The RPG Files : Destiny Sales Prove Review Scores Wrong

Posted Oct 24, 2014 by Suzie Ford

Too often, there exists a disparity between the feelings of game reviewers and game players. Time after time, we’re told a game is amazing only to find it out it doesn’t work (Sim City comes to mind). Or, we’re told a game is bad, just to find out that it’s a consumer hit. Such is the case with Destiny, the disappointing mega-hit we were told could only break our hearts with the letdown. What’s the deal, games industry? We answer that question, and break down the week’s biggest news, in this week’s RPG files.

League of Legends : Likely to Earn $1B in Microtransaction Revenue

Posted Oct 24, 2014 by Suzie Ford

League of Legends is closing in on the one billion dollar mark for total revenue earned solely through microtransaction sales. This is up sharply from last year's revenue total and puts them ahead of all other games worldwide, including last year's earnings winner, Crossfire.

League of Legends pulled in an estimated $964 million between January and September of this year, according to SuperData research (via VentureBeat), making the magical $1 billion mark almost a sure thing. And it's not alone: Last year's first-place finisher, the military FPS CrossFire, is at $897 million, Nexon's Dungeon Fighter Online is sitting at $891 million, and World of Warcraft has brought in $728 million. All them have a good shot at making it over the hump.

Also noteworthy is just how badly League of Legends is trouncing the other big free-to-play games in North American, Dota 2 and Hearthstone. Both made the list, but way, way back in the pack: Dota 2 is at number nine with $136 million in revenues, while Hearthstone brought up the rear with $114 million. I'm not going to shed too many tears for either of them, but it's a remarkable gap between them.

Have you purchased microtransaction items from the League of Legends store? Let us know!

Sudden Crisis : Renamed 'Sudden Crisis'

Posted Oct 24, 2014 by Suzie Ford

In an apparent nod to ongoing threats of litigation, the Seldon Crisis game, said to be loosely based around the works of Isaac Asminov, has been rebranded "Sudden Crisis". As part of the rebranding effort, the Indiegogo project has been updated (thanks, Vrika!) to reflect the new name.  According to the Sudden Crisis Facebook page, the game is largely the same, but with a new name.

Hi Guys

We want to let everyone know that the project and game now has a new name: "Sudden Crisis".

Everything stays the same, this is the last change needed to separate us from one world and open a new one, one wholly created by us and you.

You will shortly see the change take effect across our sites.

Let us know what you think of the new name!

Check out the Sudden Crisis Indiegogo page for more information about the game and its fundraising initiative.

General : Selling Convenience vs. Content

Posted Oct 24, 2014 by Suzie Ford

As far as free-to-play monetization models go, there are a couple of different overarching strategies that dominate today’s market.  On one side, you have games like ArcheAge, which offers convenience bonuses like elevated experience gain, increased labor points, and priority queuing for shelling out real cash.  On the other, you can see titles like The Lord of the Rings Online steadily offering some convenience and cosmetic items in their cash shops but doing a great deal of business selling content through quests and expansions.

TERA: Rising : Fate of Arun Expansion Announced

Posted Oct 23, 2014 by Suzie Ford

En Masse Entertainment has announced that the first expansion for TERA: Rising is on its way. Called "Fate of Arun", the expansion will take players to the home city of the Barakan race. In addition, the level cap will increase to 65. To celebrate the announcement, a trailer revealing the first information about Fate of Arun has been released.

But Fate of Arun isn't just about good looks and a new story with associated quests; En Masse also tells us that we'll see new zones, skills, dungeons, gear, and a new PvP battleground. Notably absent from this account is any mention of new classes or playable races, although I'll maintain hope that En Masse includes these in its promise of "vast systematic improvements to the gameplay experience." Considering that the new Reaper class already appeared earlier this year, that seems unlikely.

General : NCSoft Western Operations Layoffs Confirmed

Posted Oct 23, 2014 by Suzie Ford

NCSoft has confirmed that it is 'restructuring key operations" within the company that will include a round of layoffs across all Western propertiess, including Carbine Studios, developers of WildStar. This does not, however, include ArenaNet, developers of Guild Wars 2.

While decisions like this are always hard, they are necessary as we begin the implementation of a new strategy designed to strengthen our footing as a leader in global entertainment.

Moving forward, we will continue to focus on our core development capabilities and the intellectual properties (WildStar, Aion, Lineage, and Guild Wars franchises) that have made NCSOFT what it is today. However, we are looking to move into new business segments like mobile and tablet games as well as explore emerging technologies.

Again, the decision to reduce staff was not an easy one, and we sincerely wish everyone well in their next endeavors.

We'll keep you posted as the story develops.
