Age of Empires Online: Review
The Age of Empires franchise has long been a favorite of strategy fans. When Age of Empires Online debuted, fans of both MMOs and strategy games rejoiced. Does the game live up to his vaunted pedigree? Find out in our official Age of Empires review.

If you've played any previous entries in the series, you're going to be in for a bit of a shock in terms of style. Gone are the realistic environments and militaries, instead they've been replaced by a cartoony, cel-shaded look. The troops have become heavily stylised with oversized muscles and little chicken legs; it's not an Age of Empires experience you'll have encountered before, and this will turn some people off. Personally, I found the game on the whole to be so different from the others in the franchise that it didn't bother me too much. The animations are slick and again very in-keeping with the style of the game, whether it's an archer attacking or a villager fishing. It may not be what you were hoping for from your next Age of Empires fix, but the design is certainly coherent and doesn't jar with itself.

It's the week of the annual Game Developer's Conference and you know what that means: TONS of new looks at games that are coming soon. In today's First Look Preview, we check out Bigpoint's just-announced Game of Thrones MMO. A cross-faction PVP sandbox? This is something you don't want to miss! Read on!

I will say this about Game of Thrones, it looks very impressive. The quality of the game is very high and players will have a lot to be excited about once more details are revealed. Overall my impression about Game of Thrones is that it will wind up being a gorgeous and truly epic MMORPG in a browser-based wrapper. The game is beautiful look at and it's unreal to think it is running in something like FireFox or Chrome. We were very surprised after this presentation and cannot wait to see what Game of Thrones as in store for us. There are a lot of details to come, but whatever you do... don't discount ArtPlant's game. This one could really shock the hardcore MMO world.

Game of the Week
RIFT is a fantasy MMORPG developed and published by Trion Worlds. In RIFT, the world of Telara is being invaded by six different planes (fire, earth, air, water, life, death) through tears in the world called "Rifts." Players fighting for either the Guardian or Defiant factions are tasked with keeping the planar forces at bay in order to save Telara and drive back the forces of the game's villain, Regulos, the dragon god of extinction.

The aforementioned rifts make up the game's dynamic content features, as the rifts can open up in any part of the game world. The forces that spill out of these rifts will seek to spread their influence throughout the game world and even take over territory, leaving both a tangible and visible mark upon the game world.

RIFT also features the "Soul Attunement" system, which essentially allows players to multi-class. Different souls are acquired throughout the course of the game and up to three can be arranged at a time to create a build. Builds can be stored for use in several loadouts, allowing players to prepare different builds for different situations.

Learn more about RIFT here, or check out our game list here.
