Its not being relegated to a subforum, its having a place where we can discuss sandbox stuff without all the drama. It could just be a regular forum in general discussion and not a subforum under the pub. Its not like we would no longer be allowed to discuss sandbox stuff in the pub.

I wouldn't mind that, but the MODs here tend to pull the trigger on this. And once it's set up, then we have to hope that whoever's in charge in the future still considers it the way we want it. And keep in mind that this site depends on advertising, and the big Themepark makers may decide to push the issue through advertising revenues. Or whatever they pay with for those great reviews. (And I do know that it's insider/info favors rather than money.)

As opposed to die hard sandbox fans going in and derailing theme park game forums?

All you are going to do is get people going in and doing the same thing that you see in other forums.

And there are people, like myself, who like both games and who have no issues going from one type to another. The issue is not such that creating subforums will help. The issue is the derailing of conversations.

The mods can crash any themepark derails with bans. Or appoint sandbox specific community moderators like quizzical or something to delete posts. I don't post in any game forums and I'm sure plenty of others don't either.

Also if they tried it and it didn't work out, they could just close it.

I wonder who voted no, not to trash them but just because I don't think there are any negative effects of this so I can't think of a reason not to do it.

Sean, I think that as we have seen with the term mmorpg itself lots of people have different beliefs about different jargon. I think we could make some stickies for common topics like, what is a sandbox. Then all those posts would be contained within that thread. Well to some degree.

I wouldn't really call GTA a sandbox, but I can understand why some people would.

I think we could have a really interesting discussion with only self identified sandboxers on what constitutes a sandbox. I am somewhat concerned that certain people would butt into the sandbox forums with the intention of trolling though I won't name any names. I think it would be really interesting to have, in either the open sandbox forum or some special sub forums, moderated communities. So we could vote out people who looked like trolls or something, but I suspect mmorpg.com staff would not agree to that, and its pretty understandable that they wouldn't.

I voted no. A sandbox trademark is being able to handle challenging PVP. If you can't handle yourself in open forum PVP you shouldn't try to wear the moniker.

Being able to handle it is not the same as thinking its a useful use of time. Its boring, goes nowhere, the arguments rarely change. If I wanna do nothing I would go argue with jesusfreaks.

That's sort of Cavemannish, isn't it?

So can we get a staff answer on the possibility of this happening? It seems like a pretty good majority of people who didn't vote the third option want to have it.

Is there some number of votes and % of yes votes that are needed or does a poll influence the decision at all?

Hi there,

We've reviewed the feedback here, but we've ultimately decided against creating a dedicated sandbox forum. There will always be crossover of users with different views in every forum we have, segmenting the community further won't change this, and we aren't going to forbid people who dislike sandboxes from posting in a sandbox forum.

Even further, many users aren't even in full agreement over what exactly makes a sandbox game (just as they aren't with what makes an MMO) and this will create a headache for moderators as they are sure to receive reports along the lines of "Discussion of X game shouldn't be allowed here, it's not a sandbox!"

If you're concerned about threads being derailed, well, I have good news for you: topic hijacking is against our Rules of Conduct! If your thread topic is being hijacked by someone else, report the post and we'll take a look at it.

Thanks for your feedback and for taking the time to arrange the poll!

I don't think there really is enough of sandboxes right now to make a sub forum for them. That might change later.

Right now I rather see a CORPG subforum for games like Vindictus, GW, DDO, D3 and similar games, they are getting numerous.

We have specific game forums for all of these games, they can be discussed there.

Then doesn't that solve the issue stated in the original post?

The mods can crash any sandbox derails with bans.

So it's not necessary.

Whatever, I'm not really interested in having the same back and forth with the same people everytime I talk about sandboxes. Pretty much all the threads go through the same cycle and its tiring. As I said, if I wanted to have a tedious discussion like that I could just argue about religion or something.

That's the reason there are moderated atheist forums and feminist forums and all sorts of other things like that.

And we have giant arguments on atheist forums about whether you should be an agnostic atheist or an antitheist or a strong atheist or a week atheist and whether atheism should have any goals besides not believing in god or its own moral code and all sorts of other things. Its still more productive than talking about atheism on a non atheist only forum by a factor of 100.

You don't have to go through the atheism 101 or 201 you can skip straight to the interesting stuff which you couldn't do if you had general access for religious people.

The sandbox forum could avoid discussions like this in every god damn thread:

WoW proves themeparks are better

WoW's success has nothing to do with marketing

We could avoid talking about CORPGs

Etc.

It doesn't even matter if they were true, repeating them over and over and having no one change their mind is a waste of time.

Its your decision to make, but I think keeping it all together isn't the best idea. I guess its time to move on to another forum where there is the chance to get into more interesting stuff.

Even Gamedev which deals with all games and not just mmorpgs is more useful than this place for staying on topic about sandboxes.

Anyways, have fun.
