Guild Wars 2 : 'Major WvW Overhaul' Revealed in Cagey Reddit Post

Posted Nov 28, 2015 by Catherine Daro

Proving that ArenaNet does read players' posts on various sites and social media platforms, Colin Johanson has taken to a Reddit thread bemoaning legendary effects for Guild Wars 2 Engineers and announced that this was something the team would like to address in the future but that the focus right now is on "our major WvW overhaul", something that has apparently been in the works for over a year.

As an engineer main, this remains one of those things I'd love to see addressed...But the reality is we need the bulk of our own internal engineers (coders!) to continue to focus on stuff like our major WvW overhaul right now we've been working on for over a year that's much higher priority for the game over-all.

This remains on the someday that'd sure be awesome list. :)

Read more in that particular thread at the link above.

What changes would you like to see brought in to WvW? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.

The Repopulation : Hero Engine Troubles Could Cause Downtime

Posted Nov 28, 2015 by Catherine Daro

The Repopulation, built using the Hero Engine, stands the very real possibility that there will be serious downtime as a result of Idea Fabrik's financial issues. The development team has forewarned its community about possible outages as it searches for alternatives to the troubled engine, though it would necessitate "rebuilding the game from scratch code wise, though some things would convert over (art, data)".

Unfortunately at the time when we started out here the only viable options were Hero, Bigworld, or Torque 3D, with the first of those two having restrictive license agreements, and the third being a good renderering engine that lacked in MMO specific features. We weren't ever to fully be able to get out of the agreement.

The risk of downtime is very real at this point, though there is still also some reason for hope that this will resolve itself in a positive way. We have already begun some early work on the most likely contingency plan, so that we aren't just sitting idly. But we are limited still in what we can do as a result of being in money preservation mode while this plays out, so currently it's mostly prep work and experimentation.

As the alpha progresses, RSI is hard at work on server instability and is utilizing feedback from the player community to track down the issues causing the problem.

The List : Five Things to Do (Besides Shop) On Black Friday

Posted Nov 27, 2015 by Suzie Ford

Tell me if this cycle sounds familiar to you: you spend a good part of the year playing through your backlog of video games in the lulls between major releases, only to fill it back up again once a Steam Sale hits.  I myself am just cresting the wave of a number of older titles that have been collecting dust for some time (the most recent ventures include Shadow of Mordor, Super Mario 3D World, and A Link Between Worlds), and am simultaneously anticipating and avoiding holiday sales.

World of Warcraft : Demon Hunting in Alpha

As Illidan says, "You are not prepared" for my first impressions of the Demon Hunter!

A new World of Warcraft expansion is like our Olympics, or the World Cup. Every few years it swings around and becomes all consuming, until we forget about it a few months after the fact. Some of us, at least.

General : NCSoft's Master X Master is More Than Just Another MOBA

Posted Nov 26, 2015 by Suzie Ford

MOBAs are the hottest new genre that it seems like every company needs to develop a game for, and NCsoft is no different. The key thing here is that Master X Master, which was announced some years ago and is expected to arrive in the latter half of 2016, isn't just another MOBA. As part of my trip to Korea to check out NCsoft's headquarters in Pangyo, South Korea, we also attended the annual Korean video game trade show G Star in Busan which is just like PAX in Seattle but with way more booth babes. Amid the hustle and bustle of the show floor, I was given roughly a half hour of hands on time with Master X Master, including a preview of its PvE and PvP elements.
