I've played it several times over the years, most recently about a week ago.  Everything in the game is just meh.

Combat is ok, but slow, so to me it doesn't feel exciting at all.

Classes are decent, I like the bard.

Graphics over all are ok, environment is great, characters are ugly.

Animations are ok.

Housing is ok, yes you can build it and it's in the world which is good, but you are so limited in your selections.  Heck even EQ2 with it's brick and board housing is now better IMO.

Diplomacy is just boring to me.

And lag lag lag, every few minutes getting 9999 ping.  And bugs, as someone else stated venders listing things for millions, minute long loads crossing chunks, sometimes your mount doesn't show up, swimming and hitting the bank and going through the bank, parts of the land not showing up so you fall through the world.

And this was last week.

The game has many things I like, decent classes (I would prefer no classes), housing, and flight.  But it seems as if they just reached a point of good enough on each one, instead of great.

I'll stick with my games, VG is just... ok.  It doesn't stand out in anyway IMO.

This doesn't sound like much has changed since I left the game about 3 months after it launched.... so that alone would be enough not to return.  (I hated falling through the world)

Coupled with the fact that the faction vs faction rule set server that I was on is no longer around, I can't see any reason to return.

If we're not fighting to control something, what's the point?

Personally I find the game boring.  When it went F2P I gave it try.  By level 6 I was bored, logged off, and haven't logged back in since.  Game just doesnt do anything for me.  The sky and weather are very nice.  Everything else to me is just bland.  From the character models to animations.  I found the combat to be sleep inducing at best.  I thought about exploring for a bit, but then when I look around, the landscape itself just seems so "meh" at best.  Personally I don't think FFXIV is a good game as it is currently, but IMHO it's still alot better then Vanguard is. At least in the area's that interest me. (Combat, Animations, Character Models, Landscape/Terrain)

Seems you never got to "the good stuff". Nor did you try the other two spheres of play. Not that that is unexpected, just a shame that you never tried the crafting, which is one of the best systems in the genre, nor the diplomacy. Nor did you do any of the big dungeons or get into the complexities of combat (which begin at level 10).

But I can understand why most wouldn't want to give a game more than a few hours if it doesn't hook them. Just saying that you never gave it a fair shake. Judging a game world as large as Vanguard's based on one starting area? There are over 30 starting areas, and each continent is larger than most MMO game worlds.

And that's more or less what people keep telling me.   A movie starting out slow is ok.   I can live with that.  A book starting out slow and building up to something fantastic.  I can live with that.  A game though, I'm sorry I need you to hook me from the start.  Playing through 10, 20, 30 hours of stuff I find boring to get to stuff that maybe, just maybe I might find interesting.  IMHO is the making of a bad game.  You don't have to put all your cards on the table right from the start.   Sitting there with your cards close to your chest, with your best poker face isn't going to help.

I will give the game credit for:

Beautiful Skybox

Beautiful Weather

The amount of Classes

The amount of Races (even though some seem copy pasted)

Multiple starting zones

While I do find those things nice.  They just aren't hooks for me.  I make no secret that I do not think GW2 is half as good as people proclaim it to be.  Yet it managed to get it's foot in the door just by having a very unique (Not original but unique as far as MMO's go) artstyle for the scenes during the opening.  Much like the other MMO's I play.  FFXIV bad game in it's current state, but amazing graphically, and hands down has by far the best Character Models and Animation of any MMO out now. TSW the modern setting, the twist on quest, and 3 faction pvp which honestly isn't the greatest but fun. Tera got marks for its combat, which hooked me from start, plus it has character models and animations that while not IMHO as good as FFXIV's are fighting with AoC for 2nd place.  There are a few other MMO's I play as well as those I just talked about, but I think I've said way too much already.

Unsupported, buggy game with a miniscule population that still runs poorly to this day.

That's enough of a reason for me.

The game has a full dev team again, its getting weekly patches, it hasn't been buggy for years, and it ran well on my 8 year old machine that could barely run Oblivion.

lol - all they did so far was install new splash screens during load-up! It is IMPOSSIBLE to play for more than an hour without encountering some bug, from npc vendors that list prices in the trillions of copper to grouping with 1/2 the group not sholwing in the group list to being booted to the character screen whenever more than 30 people enter a 'chunk' ... etc

Hm, funny, because there are pages upon pages of patch notes saying otherwise... and I guess I've done the impossible by not finding a bug. Keep on trollin though.

Trolling .... that's funny and it is the exact same thing the vg 'community' spouts off with whenever someone in-game has something to say about the lag, bugs or crashes. Guess after 5 years(?) of saying it over and over it's proven to be an effective way of trying to shut people up.

i have an opinion and after forking over $39.95 for the game and months of subscription fees attempting to make it 'fun' and then putting in the time to give VG another chance when it went f2p, I am entitled to express my opinion without the personal attact tyvm. I have not read the patch notes. Just played the game 3 years ago and again now. Obviously, one of us must be lying about the bugs and crashes.

I do not play for a couple of reasons. I don't care for the game looks, honestly I like World Of Warcraft's looks more. That's preference. I understand a lot of people don't like it. I really do not care for Sony Online Entertainment. My hands are full playing WoW, Guild Wars 2, and Diablo 3. I also play console games.

The graphics is not worse that WoW for instance and looking at the Unofficial trailer on youtube that someone on these forums posted the link to, the game looks to be much more like what a lot of people on these forums want.

So, why are you not playing it?

Sometimes I think no game will ever satisfy us MMOers on these forums. Or we all play WoW secretly ;)

Well for one GW2 is released and the other is the combat is so slow its like when I swing my sword it feels like its in zero gravity and is unrealistic as can be.  Other then that the game looks good and has alot of nice features, if they were to ever speed the combat and animations up 10 fold I might give it a shot again.

I was initially excited at the prospect of playing VG again but I tried coming back after it went f2p and I discovered that I just couldn't get into it anymore. It's probably a combination of things: the slow pace of combat, the amount of time wasted travelling from point a to point b, the lackluster quests and the lack of people to do things with (even with the population boost). I'm honestly a bit disappointed, because I was looking forward to playing.

Because it doesn't have PvP (yet/again). That is the only reason I haven't logged into the new F2P version yet.

You clearly haven't been on the VG forums.

What the above person said WAS straight up trolling though. He is factually wrong in saying that that was all that's been added to the game.

SOE had an opportunity to achieve a revival with f2p, but it made the mistake of not really going f2p. After that, I just decided to stop wasting my time.

Performance is also another issue for me.

I am playing Vanguard. Did F2P until about lvl 28 on my guy, then subbed today. Very fun for the type of game it is...and the community is top notch. I anticipate the most fun I've had in a PVE mmo since EQ1 back when EQ1 was still damn good.

I'm playing Vanguard on Halgar. But stuck on the isle, since it is really hard to find groups (free to player). Will probably remake as a solo class, that is able to solo the island. Hopefully the mainland is better.

Said it before VG is the best game to come out since EQ2.I am talking overall build, that means textures, view distance, overall quality.

The reason i quit early on was cheating ,a poor community ,a few quirky nuances i didn't like example aggro was done ridiculous.

I have learned a lot about gamers moving from game to game and VG added anotehr chpater in how odd many of these gamers are.

You ask for help to do something the chat is total silence. Then suddenly spam starts,.....WTS ....WTB....WTS.Is that what i want to see in chat a /shout /spam auction house? It turned me off bigtime.Early on crafting was a huge rush, you have to get into it fast and get your wares out fast to make a profit.Well certain cheats were using RMT to buy rares and flood the market faster than anyone else.By time i got my better stuff to auction the price was almost a break even proposition,so i was putting in  time for nothing.

Then th eaggro system turned me off, i hate all threse games and their auto distance aggro.I came from FFXI and there was depth and some intrigue with aggro as it involved sight [real sight, not auto distance],sound aggro and scent and magic aggro. It gave some unique realism to the creatures you encounter, instead of everything reacting the same.

Last but least, with the community seemingly wanting to solo and spam chat ,rather than group,i lost total interest.Yo usee coming from FFXI ,it was ALL abotu grouping and players working together.

I guess this last point is the same reason i find all these other games so poorly designed. It seems everyone wants PVP,they rather compete EGOS against each other, rather than HELP each other. That is not my definition of fun game play.

I am certain that i hit VG at the wrong time, early on it is always players racing to get ahead and do it solo, they don't look to group wioth anyone just yet.Yes i did have groups of course, but one person would complain of some ridiculously minor problem and logout of the game.It was like players were looking for an excuse to get back to WOW.

I tried to get into it again when it went f2p but the graphics REALLY felt dated. That's kind of funny since I don't consider myself a graphics guy but this really seemed old.

I think LOTRO is a more complete game from graphics to polish. VG had potential but its obvious with only 2 servers left the game doent have much time.

Personally i find the graphics good , what i do NOT like is ...well SOE. Zero support of the game , a month passed since f2p started , not to mention the years the game was dead.

It's plenty of time to fix atleast few of the zillions of bugs in there.

No to mention the lag ... oh the lag! It's mostly unplayable from Europe.

The game has potential but ...R.I.P VG.
