This week, not one, but two MMORPGs have announced a launch. This first is the highly anticipated expansion for NCSoft’s City of Heroes / City of Villains, Issue 7. The other is the official total launch of Dark and Light, which finally made it to “launched” on our games list. Both of these items were reported on June 6th..

One of the biggest complaints that people have had about Turbine’s new MMORPG, Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach, was that there was no solo content, and that in order to enjoy the game, you were forced to group. That all changed on June 6th, when Turbine announced details of a change that would add content for the single player.

You can read the release here.

This week, the MMORPG based on the descendants of a crashed space ship crew, announced that they would be closing their doors as the project is put on hold in its entirety. The game is Sigonyth: Desert Eternity.

City of Villains: December, 2005 Review

With the recent release of the game’s Issue 7 expansion, we thought that it might be fun to head back in time to December of 2005 and take a look at Laura Genender’s review of the game, a companion game to the already published City of Heroes, City of Villains.

Laura rated the game at a clean 8.0. She gave the game its highest points for Community, Role-Playing and Fun. Here is some of what she had to say:

  • As expected, there are numerous similarities between City of Heroes and City of Villains
  • Skills, at first glance, are a major disappointment; there are very few new powersets, and most of the new ones belong to the Masterminds.
  • In the kidnapping missions, I had some problems getting my victims to follow me without getting stuck.
  • Instead of being confined to contacts, villains can do randomly generated missions from the newspaper.
  • One of the most prominent new features of City of Villains is the base building system.
  • One of the big draws for City of Villains is that casual and hardcore friends can play at their own speed and still hang out and run missions together. This is made possible by the lackey system…

The Issue 7 expansion recieved an honorable mention for our Best Expansion category in our recent E3 awards. Also, our own Laura Genender recently penned a preview of the PvP addition in Issue 7 shortly before the expansion's launch. You can see that, here.

Game of the Week

Game of the week

Our game of the Week this week is the game formerly known as Project Entropia, that has now spawned a new name in Entropia Universe. This game has received a lot of attention recently because of its unique nature, and the unique things that are currently going on in-game.

Here’s a look at how this game describes itself: “The Entropia Universe is not a game. The Entropia Universe is for real. Real people, real activities and a Real Cash Economy in a massive online universe.

Join people from around the globe who use the Entropia Universe currency, the PED, to develop their characters everyday on the untamed planet of Calypso. The unique and secure Real Cash Economy allows you to transfer your accumulated PED back into real world funds.”

Gamer to English

This week’s Gamer to English is a simple word, and yet still a word that raises the heckles on many a gamer: expansion.

Rather than offering a concrete example or definition for this word, I wanted to open it up for your debating pleasure. What, in your mind defines an expansion for an MMORPG? Where is the line drawn between update and expansion? Should game companies charge for expansions? Do expansions help or hurt an MMORPG?

You can let us know what you think by visiting the specially created thread in our forums.
