Game: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Kind of a nice summary of where we are at with this game. I wonder how long we will have to wait now for the important annoucement concerning player controlled space flight... or lack thereof.
Bioware has clearly mastered the art of talking a lot without saying anything useful at all.
Your ship will be an instanced taxi you get to see in cutcenses fly on rails.
Warzones are battlegrounds from WoW. Same rotten fruit with a different name.
I'm shocked he didn't mention voice-overs.
And for all you people saying "it's rough", "It's not finished yet".... Do you think Bioware are idiots? They would not show us anything they are not 100% happy with. I'm sorry what you see is what you get.
Not a fan of everyone standing still and shooting their blasters into each others faces. At least side step and duck, maybe you can't do that while shooting. I suppose the smuggler is only allowed the move and shoot skills.
Nice questions. Though shame so much was answered with thats where we are right now.
One thing that I noticed is that customisation seems to be confused with progression. All MMO's no matter how bad the customisation is have progression in appearance such as WAR. Awful customisation and yet 4 sets of end armour. The armour isn't nearly as important as what the character looks like. Yeah I got one of 4 sets of armour great and the same face as a quarter of the population. Not feeling so unique and special any more.
If the amount of customization isn't to your liking, just play a bounty hunter or trooper. I'm betting before long you'll never see your character's face again.
Well if you have a DVR and Comcast/Xfinity I would suggest recording any rebroadcasting of the G4 channel's Day 1 coverage as they started out with SWToR special coverage. They interviewed a guy from Bioware and show player ships and some live game footage of (I believe) an Inquisitor and Sith Warrior taking on a two legged droid of some sort.
While I agree with the majority that point out this is much of the same "talk and no substance" it seems that some people ignored that this time it's LucasArts giving the run around. Seems some people are quick to call out BioWare without paying attention to what studio the guy said he was from.
Either way it's an okay recap, I just wish they would start changing they (BioWare and LucasArts) way they present information. Personally I think the GuildWars 2 blogs is something that both studios could take a page or two from.
They have no plan for character customization. I think their entire plan has been and remains too narrow. INo space, no meaningfully customizable housing, no character customization that doesn't have something to do with stupid gear grinds. It is scary because they are under the 1 year mark until they have to have a production grade build for this game, and they seem to have no idea what they are going to do outside of this grandious story system. From what most people say in the forums and elsewhere, folks are looking for a single player RPG with chat sessions. They want a world to escape into.
I just hope they havne't painted themselves into a corner with the focus on the stories and Voice Over, and have nothing else to offer.
Coming out of E3 I'm actually less anxious to play the game than before. I really don't look forward to a game full of people who look like storm troopers.
Like others have said Bioware/Lucasarts really do like to have alot of interviews all giving the same answer... nothing. I've been following this game since announcement and as of late it's really starting to disappoint. They're looking to release this game in Spring of 2011? I highly doubt this is possible if they can't show us atleast a little bit of information. Atleast show us a few more playable species, some more detailed PvP information, ANYTHING. They're just leaving us hanging! Every friday they release a little bit of information, but the past 2 fridays it's been BOTE. Fuck the comics, we want the game. I thought E3 was going to reveal alot more than they did, all that was basically announced was our own star ships, and warzones but yet we got no information on them... nothing at all. They really need to start giving more information to their fans if they expect a 2011 release date. I'm not bashing the company, it looks like alot of work but this is like trying to catch a fish with just a hook and no bait... doesn't really work. If they're expecting a spring 2011 release date, i expect some information but with how it's going i don't see them releasing this game atleast until Q4 of 2011 or Q1 of 2012. They're putting alot into this game, and i'd rather wait for it all to be implemented and polished than get it ASAP.
Nice summary. I would rather they keep a tight lid on things and surprise me with new content rather than tell me a wish list of things and watch the majority of them be cut before launch. Similar to what blizz just did with path of the ancients.
Some of you people are just looking to complain for the sake of complaining. If they said "yes you can fly your ships" but then cut the feature or delayed it like most mmos do with their content you would be complaining about that. Or whining that they are not focusing enough on X feature.
Keep up the good work bioware. GIVE ME BETA.....please.
*ouch* LA senior on TOR, (dont mean to moan but c'mon it there in the clip) "We listen to what people want" and later replying on other playable races "no, but we understand thats what people want"
Another word that makes my ears bleed personally is the word "Iconc"
Not allready saying game will be bad or anything BUT since the SWG disaster - 'Star Wars' and the word 'Iconic' should never ever be mentioned together again
Did you just go on about how you want to be surprised, then at the end beg for beta invite? Yeah beta won't have any spoilers lol.
As for mentioning it's not Bioware this time dodgin the bullet, it doesn't really matter because it's generally speaking everyone that has a part in creating SW:TOR talks about the game without really talking about the game.
Q:"So tell us about pvp in SW:TOR and what it will be like."
A:"Yes we know people want pvp and we believe we've created a very star wars feel that is heroic and of course very iconic. The players will enjoy it I think and it's full voiced. Did I mention that already?"
Just an example but I think that might be more information than the devs of SW:TOR give for any response.
Every character feels heroic from the get-go? Every character gets their own star ship? Looks to me like we're going to have a bunch of average "heroes" flying about in space. How exactly will this make you feel heroic if everyone has the same stuff you do? I would rather have starships difficult to obtain... Because it's a freaking starship, you know?
You can always tell who the WoW players are because they're despirately trying to destroy the game before it even comes out. They revealed two ships at E3, however in a recap they did on their Forums just after they implied that there was more than two. If you were paying attention during the interview you would have noticed a shot of space outside the window of one of the ships, which makes me believe that to a degree space travel will not be fast traveled and there might be other things going on.
I will say I am a bit concerned about the armor gig as I really hate it when I'm so bad ass I look just like everyone else around me. Then again they limited info as they tend to do, while they showed complete sets of armor, they didn't say there wasn't other types of armor that you can mix and match, and if you watched anything on the Jedi Classes, you can tell pretty much flat out they do have mix and match gear, none of them ever look the same.
Secondly for Clockimus, I think it'll probably be a more objective based combat. I hate to break it to you, but they didn't show any PvP content so yeah you're assuming that it's a carbon copy already doesn't hold, what they have shown of PvP though in random clips was usually really powerful force based attacks knocking people off really large cliffs to their graves. Even at the worst case senario if it is a WoW rip off, at least it'll be sexy and wont be WoW.
StandStrong I hate to break it to you, but just because you have something doesn't mean you have to show it. I just got out of High School and let me tell you some girls have really nice bodies, and aside from the short skirts and tank tops they're really not going out of their way to show it all. Samething for anyone, if you've got something worth hiding then hide it, besides they reveal interesting things accidentally all the time. The trick to learning about this game isn't listening to the interviews, it's watching their game footage they tease with sometimes, they usually accidentally let something slip or imply something. My particular favorite is still "Oh look the Jedi Master came to us, that means we don't have to go to his ship and get him." Implying if that NPC didn't attack they would have had to board the enemy ship and attack (5 part Teaser on Youtube).
For the people concerened about combat, we have from Bioware that unlike in every other MMO that isn't based around an FPS when your character moves, a player's attacks wont follow (you know like the magical heat seeking arrows in WoW?). That means even though Smugglers specialize in cover and stealth based combat, if you're a trooper and getting fired upon, if you run and duck behind the big rock the blaster shots wont hit you through that rock.
Comstrike, look at their concept Art. Storm Trooper esk gear is only the top high end heavy armor spec. They have everything inbetween from rebellion like armor to regular clothing. The BH stuff is based to make you look like Jango or Boba, the Troopers are based around the Mandalorian Armor design (which the Troopers were also based off of due to the Mandalorian culture for war.)
For regular MMOers who really don't get into story or lore that much this game just seems like a disappointment waiting to happen. But for Nerds who have no lives and our girlfriends moved to Cali (Damn ye California), this game is perfect. I know the history of Star Wars from like the forming of the Force Sensative on Tython to the Death of Jacen Solo and a large amount of the 10,000 years in between. That's who this game appeals to the fans who know this stuff, who knew the Mandalorian designs predated the Clones even, who knew where all this stuff came from. If you don't know that, this might just be a game, but the fourth element they added will be its selling point.
I guess every avatar will need his own planet from level one so he feels 'heroic' enough. I like what I saw, but some of the gameplay decisions are not based on lore or roleplay, starting with a starship is plain silly.
"I guess every avatar will need his own planet from level one so he feels 'heroic' enough."
I agree, and while they're at it why stop? Why don't they make it truly revolutionary and make every player have his own game with personal world story and everything! That would be like totally awesome and never before seen in the history of gaming!
As much as this game will probably be fun to play, it sounds to me as if Bioware still haven't made up their minds about a lot of things in the game. You would have thought by now that they would have nailed down some things at least. But all we hear is "that's all that we can say about that right now" or "we can't talk about that".
first of all gratz to lucasarts and bioware for their progress with the game so far and i hope it gets even better by the time of the release and plz dont release it ASAP but release it when its ready!!
i would like to mention something about the "so everyone feels heroic and stuff" u should consider that in such a large galaxy not everyone would like to be heroes....for example bounty hunters their name only shows that they do stuff for money not to be heroes.....or that some ppl might like to stay "undercover" for all kinds of reasons...what i am trying to say is that u should make the role playing side of the game that u can choose other stuff than just saving the universe or destoying it. and besides if everyone is a hero in this game the heroic aspect isnt going to stand out anymore it will just feel like an other MMORPG where every1 are the chosen ones to save the land etc....
And something else....i hope at warzones and generally that u wont be able to see the lvl of ur enemies (the players ofc) and if possible even the names....that way its going to be a lot better and realistic pvp experience not knowing what ur fighting. an example with lvl should be like : u are lvl 50 and u are at a warzone and u scan the area and u find some1 lets say 25 and ofc u say thats my "meat" but when u dont have the ability to see ur opponents lvl or hp u move more carefully and this also gives the opportunity of low lvl players to assist the high lvl ones at pvp strategically.
I'm starting to get a bit nervous about this game. I really want this to be a great game and I hope to enjoy it for at least a few years, but experience has taught me to be wary when the company isn't very forthcoming with straight up answers.
Some of the questions asked were pretty simple -- i.e., will player ships be useful or cosmetic? I still am not sure what the answer is.
Anywho, I'm watching this one, but I'm not going to get too hyped at this point.
Purely speculation on my part but neither LucasArts or Bioware are vwilling to talk about space or space combat at this time...whos to say they wont at a later date allow you to obtain personal fighters or such and you dock them on this big ship of yours and use the fighters for space pvp and other things.
Definate possibility and not out of the realm of reason right? All we can do is wait and see if they deliver....I can only hope and remain optimistic till they prove otherwise.
Either this is going to be greatest thing since sliced bread or it is going to bomb harder then a Funcom MMO.
The pre-rendered warzone combat looks awesome, but all the in-game footage has none of that fluidity and MMO players, multiple player in fact, are remarkebly reluctant to be cannon fodder. A charging battle, it sounds nice but it is going to be a gigantic case of "you first". There are no heroes in virtual worlds because nobody wants the XP/Item/whatever penalty.
I think that Bioware is biting of more then it can chew. Remember, this is the company that forgot to give a helmet toggle in Dragon Age Origins. EVERY single RPG has people requesting this as they like to show their face. So why did Biowar forgot a feature previous games had?
Because there is a shit load of things to consider and to get right in 30 hour single player game. In a thousand+ hour MMORPG? Forget it.
Take the apperance tab. This has been a LATE addition to most MMORPG's as far as I am aware, but we have come to expect it now, so Bioware is going to look silly if they don't have it.
WoW and such got away with 6 different faces for everyone, but we are going to pissed at Bioware if we don't get Mass Effect style face composition.
Space combat? Yeah, me want but what other game has done both land and space combat? At launch?
And what about gameplay? People are going to demand everything from open PvP to Lotro style story only PvE to a SWG clone and a FPS trading card RTS diplomacy sim.
But what IS IT? I at least still don't have a clue. Yeah, there is going to be story. That is about it. What is the end game going to be REALLY like?
The game is still a long way away but I am more and more getting the feeling that I had when SWG was still in development. "Oh wow, this game is going to be awesome, it has got EVERYTHING".
But I am older now. I know that games that promise to be everything to everyone rarely deliver especially in the MMO genre.
12 months or so till we find out (and I predict massive delays at every stage) but while I hope it will succeed, I have my doubts. It feels more and more like SWG and Kotor with bunny-hopping bounty-hunters to me.
That was a great recap of this weeks events!

Mon Jun 21 2010 7:09AMIs this a 2 parter? Kinda ended fast there nearly in the middle of a question :-p
Mon Jun 21 2010 7:23AMI was told that they use the terms "Star Warsy and Iconic" just to piss off the Disgruntled Vets.
