Final Fantasy XI

This past week, MMORPG.com published our newest review. This time around, Derek Czerkaski takes an in-depth look at the game, Final Fantasy XI, the popular RPG franchise's foray into the realm of MMORPGs.

Czerkaski rates the game at a 6.5, a full 1.6 points below our current user rating of 8.1. Low marks for this game come in the categories of Sound (5), Role-Playing (3) and Customer Serive (3). Below, you will find some memorable quotes from the review:

  • One of the more interesting aspects of FFXI is that there is a dark, complex storyline supporting the mainframe of the game.
  • FFXI has a very limited amount of options regarding the creation of your personal avatar.
  • Final Fantasy XI has some spectacular graphics, given its age [Four Years] and its consumer base.
  • For the sound effects, I honestly can't say anything positive about. The noise of your character swinging their weapon at the enemy is, at best, dull and uninspired.
  • Role-playing is present in FFXI and the world of Vana'diel, even though it's very, very rare. There are presently not any designated role-playing servers, and it's a rarity to observe much present in-game.
  • FFXI is a very group-oriented game. Almost three hours into the game, you'll be partying for the rest of your experience in Vana'diel.
  • While the game is not perfect, it's both a memorable and an enjoyable gaming experience, and I think it has a lot to offer any player who's willing to give it a fair chance.

Game of the Week

Game of the week
This week's Game of the Week is the ever-controversial Star Wars: Galaxies. Whether you like it or hate it, you have to admit that SWG has caused a lot of controversy throughout not only the gaming world, but the mainstream media as well.

Based on the extremely popular Star Wars franchise, this game was highly anticipated and hyped throughout its development phase. Producers and developers, however, saw post-launch problems with the game and made changes in both the CU (Combat Update) and the NGE (New Game Experience).

For dramatically altering their game some customers have blasted Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts. The general consensus at among MMORPG.com board posters is frustration. While that seems to be the general feeling, there are still those who support the right of Galaxies developers to change their product in any way that they see fit and others who enjoy the altered game more than before.

Of all of the MMORPGs that have either been cancelled or ended, which one do you miss most?

Post your answers here.
