Ryzom Ring: Review

Last week we reviewed the latest expansion to The Saga of Ryzom. The game has been in the news lately when it was announced they went into receivership - the European equivalent to bankruptcy - shortly after this expansion's launch. Nonetheless, Staff Writer Donna Desborough took a look and liked what she saw.

Here are some quotes from the review:

  • Ryzom Ring, or R2, is the free add-on that allows its players to create their own content. Fully scripted and controlled scenarios that others players can enter and play through. From hack n' slash battles to roleplaying stories players are able to create whatever their imaginations can think of.
  • Even if you don't have that experience, you'll grasp triggers easily enough after you've done a couple of them.
  • Masterless scenarios are, basically, a hands off affair. You turn the scenario on and let it run with all your scripting and mobs and just let the players run through it and it all runs its course.
  • There has in the past been mentioned paid hosting on the Nevrax servers so that the scenario is always live and running, but how this will work or how much it will cost hasn't been confirmed.
  • Overall, at this stage, I believe that Ryzom Ring is a good tool for players.

Game/On and DB Issues

This week, Garrett Fuller returns for a commentary episode of the Game/On podcast as he and co-host Jon Wood discuss Warhammer Online, World of Warcraft, Firefly, Fallout and much more! Game/On is a weekly podcast MMORPG.com hosts each Friday.

You can listen to the podcast here.

Loyal fans of the site might have noticed that their posts disappeared last week. Unfortunately, even the best laid plans don't always turn out as we like and one of our backup content servers ran out of space. As a result, most content between the 8th and 15th was lost, including message board posts. We apologize for any problems this may have caused.

You can check out the message boards here.

Game of the Week

Game of

the week

RF Online is our Game of the Week. Why? Well, like us, Codemasters decided to overhaul the game's website last week. Thus, RF Online gets the nod.

In the future, humanity will become extinct and the diminishing of desperately needed natural resources throughout the galaxy will result in a no-holds-barred bid to control what little remains. One planet in the distant, magic enriched Novus system is discovered to contain such minerals. The three descendents of humankind - the technologically advanced cyborg Accretia, the inventive techno-magic Bellato, and the spiritually guided, magically gifted Cora - have made the journey to this remote planet and are now using every advantage at their disposal to seize the coveted Talic Mines. The power to save an entire race is in your hands.

RF Online was imported to the western market from Asia and provides players with a sci-fi RvR experience.

This week, we continued with our opinion pieces on the world of MMOs.

On Monday, Dan Mann handed out his MMOWTF Awards.

Tuesday, new editor Jon Wood's Community Spotlight looked at reaction to the announcement of a Firefly MMO.

Finally, on Thursday Steve Wilson's Casual Play said raiding needs to die.

We also started something new, if not totally opinion-like. Laura Genender released "At a Glance", which is a short look at an MMO many people may not have heard of. The subject of this article was OZ World.
