Lord of the Rings Online: Preview

This week, with the NDA lifted, News Editor Garrett Fuller pens an exciting preview of Turbine’s Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar. The game itself is currently in the Open Beta phase of its production and Garrett, who has been living in the world of Middle Earth, returns to tell us a little bit about it.

In playing the Lord of the Rings Online Beta, I tried very hard not to have any expectations. I had read the books, seen the cartoons (yes you can still find them), watched the movies and now I was set to play the game.

  • The races were straight out of Middle Earth: Dwarf, Race of Men, Elf, and Hobbit.
  • Right from the beginning players are thrust into the storyline of Middle Earth.
  • The quest system in LOTRO is pretty standard. However, there are instanced quests at the end of certain zones which you can play solo, or as part of a group.
  • One of the things that works well in Lord of the Rings Online is the crafting and loot system. Players have the ability to craft a large variety of items as well as become experts in different types of lore.
  • The graphics in the game are great to look at and the landscapes of Middle Earth are realized vividly.

Game of the Week
Game of the week

This week’s Game of the Week is known to both hardcore MMORPGers and casual gamers who still think that WoW means “an exclamation of surprise, wonder, pleasure, or the like”(Dictionary.com).

Puzzle Pirates is a family friendly MMORPG that lets players become scurvy sea dogs as they engage in mini-game mayhem.

Pirates can wander around on land and sail the thirty-seven seas with their crew. When your Pirate sails, or swordfights, or navigates, the appropriate Puzzle game is launched. Good Puzzling thereby brings victories and accrues great fortunes to you and your fellow Pirates.
