Voyage Century Q&A with Daniel Lin
Staff Writer Carolyn Koh took the opportunity to talk to Daniel Lin, the Manager of Overseas Marketing for Voyage Century, about the upcoming Pirate-MMO from IGG.
| MMORPG.com: | We understand that Voyage Century is a 3D Nautical MMORPG set in the 15th to 18th century. Is it geographically contained or does it span the world? |
| Daniel Lin: | Voyage Century combine the information about the history and geography relating to the voyage in the century of 15--18 and form a side of history spanning 300 years. Voyage Century will make the players feel the real geography and create all kinds of histories in the game. There are two spatial proportions: real proportion of the city scene and the sea battle. Furthermore, the sea map in the earth which is minimized by the virtual time in the game. |
| MMORPG.com: | What aspects of their characters do players select when they create their characters? Is appearance customization available? |
| Daniel Lin: | Players could choose the character they would like to be when they enter the game. The differences between the characters are face, hair style, ability, nationality and profession, which players could choose. The game offers the large freedom to choose and develop for the players. |
| MMORPG.com: | What are the types of game play are available to players? Do you feel that all of them are viable character paths for players to take? |
| Daniel Lin: | There are three different types for the character development: skill level, ship level and rank of the nobility, which are got form different way to increase the experience. The skills leveled up by practicing and finishing the task relating to the skills. There is no upper limit for it at present. Yes, believe me, they are all viable character paths for player whatever you choose merchant, craftsman or pirate. |
| MMORPG.com: | How will players advance in Voyage Century? Can they select a specific path to gain honor and reputation in? |
| Daniel Lin: | Well, players who want to be an advance person in Voyage Century just extends more their skills, so they can see more anther players can't see. Also, for gain honor and reputation, it doesn't get a specific way except complete more high level tasks, explore new lands, find rare species and cumulate battle experience. |
| MMORPG.com: | Can players choose to learn any and all skills if they wish and is there a possibility of excelling in all skills available? |
| Daniel Lin: | Skill ability is effective for the character's level, it also influences other characters. If you want to learn more skills, you need to reach higher learning condition. There is no level limit for the character itself, and that refers to professional skills. |
| MMORPG.com: | What starter equipment will players have? Will they have a boat to start off with? |
| Daniel Lin: | The novice will get a ship and four cannons of elementary level by talking to the NPC Mysterious Captain. He will tell you the requirement to sail off. After buying the necessary provision, you will be able to sail off. |
| MMORPG.com: | Will various languages be a skill that players need to learn to converse with the NPCs in various cities of the world? |
| Daniel Lin: | No. English is the universal language in Voyage Century, you don’t need to learn any language skill. |
| MMORPG.com: | How will players distinguish themselves? Explain reputation / notoriety in Voyage Century and how it can affect game play for players? |
| Daniel Lin: | Reputation, Noble title and Title are the particular systems of Voyage Century. It not only give your different appellations, but also affects the characters on every aspect in the game, no matter in production or battle, you will differ from other players in your Noble Titles and your Title. In the game, you will boost your reputation by attacking the pirates or identifying the findings. If your character dies, the reputation will decrease. |
| MMORPG.com: | Will players be able to distinguish their characters? That is, by looking at a character in game. Will I be able to tell if he or she is a highly skilled Captain with high skills & much experience? |
| Daniel Lin: | Yes. Players are able to customizing the appearance of their character by choosing different hairstyles, face and etc. We also provide thousands of special finery which will individualize the characters. High-level armors and equipments require high-level skills and experience, so you are able to tell a highly skilled Captain. |
| MMORPG.com: | Will there be large scale events equivalent to "raids" in current MMORPGs? |
| Daniel Lin: | The city battle and port contest in Voyage Century are magnificent events for guilds. |
| MMORPG.com: | Can players control geographical areas such as towns? What are the ramifications for other players? |
| Daniel Lin: | Of course, they can! The strongest guild is able to control the cities in the game. If a guild wants to get the right to control a city, he has to apply to the King for an attacking permission and fight against the guild that defends it. Each week, there will be a battle for the control right over the city. |
| MMORPG.com: | There seems to be a lot of things that players can produce. How will players sell their wares? Will the economy be player controlled or is there some sort of rules that will control the market to some extent? |
| Daniel Lin: | In game, there is a Bourse in each city where you can sell your products. Also, you can exchange them with other players or vend them by setting a booth. The same as in real, the price of the goods will fluctuate accord with the change of supply-demand situation. Under such rules, wise merchant will make rich profit by commanding the updated information. |
| MMORPG.com: | Why do you have two methods of storage in game? What is the difference between the warehouse and the bank besides the storage of silver? |
| Daniel Lin: | This game gets two to make item and silver distinctively. Players only can store sliver in the bank except they purchase Strongbox in the item mall, you also can store more item when you get a strongbox in the bank. |
| MMORPG.com: | Finally, what do you think Voyage Century brings to the MMORPG market? Why would an MMORPG player choose to try out and play Voyage Century? |
| Daniel Lin: | Reality is the largest difference for the Voyage Century comparing to other online games. It will make the players feel the real society and create own histories in the game. There are plenty of aspects worth expecting. The guild activity will be very attractive. In the game, players will taste the feelings of territorial reign and feelings of superiority for we embody largely the interest of the guild war in the game. As I talked about before, this particular MMO focuses on nautical life in 15-18th century, which we realize was a very important period in the West. It will attract the large number of players who have dreamed about sailing voyage from their childhood, plus players excited to play the role of pirates, possibly after being influenced by novels and movies. |
I hope not
I think the game looks very good indeed, cant wait to play it tomorrow. Should be interesting.
Yeah, see what you mean, but point n' click just doesn't do it for me anymore. I want a higher level of UI interaction. Anyway, I'm waiting for PotBS as well.
When I hear the name Voyage Century all I can think about is the repeated spam attempts from them in the forums.
Me either my friend.
But:
* VC looks to be slightly different than most click to move games.
* I'm not playing anything else atm.
* It's Fawking FREEx0r to TRY it.
I gotta at least give it a try if only to make my sig a few words longer... :)
Heres a post the Admin made on Voyage Century forums.
Hahah, same here.
Too funny...I know its alpha, but meh...I didnt like it much.
Has potential, but too much potential is bad. :P
No comment.
Another Korean fodder game, it seems...
Point & Click never bothered me before. I find the graphics acceptable. The ideas and features in the game seem fine, it could be fun. The translation of the game may be questionable. If it's going to be a heavy grind, it's not going to be for me (at least not for very long).
I am all set to try out the game later on today. Is there an NDA for it? It's Open Beta, I think. I'm looking forward to trying it and reading what other have to say about their first impressions.
Pirates of the Burning Sea is still the mmorpg I am anticipating in this type of setting, but the release day is still so far away. Voyage Century could be fun to play until then.
hey if it works for eve..
I quickly uninstalled it.
Yaarrr Der be another piwat MMO a commin...
Between this, and Disney's PotC many elfs will hang up their long bow to plunder the seas, grab spannish ladies, and drink french wine. PotBS surely can use the added interest when many try this, and then move to a more in depth version.
Still good to see companies walking a new path from fantasy though, wish em luck.
Funky.
I think I may hang about for the Burning Sea. That game looks like Pure Awesome In A Boat. This game..........doesn't.
Eh, Its free. Its a time filler. Its something diferent. Oh...and its free.
It will at least fill the MMO itch until something really good comes out.
I can't compare it to POTBS, because I'm not in that beta. Will POTBS be much better? Sure, maybe, but I will say the vast majority of games fail to live up to thier hype and expectations, when they're released. At least VC is out now, and I can judge it for what it is, not what I hope it will be.
Comparing it to other Korean MMOs is way off, though. It's much more of a sandbox type of game, with all sorts of non-combat things to do. Every other Korean MMO that I've tried has been the opposite, nothing but grinding through mob spawns.
VC seems to have way more depth. It's just lacking the polish of a high-budget game.
Granted, it is lacking lots of polish, though. They could add so much, as far as graphics go. More diversity to different cultures, give them each thier own style of ships, more variety of buildings, clothes, etc. Would make the world much more interesting to explore.
And it could all be brought into the 21st century as far as higher res textures and polygon counts go... but of course, then they'd have to charge for it, to afford to do all that.
Disclaimer: All the above is taken from devlogs on the site so in essence all hype.
I can understand that, but it is a matter of preference. There are some things I like about being able to deal with NPCs, especially when it comes to the economy. Ideally, I prefer a middle-ground, where players have some influence, but don't totally create/destroy it. VC has lots of player vendors, like so many other Korean MMOs, but seems to mostly involve dealing with NPCs, and thier predictable prices.
In VC, it does take some skill. Outmaneuvering an opponent can demolish them, because they can't fire unless thier target is in thier cannon's LOS. They also can't ram an elusive opponent, or use grappler weapons, which are very short range. The cannon fire itself is automatic, but getting your target into your side arc, and keeping them there, can be tricky.
Also there's some strategy involved, as far as types of cannons you equip, some being wider arc, some longer range, etc. Some ships can be built for speed to keep out of opponent's range, while sniping them, and that sort of thing. And there are different types of cannon ball, to do extra damage to the sails, the crew, or the hull.
So, my point being, VC isn't your typical click&wait combat, either. I wouldn't say it's "twitch," and skill levels count for a lot, but it is pretty involved.
It is a bit of simplistic fun, but i'll tide over with Navyfield for a quick pointless game...
Let the countdown to PotBS continue
Doesn't "countdown" require some sort of clue as to when the game will be released? :p
I think the big impact VC will have on PoTB will be that once PoTB comes out, it will have to prove it's not just a glossy version of VC. It will have to demonstrate that it really brings something new to the table to justify the monthly subscription and off-the-shelf costs.
I think VC will probably go the way of Navy Field, fun for a bit. people play cuz it's free, but after a while it just gets.....
And many of us hope PotBS is not just some polished version of anything. EVE has held my interest, but i feel it slipping after the Revelations patch. ( Sorry to you who feel it was a pointless mission borefest ) My only real dissapointment in it is the lack of social interaction with characters ( yes i know it's comming soon, so they say
) I have followed Pirates development for over a year now, and it's looking like what I want in a MMO. A player market, balanced in PvP, and non-Pvp, missions, an interresting crafting idea, and the graphics look nice to boot, plus the boats. I mean we all know Pirates trump ninjas, and can make even chuck norris run.
but that's for annother topic..
Seriously though I dont think VC will lose its customer base anytime soon. I think anyone who played Silk Road Online can attest that free games do have lasting player bases. Albeit they can suck.. Alot of people will probably go to Potbs though. My entire guild plans to when the time comes. Though we are divided whether to go to Uncharted Waters Online which may be coming to america...
So, why would I switch over to POTBS? The gameplay will probably be very different, simply because aside from theme, they may not have much in common. Sure, I'll probably switch over to something before too long, but I don't think it'll have anything to do with boats or pirates.
Just saying, doubt I'm alone in that. Not sure there are really all that many VC players waiting for POTBS.
VC is good for what it does in that it gives you a reasonable strategy based form of combat. I mean if you want to take down anyone or anything you have to be able to manage you ship's location, make sure you're not taking too much damage in the process, and are able to make a quick get away if it gets too dicey. And there's no insta-gank like you have with most Korean/Asian brand of MMOs, which is quite refreshing to be honest. I have no clue as to the state of PotBS, but I hope they're looking at VC and recognizing whatever failures it has and to sidestep them in their product which is the lack of ship design. In this case, this is where VC fails, it gives you one class of ship for your given career path [fighter, merchant, explorer, and etc], so you can't have any real specialization in your ship's classification like having a warship that has a more scouting style to it. Or having a merchant ship armed enough to handle raiders. Or an explorer's vessel with some ability to outrun a blockcade. And so on. This is where VC has a weakness, but who knows what they'll introduce in the game itself. Barring that flaw, VC is still quite fun and very easy to get into without getting too attached [which I can't since I find the lack of ship design to be the biggest hurdle for me to even consider this a valid MMO in its current state].
All in all, VC still did good and it gives you a taste of what a pirate based MMO ought to have with respect to the combat system.

I will be playing this game in the next few days, I have hopes that it will satisfy me until the release of POTBS which Will release this Fall or this Summer, haven't checked lately. Also like MANY POTBS fans I played SWG also.
The best thing I can say about POTBS and VC is they are aimed at an older more mature audience. Now if I cuss like in World of Warcraft no one will ask me what the word means. Also I won't have to baby-sit my group which made me mad. For example in WoW I formed a group. a guy asked me to make him leader to invite a friend, I agreed, we got to the final boss of... that one quest in the cave with all the pirates on the boat.... an item dropped. I needed it, but he did also. I rolled for it against the rest of the group, lost but he booted me because I didn't ask permission to roll for it. When I talked to him he explained how since he was the group leader I had to do what ever he said. Then we talked for an hour and I came to the conclusion he was a dictator... :P
(as a note I hear the horde doesn't have so many little kids, don't know if its true or not. Maybe I would of liked it more if I tried horde, in all fairness. Then again killing the kids seems it would be too easy.)
Anyway, I can't wait to try it, even if the gameplay isn't top notch it will still beat most of the MMOs out there simply because all of the kids. I admit every MMO will have some kids, but this genre interests few of the younger ages. I could be wrong, but from all the polls on POTBS half the players will be in their 30-50s. AND since this game is where most POTBS fans will hang out while they wait for POTBS I expect the same.
