City of Heroes / Villains: "Inventing Wings" by Character Artist, Jay Doherty

Jay Doherty is a Character artist who is currently working on Cryptic Studios' City of Heroes / City of Villains. Today, he writes this developer journal about designing the costume piece wings that are available in the game.

Hey, I'm Jay Doherty, and I am a character artist for City of Heroes. One of my specialties is inventing wings for City of Heroes and Villains, and I am here to tell you how it all goes down.

With each new content update that has come out over the recent years, I always saw players making their own threads on costume pieces what they wanted, so I decided to start a thread on the City of Heroes several months back asking players what they most wanted. Within about two weeks 10,000 requests were made. So I started chipping away at the ever-growing requests. Obviously one of the cool aspects of City of Heroes is the ability for characters to fly, and not surprisingly one of the biggest requests was that players wanted wings. So wings are what they got.

It's safe to say that wings are one of the most difficult player costume pieces to make for the game. There are two basic "rigs" for the wings which we call internally "Bat" and "Eagle." Depending on the wing; the proper rig will be used. When designing our new wings, I had to make sure that every wing looks good both in its flying state and resting state (You will not understand the giant pain in the butt it is to do that). The hardest wing to make was the Angel, just because it was the first one I made (we introduced Angel and Demon wings first as part of our Veteran Rewards program). One of the coolest things about being a character artist is making sure everything looks tight and I wanted to make sure that every wing looked different from far away and close up; so to achieve that I tried giving every wing a distinctive Silhouette.

So as I mentioned already, the first two wings that I designed were the Angel and Demon wings. The higher-ups really liked how I and the animation team implemented them so they beat me until they got some more. So to date we have created ten wing sets: Angel, Demon, Dragon, Burned, Bone, Bat, Cherub, Insect, Tech, and Fairy. Here was my thought process on each of the different wings.

I wanted the Angel wings to be very natural and bird like. The Demon wings had to be elegant, sharp, and vampire-like, whereas the Dragon wings had to be big, bulky and tough looking. The Burned wings are supposed to be for undead and monstrous characters, but just in case they aren't undead enough for some players, I made the Bone wings. The Bat and Cherub wings aren't supposed to be real world practical; they are more a cutesy accessory. The Insect wings turned out pretty bad-ass because our animators made them look like real buzzing wings. Why a robot would need wings is beyond me, but the people wanted them so they got Tech wings. Oh, and I made the Fairy wings for all the really good little girls out there in CoH land.

And what better way to give these new wing sets to our players than through our new Invention system! So if you want to look cool and be the hip guy or gal on the block, get out there and start inventing. Enjoy!

I'm looking forward to Tech wings, myself.  I'm not holdig my breath on easily obtaining them as they're likely going to be hot items on the auction house.

I just have a question about the new wings. I know you can invent them but can you invent them even if you don't have the 15 month badge? I don't have the 15 month badge yet and I just wanted to know if you have to be playing for 15 months before you can make the wings or you can make them right when Issue 9 comes out?

Inventable wings do not require the veteran reward. The Veteran Reward Wings were intended as a preview of the larger range of wings thats coming in Issue Nine. Of course, the drop rate for the recipe needed to make the wings is very, very, low, so don't get too excited about these.

But with the cross-server auction houses, i don't think it'll be that hard to get some of the new wings.

Nice preview of the new wings, i cant wait to get some tech-wings for some of my bots :D

Now we just need the fame-system!

They Listen? HAHA! If they Listen, Rather then bull craping around with costume stuff, they would  install lvl 50 unlockable epic toons for cov by now and IOP's "Items of power" already.... these 2 things alone people have been crying for months now!! at least a year or so.. i just stop playing cox about 2 months ago because i  was tired of waiting for them, thats after playing for 2 years off and on...

So, anyone else notice that the undead guy with the bone wings has what appears to be a Statesman Helmet?

This is an interesting article on 'dev' development. I actually enjoy reading little snips from artists, programmers, producers, and developers on their internal processes. It's sick I know, but it really gives the playerbase a feeling that they don't sit around all day drinking coffee until the bell whistles.

I liked the art concept photos as well. Overall a high rating on this article.

BTW, we made wings by the dozens in SL 3 years ago!

Nope still no real items, still only enhancements.

But in the upcoming issue 9, there will be salvage and recipes for crafting new costume parts, temp-powers and Invention orgin enhancements. There will also be an cross-server Auction house , where you can sell your enhancements and recipes.

Only problem with wings is that they are so awesome, that all my characters without them now look drab by comparison.  I have only two characters that wings worked for thematically, and they are lots of fun to see move around.  I keep trying to think of story reasons to give all my other characters a pair, just because they are so well-done.

Although i must admit the wings are well done when moving, i find it too stiff when your just standing there... even when your just walking or running, the wings are too stagnant, it needs to animate, during idle poses and walk cycles as secondary animation to truly complete the wings

The only time wings animate is when your off the ground, by either jumping or flying ... otherwise your stuck with this cardboard thing on your back that cant even pose itself along with the rest of the appendages. Consider and observe the toon when hes just standing there. Random animations of stance shifting and arm folding happens... you could at least allow the wings to stretch themselves on their own or let it flutter a bit...

Also perhaps you could fold the wings more compact if your going to make it so stiff.. a smaller folded state of the wings that doesnt take up too much , i mean really fold it and tuck it in ... otherwise please give the wings some animation during the toons idle and walk times.
