Turbine's MMO's - both DDO and LOTRO - offer a non-subscription payment model where you can pay high up-front costs now but zero recurring fees as you continue to re-play the content.  Thus, the really impressive numbers right as each game launched, but also a predictable trail-off.

As players only pay when new content is released, Turbine only gets paid as fast as they can make new content.  This is hopefully a manageable deal for DDO, which produces short chunks of repeatable content frequently.  It's structurally unsound for LOTRO, which is putting out one expansion (often available on sale for half or more off if you're patient) and one content patch per year.

As a consumer I want to root for them, because their model is as friendly as they come, but I'm finding it harder and harder to be optimistic.
