I recently purchased an ASUS N76VZ a few days back. It is laptop that uses the nvidia optimus technology. The laptop has 2 graphical adapters one a Nvdia Geforce GT 650M and the other intel HD graphics 4000. The laptop is using a windows 7 home premium 64 bit and has 8 gb RAM and i7 3610QM processor.
The problem started when my son tried to run League of Legends ,Dungeons and Dragons and Dead Island. The games would crash and this was the event viewer.

So I tried using the Nvidia control panel and setting the graphics to use the Geforce card but the problem kept happening. So when I used the default graphic processer overrride option which you can do when launching the game itself it just went black and had to be shut down via the task manager however the earlier nvd3dum.dll problem did not occur.
I tried the 304.79 driver and the latest 306.02 driver and both had the same problems. I am wondering if my card is defective. Games however work on the hd intel card but obviously I want to use the Geforce GT 650M card. I have sent it to the shop and they have sent it back to ASUS. Any chance this is a software problem and they are going to send it back with a sorry it sucks to be you message.
Its most likely a software issues since its a nVidia driver.
So wait for another driver to solve the problem but it cannot be it as there are videos on youtube showing the card working with games like prototype 2. I cannot even get it to run League of Legends let alone a more graphically intensive one. The initial driver when I tried reformatting was the one windows put in also did not work with the games. It was 295.73. I tried the other two drivers when that did not work.
Its says it right in the description. The problem is nvd3dum.dll . Most likely a faulty driver. My suggestion is to do a clean driver install. Its detailed here. http://www.venarc.com/blog/proper-way-install-nvidia-drivers
Also you might need special drivers if this is an optimus laptop because it needs to support both intel and nVidia video drivers, and it needs to swap properly when you play a game. I would download the drivers straight from ASUS and not from nVidia due to the special circumstances of the video setup. http://usa.asus.com/Notebooks/Multimedia_Entertainment/N76VZ/#download
Yes the intel driver I got from there but I did not get the Nvidia driver from there too thinking Nvidia site would have better. Okay I will try that.
I agree also that the initial problem was the nvd3dum.dll was a driver problem but when I overode the set graphics driver that was not the cause of the game failing. There was no error report on that as the game froze and had to be shut down from the task manager. Also that faulty module path does not exist as that file does not exist in the path they mentioned in the event viewer which was another starnge thing. However on checking my own computer I saw that there is no nvd3dum.dll file but there is a nvd3dumx.dll which both the laptop and my desktop has.
Anyway thank you again you have given me an idea to help solve this issue.
It was according to ASUS a defective laptop but they cannot replace the exact one because they do not have 750gb hard drive version .So I am stuck with having to pay the extra to get the replacement with a 1.5TB hard drive version which will be arriving end of this month. As my nasty luck would have it they have revised their prices too.
I know these sort of things can happen with a computer as it has so many parts that can be defective but damn I am mad especially when I was patting myself on the back for getting the earleir one at that price. Should have known my luck was too good to hold. I am now praying the replacement works well.
If its ASUS, I would take their word on it. Their tech support does not get anything extra by making you pay for extras, and ASUS usually avoids crap since they have a huge title on their back to maintain as the best PC hardware manufacturer.
I think they are on the level it is just that I am so mad I ended up paying far more than I intended. Thank goodness my husband is not berating me for this. I did all the research to get this laptop and was so pleased at the price of 1073 euros but now I am paying 1310 euro so you can imagine my chagrin that the revised prices have taken the air out of my baloon so to speak. Well at least it was defective and I am not saddled with it now and hopefully the coming one will be good . My son starts uni in October.
