ArcheAge Videos: Why the Focus on Questing? (4:30)

ArcheAge is going to be a divisive game... just not for the reasons you might think. We spent some time with the first of several closed beta events for Trion's upcoming North American release of the game, and we're suitably enamored. But there's a sneaking suspicion we all have about ArcheAge: we're afraid that its underlying complexity is going to be hidden by the upfront simplicity of its questing and PVE design. In short, too many people are going to skip this one based on the first couple o

Have to say that this is just what I was hit with, Im not the kinda player that will play for 100 hours to determine if the game is good or not. And after 10h gameplay I was thinking this is just another Quest hub grinder game.

If I dident knew already that the game had much more to offer I would have uninstalled it right away, but with the open world thingy in mind i am gonna give it another beta weekend try again to see if this game is for me,

I like the game and I agree that it would be even better with way fewer quests.

Quest hubs should be no more than a few quests picked up from a board: both kill and craft.

Seems they tried to keep the ! questing to make people feel comfortable and as a tutorial to explore what the game has to offer, but most people will easily pass the game by thinking the simple WoW style questing IS the game...such an enigma. The best part about kill shit quests is that you initiate them by just killing 1 of the things. After you kill X amount of whatever you get the xp/gold by just clicking a button! I love this and feel as if I have to kill every single wildlife I find! Wed Jul 23 2014 8:49PM Report
BillMurphy writes: @Xeno: there are a lot of story quests, with cinematics and all. They're marked as "race" quests, pertaining to your chosen race. Wed Jul 23 2014 8:52PM Report

ArcheAge looks great. I feel Trion is the perfect publisher for this one.

I am on board with making "alternative" features not only more aware to players but also giving them the choice (from the start) to do in replace of your normal quest grind. Starting the game as a sea trader with a dinky little 1 man ship from start and over time working it up to be a huge vessel sounds cool! Without ever lifting a sword.

I put this in my AA survey, letting them know that in the first hour you should be able to start experiencing the sandbox, instead of more quest. Perfect example would be last night I played Trove with my wife. I accidently stayed up till midnight, when I usually goto bed around 10 (11 at the latest) and most of the times it is because I am tire. When I looked at the clock and saw it was 1152, and I was not feeling tired, I was shocked. Every time I logged into AA, I could not fight off that sleepiness, while playing Trove, which has nothing to follow, you just Trove, I never stopped having fun. Thu Jul 24 2014 8:37AM Report
