  • Daybreak’s Got a Brand New Bag

Ok, that’s probably not our best title, but we’re running with it. H1Z1: Just Survive is now titled just Just Survive, as it’s breaking free from King of the Kill, and running off into its own zombie filled world with its own lore and own mechanics. The Daybreak Games team has been hard at work since October of 2016 overhauling most everything. The result is a game that is recognizable to its original release, but far more polished and playable today.

  • Just Survive Isn't (Un)Dead

H1Z1 used to be one game, but it split into two over the course of development - the competitive flavored King of the Kill, and the MMORPG survival Just Survive. The latter has been slow in receiving updates, leading some to believe it was forgotten. Now it has a new game director and big plans for the next year. We chat with Daybreak's Ben Jones about the silence and upcoming plans.

  • What’s the Deal with Early Access?

We’ve all seen the glut of games that are begging for your money in the guise of early access but where did they come from? Rob tries to tackle that topic this week.

  • Daybreak Reveals More About Splitting the Game in Two

Daybreak Game Company caught much of the H1Z1 community off guard with yesterday's announcement that the game would be splitting into two different versions, H1Z1: Just Survive and H1Z1: King of the Kill. We had the chance to submit a few questions to the team to get more of the particulars behind the decision and about what players can expect.

  • The Top 7 Best MMOs of 2015…So Far

I’m not going to lie to you: 2015 hasn’t exactly been full of big moments of big announcements. Maybe it’s because all of the best ideas are already taken, maybe it’s because everyone likes different things, or maybe it’s because developers and publishers are getting lazy, but there’s no denying the fact that the MMO genre has seen better years. From a lack of real excitement or hype around releases, to a lack of innovation, it’s not like it used to be.

  • 5 MMOs That Would Be Perfect for Consoles

Today’s MMO market isn’t what it used to be. A little less than a decade ago everyone was playing the same handful of games and there wasn’t much MMO-hopping going on. Free-to-play was all but nonexistent and unless you paid a subscription for a PC MMORPG, you weren’t playing much in the way of persistent online games. Nowadays, you can boot up an MMO on everything from your smartphone and PC to consoles and tablets. They’re everywhere.

  • My 2015 Year To Date MMOG Power Rankings

Does anyone actually know how many MMOGs are out there now? I certainly don't. Indeed, the category has grown so much that I can no longer even estimate the total number with any real confidence. Many are, of course, not very prominent. Others are a lot more visible and fare far better in terms of attracting and holding our attention. This is my completely personal, subjective ranking of the titles that have had the most interest value for me so far this year.

  • Early Access and the Airdrop Madness

Last night was a bit depressing. After HiveLeader’s excellent first impressions and livestream video, I was pretty excited for H1Z1. Even knowing how Early Access goes and how alpha builds get wiped and are pretty buggy messes, I’ll admit that the thought of a PVE sandbox zombie survival MMO has my interest piqued.

  • What’s Next for H1Z1?

When some of PlanetSide 2’s best and brightest developers stepped away from the game several months ago to work on a new secret project, you sort of knew something special had to be in the pipe. It wasn’t long before we found out that it was SOE’s new survival horror MMO, H1Z1. No, it’s not a game about rampaging STDs, but rather a game about shambling zombies.

  • Color Me Optimistic

When I first watched the stream where John Smedley, President SOE, announced H1Z1 I was more than a little concerned in the direction the development of the game would take. After my meeting with Adam Clegg, one of the developers working on H1Z1, to discuss development on the Survival Horror MMORPG I have started to believe this game can do well in the genre.

  • Exclusive Interview with Adam Clegg and Jimmy Whisenhunt

We all know SOE is a huge company with tons of MMO experience. For a company like that to not have a scalable system in place for quickly handling unexpected numbers of players on the launch of a new IP after all these years is really mind-blowing. That’s why I went hunting for someone to crucify at PAX South earlier today.

  • It's Us Against Zombies

Senior Designer Jimmy Whisenhunt was pretty sure about what he wanted for SOE's upcoming Zombie apocalypse survival MMO, H1Z1. “It’s got to make sense,” he said, “the game design has to be accessible and logical.”

  • Making Weather a True Part of the Game

In most MMOs, weather is just a novelty. It adds some ambiance to the world and makes a zone seem more lifelike. That’s not going to be the case with SOE’s zombie survival MMORPG H1Z1 (also known as Hizzy). I had the chance to sit down and chat with Senior Designer Jimmy Wisenhunt and Graphics Programmer Ryan Favale to talk about how weather in their game won’t be just a setpiece, but a part of the survival and gameplay in H1Z1.

  • Chatting All Things ‘Hizzy’ with Jimmy Whisenhunt

When SOE finally unveiled H1Z1, it was easy to simply pass it off as ‘DayZ the MMO’, but there’s more to this zombie apocalypse MMO than meets the eye. We recently had a chance to chat all things ‘Hizzy’ (as SOE calls it internally) with the game’s senior designer, Jimmy Whisenhunt.

  • The Best of E3 2014 Awards

It’s that time again, folks - the time of year where E3 has come and gone and we meaninglessly list out our favorite games from the show. Okay, it’s not entirely meaningless. E3 is one of the biggest events in gaming and it’s a great place to get a first look and first hands-on with some of the year’s best and brightest titles. So without further ado, here are MMORPG.com’s Best of E3 2014 Awards.

  • SOE’s H1Z1 and the Self-Inflicted Wound

If SOE had simply said, “Hey. We’ve got this really cool feature in airdrops. These are our plans. What do you think?” the message it eventually got would have been loud and clear and the crisis would have been averted.

With a combination of elements from several different existing conventions, zombie survival games have worked out their own niche that continues to rise in popularity. • My 2015 MMOG Wish List

It has been many years since I last sat on Santa's knee or wrote a letter to make sure he'd know what gifts I wanted him to bring. Although I'm not inclined to do either ever again, I haven't forgotten the seasonal tradition of listing my wishes. This year, as usual, I can enumerate quite a few things I'd like to see within the MMOG category. There are far too many to consider discussing them all, so I decided to limit myself to a manageable selection.

  • How a Timely Video Can Make or Break a Game

With Wednesday’s news about the layoffs at Daybreak Game Company (formerly SOE), including Dave Georgeson and Linda Brasse, we started thinking. There could be any number of reasons those two were let go, but being some of the highest profile members of SOE’s staff causes alarm. We were reminded of SOE Live just this past year, the bits of EverQuest Next info we were given… and why it just wasn’t enough for the press or the fans.
