yeah."

EverQuest II : Altar of Malice Released for All

Posted Nov 25, 2014 by Suzie Ford

Sony Online Entertainment has announced the release of the eleventh EverQuest II expansion, Altar of Malice. All-Access members have been playing for a couple of weeks, but the expansion is now open to all. Altar of Malice continues the tenth anniversary celebration and brings players a new zone, new adventures, new quests, monsters, gear and much, much more.

Norrath enters a new age, one darkened by the cold war between Freeport and Qeynos. The end of the last age cost them both dearly and neither can risk making the first move...yet. Outside powers can help them rebuild, like the Far Seas Trading Company, but lately its ports have run mysteriously silent. Emissaries sent from the cities have gone missing and any scout sent to investigate does not return.

Only the bravest adventurers will take on the quest to journey across the mysterious Shattered Seas to face monstrous deinodons, pint-sized yet perilous pygmies, bone-armored lizard men, salty pirates, and other new creatures lurking amongst the shadows. And while there are dangers on the waters, beware the thickening evil plot growing deep in the Kithicor Woods. Its maliciousness could make even the undead's skin crawl...

World of Warcraft : New Male and Female Blood Elf Models Revealed

Posted Nov 25, 2014 by Suzie Ford

Blizzard promised to give World of Warcraft players a look at the forthcoming character model updates for the game's most popular race, the Blood Elves. Delivering on that promise, here is what players can expect when the updated models go live.

Hello and welcome to the Blood Elf edition of Artcraft! We know that many of you have been waiting for this update, so I’ll just provide some quick background and then get straight into the imagery.

We’re aware that it’s not ideal to see a mix of older player character models next to newer player character models, especially when you happen to be a player of the Blood Elf variety—and we’re working as diligently to remedy that situation as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality. We don’t have an exact ETA for when you’ll see these in-game, but we’re happy with the direction of this update with regards to the model and textures; we’re now focusing on model and texture variations, as well as rigging and animating. We’ve streamlined the process quite a bit, so hopefully (knock on wood) those things will go smoothly and we’ll be able to roll these out quickly.

Senior Artist Dusty Nolting is focusing on the female model—here are his thoughts:

The Horde has classically been about brutes, blood, and thunder. The Blood Elves bring a bit of subtlety to the Horde, and I think that was one of the most important aspects of the Blood Elves to maintain. For the female specifically, something we did often was move things around in small but deliberate increments, to make sure everything was just right. It’s the delicate details like her nose shape or fingertips that represent the most challenging parts of upgrading the female.

WildStar : The Story Unfolds

Posted Nov 25, 2014 by Suzie Ford

Carbine Studios has a metric ton of lore to reveal over the next few months as it begins a new series that will explore the story behind WildStar. In the first short story, "Voyage of the Nomad", the Cassian's journey to Nexus is revealed in all its glory and horror.

Moving forward, every two weeks on Tuesday at 10 am PDT, a new entry will be entered into the story page and its timeline of events until all eleven tales have been told. The stories will unfold chronologically, until they reach the events that players have already experienced in WildStar’s main story.

The Free Zone : Long-Distance Thoughts on G-STAR 2014

Posted Nov 25, 2014 by Suzie Ford

Unbeknownst to many in this part of the world, the latest iteration of G-STAR wrapped up its usual four-day run on Sunday. For observers in this hemisphere, Korea's trade and consumer game industry event has never even remotely approached the levels of visibility and hype that its western counterparts typically generate. Accordingly, it's seldom held in the same regard. Nonetheless, this year's version drew my attention for various reasons.

The Crew : 'Don't Believe Everything You Read' says Ubi

Posted Nov 25, 2014 by Suzie Ford

Ubisoft has an interesting new post on The Crew blog today that lets players know that reviewers will be able to start posting their thoughts as early as the game goes live in December. That announcement comes with the caveat that those reviewers may be basing their thoughts on early versions or beta versions of the game and that writers may not have seen The Crew in its optimal light.

For this very reason, The Crew will be available to media to begin their reviews when the game launches on December 2. There will be absolutely no embargo on any type of coverage once the game is available for sale. While we fully anticipate that you might see some reviews immediately at launch – largely built around the preview sessions we facilitated during the past months or the limited content of the closed and open betas – they won’t be based on optimal conditions or reflect the finished game. We sincerely hope everyone will take the time to customize their ride as they progress through all five regions, explore every corner of the map solo and with friends, dive into our competitive and cooperative mechanics, race to the end of the main campaign, choose a Faction and compete with your crew in Factions Wars, and so much more.

Marvel Heroes : The Heart of a Superhero Game is Being One

Posted Nov 25, 2014 by Suzie Ford

While not every game system or design feature directly serves this principle, at the end of the day the Marvel Heroes design team's goal is for a player to feel like a superhero.  This ambition was a core part of the development of our earlier Midtown Patrol game mode, and is just as much in evidence with the release of our latest patrol mode set in the Brooklyn district of Industry City.
