Is Xyson worth dropping the $40 on plus $15/month fee? I don't mind paying the fee to play the game but I'm hesitant to drop the initial $40 without being able to try the game first. Not many games don't offer some kind of free trial first and the website doesn't tell you a whole lot...

If you are concerned about the price then no I would not. I bought it and played it for a few months, it was entertaining for that time, but development was slow and the feature-list was barely implemented so lacks sustaining entertainment. The price is really high for an indie MMO, and I'm still not entirely sure why.
The game has seen major improvements. They are about to implement totem decay to clear out the land . There have been many improvements to crafting, and new recipes have been added. My tribe has recently reurned and we are having a lot of fun. This is the best terraforming sandbox mmo in my opinion. The combat system has been made into a mount and blade system which is very fun. The developers claim they have found the source of the lag, and when corrected the server will be running at 15% during maximum load. Most of us left because of lag, but I have been having a great time since I've come back. If you are interested in joining a well established, and friendly Tribe send me a PM.

Well I left because of the lack of item decay, no way to attack/destroy totems, no meaningful use to having walls/fences for your tribe, comfort unimplemented (so fire was useless), overabundance of resources after people QQing about junk plies, no meaningful skill cap/ skill decay (people were maxxing everything and playing solo).
Don't get me wrong, Xsyon still has a place in my heart, but there were a lot more issues than just lag that sent people packing. I for one never did ask for a refund so I still have an account, its just inactive.
