DC Universe Online: Jim Lee Interview

Recently, MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh sat in on a Q&A panel with popular comic book artist Jim Lee to talk about his role in SOE's upcoming DC Universe Online.

Interviews By Carolyn Koh on August 10, 2009

Jim Lee and Marv Wolfman need no introduction to the DC Universe aficionado, but then many of us often read the stories without thought of the creators of the narrative and art. So, who are they? In the simplest of terms, Jim Lee is a graphic artist and Marv Wolfman is a writer.

Jim Lee is a comic book artist that first gained popularity while working for Marvel Comics on titles like: "Alpha Flight," and "Punisher: War Journal." He then went on to form Image comics with six other artists - his part of the collaborative being Wildstorm Studios. He sold that to DC Comics in 1998 but runs it as a separate entity under the DC Comics Banner. Currently, he acts as the Creative Director for DC Universe Online.

Question:

What is it like working on games?

Jim Lee:

I've been working on games for four years. But in terms of an MMO, it's hard work! I never had to think what various neighborhoods in Gotham would look like. I've learned more about the DC Universe than I ever knew.

Question:

Have you played an MMO?

Jim Lee:

I always get asked that question. Yes, some UO, but I was crazy about EQ. I played that hardcore for a year and a half. (Jim was the first Paladin on his server to acquire the ultimate Paladin weapon, Soulfire.)

Question:

What was it like to work in animation?

Jim Lee:

Animating assets was a learning experience, but even in drawing, I often would pose and look at myself in a mirror to see the interplay of muscles. I was actually filming myself to see how I moved.

Question:

What is your favorite character in game and what would you play?

Jim Lee:

That would be Hush. All DC villains have a weird element to them and I like the bandages. I'll be playing a Villain in game. I've been writing the hero story all my life want to see the villain story.

Question:

Do you feel nervous at all about having to draw all these characters?

Jim Lee:

I used to, but don't anymore. When I first drew Batman, I was worried. Then the issue sold well and the readers liked it. The first time I drew Doomsday was for the game. I think he turned out rather well. So no, I don't.
