Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: Review-in-Progress #1
Quick! Name a major title that launched earlier this week with several issues causing player headaches. If you said "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn", you win a hearty handshake. We begin our review in progress series today with a few early impressions and many thoughts about launch day.

It became very apparent in early access that Square Enix was clearly "not prepared". As of Thursday a few days after release this is still the case. To be clear, A Realm Reborn is vastly superior in many ways to its predecessor and we will cover these improvements going forward in the Review in Progress series. But as much as I, and many other people enjoy the game, some of these missteps by Square Enix are unacceptable and need to be addressed.

Raph Koster on the Past, Present, and Future
As the MMO gaming world moves into its middle aged period of existence, it's refreshing to talk to those who were "there when" and who can offer a unique perspective on the past and the future of online games. We spoke with Raph Koster about all of that and much more in an exclusive interview opportunity.

Star Wars, though, did offer more constraints on us than Ultima did. The Jedi thing was a huge issue, and eventually, IMHO, it killed the game. We shouldn't have had Jedi at all, I think. The fact that we had to have an alpha class in an MMO is right off the bat deeply problematic. Then we basically buried the class, made it nigh impossible to get. When the holocron hints on how to be a Jedi started dropping that first Christmas season, that was really the beginning of the end. Because of the way in which the Jedi system worked, for which I take full blame, you had to master all these different skills. When it was secret, that was one thing. But when it was public, it meant everyone started playing in ways they disliked. Botting skyrocketed. People started to grind. And they started to quit.

Game of the Week
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is Square Enix's latest online installment in the legendary Final Fantasy series. Players enter the land of Hydaelyn to adventure in the regions of Eorzea, and can switch between four distinct classes and 18 sub-specializations by equipping different weapons.

The PC game was originally released in September of 2010, but was brought back into development for a full overhaul and will relaunch alongside the PS3 version in 2013.
