Starting as Man: Archet
Welcome to Lord of the Rings online! Creating your character could perhaps be the single most important decision you make. As this is the human guide, we will assume that you have already chosen to create a human. LOTRO's humans have the most choices when it comes to class: you can play as a Burglar (debuffer), Captain (buffer/pets), Champion (melee DPS), Guardian (tank), Hunter (ranged DPS), Lore-master (crowd control/pet), and Minstrel (healer).
 
Once you have chosen your race and class, you may customize your character's appearance through head shape, hair style, hair color, eye color, and more. You may also select your area of origin, which dictates your character's skin and hair coloring, and your character's name.
 
After creating your character you will start in an instanced quest area.
 
Intro: Jailbreak
  1. Talk to Amdir.
  2. Watch the scene that unfolds before you. When Amdir charges out the gate, follow him.
  3. To your left is a crate; right click on the crate to open it.
  4. Loot the weapon(s) from the crate.
  5. Open your backpack using the 'i' key.
  6. Equip the weapon(s) by right clicking them in your inventory.
  7. Talk again with Amdir.
  8. Head west through the door and follow the map; you will encounter Blackwold Ruffians and Lackeys (level 1). Kill 4 of these.
  9. There will be two doors: one leading east and one leading north. Enter the north door.
  10. Talk to Celandine Brandybuck.
  11. Head back out and through the east door.
  12. Kill Edric Blackwood.
  13. Talk to Mundo Sackville-Baggins.
  14. Follow the map, and wait for events to unfold.
  15. Talk to Amdir.
  16. Talk to Celandine Brandybuck.
Rewards: Travel to Archet.
 
On arrival, talk to Mundo Sackville-Baggins to receive a new quest:

Intro: Amdir's Request
  1. Talk to Mundo Sackville-Baggins.
  2. Head south to find Amdir sitting under an awning, still injured.
  3. Talk to Amdir. He too will offer you a new quest, Intro: Captain Brackenbrook
Rewards: 1 silver, 60 copper, XP, choice of:
  • Cloth Gloves (Light Hands Armor, Bind on Acquire, 2 Armor)
  • Leather Gauntlets (Medium Hands Armor, Bind on Acquire, 3 Armor)
Intro: Captain Brackenbrook
  1. Talk to Amdir.
  2. Head south and head up the staircase to your right; this will take you into the Mad Badger Inn. Right click to open the door.
  3. Talk to Captain Brackenbrook.
  4. Head back out and talk to Amdir again. He will give you yet another quest!
Rewards: 90 copper, XP

Intro: Honing your Skills
  1. Talk to Amdir.
  2. Head southwest to the very crowded trainer area! Find the trainer associated with your class and talk to them to advance the quest.
  3. While here, pick up your level 2 skills/spells. See below for more information about skills.
  4. Return to Amdir.
Rewards: 42 copper, XP, 3 Simple Rations.
 
Skills
Each time you level up, your trainer will offer you new active and passive skills. Active skills are skills that you activate by clicking on their icon: this includes things like special attacks, heals, etc. Passive skills are passive abilities that are always active: this includes armor and weapon masteries, combat abilities, and weapon proficiencies. When you are training skills, make sure to scroll up and down both the active and passive lists, as skills are sorted by category, not availability. Also check out what is coming up in your future!
 
Once you have learned a new active skill, you can equip it to your hotbar by hitting the 'C' key to open up your character screen, clicking on the "skills" tab, finding the icon for the skill in question, and dragging it to the hotbar. Make sure to talk to Amdir again once you are done with your skills; he has another new quest for you, Intro: Seeing to the Defense. Before leaving, talk to Celandine Brandybuck for her quest, Intro: Remedy of the Old Kings.

Intro: Seeing to the Defense
  1. Talk to Amdir.
  2. Head south out of the gates of Archet; just southwest of the city you will find Dirk Mudbrick.
  3. Talk to Dirk Mudbrick.
  4. Head east to the large field area to find Growling Dusk-Wolves (level 3). Kill 6 of these.
  5. Return to Dirk Mudbrick, but first, head south to the ruins to complete Intro: Remedy of the Old Kings!
Rewards: 90 copper, XP, choice of:
  • Quilted Trousers (Light Legs Armor, Bind on Acquire, 4 Armor)
  • Leather Leggings (Medium Legs Armor, Bind on Acquire, 6 Armor)
Intro: Remedy of the Old Kings
  1. Talk to Celandine Brandybuck.
  2. Head south out of town and follow the road to the ruins called Bronwe's Folly.
  3. Here you will find Kingsfoil Plants; right click on them to collect the leaves. You need 4 leaves.
  4. Return to Celandine Brandybuck, but remember to finish Intro: Seeing to the Defense with Dirk on your way back, and pick up his new quest Intro: The Spies!
Rewards: 90 copper, XP, 2 Lesser Essences of Athelas
 
Once you have finished Intro: Remedy of the Old Kings with Celandine, head slightly northeast to speak with Peg Pruner and pick up the quest Fresh Supplies. Now head back south of town, you have two quests to complete!
 
Quest Log
If you start to lose track of what quests you are doing or where you are supposed to go, hit L to access your quest log!

Intro: The Spies
  1. Talk to Dirk Mudbrick.
  2. Follow the road south; hiding in a bush nearby should be a Blackwold Spy (level 3).
  3. Kill the spy and loot his corpse.
  4. Return to Dirk Mudbrick - but first, complete Fresh Supplies!
  5. Head into town and into the Mad Badger Inn.
  6. Talk to Captain Brackenbrook. Make sure to receive his new quest, Intro: The Captain's Son.

Rewards: 90 copper, XP, choice of:

  • Padded Vest (Light Chest Armor, Bind on Acquire, 5 Armor)
  • Leather Shirt (Medium Chest Armor, Bind on Acquire, 7 Armor)

Fresh Supplies

  1. Talk to Peg Pruner.
  2. Head south out of town and follow the road.
  3. Along the road you will find Bristlehide Piglets (level 2/3). Kill these, and loot their corpses to obtain slabs of boar-meat. You need 6 boar-meat.
  4. Return to Peg Pruner.

Rewards: 90 copper, XP, 5 Boar Jerky, choice of:

  • Quilted Shoulder Pads (Light Shoulder Armor, Bind on Acquire, 2 Armor)
  • Leather Shoulder Pads (Medium Shoulder Armor, Bind on Acquire, 3 Armor)
 
Before heading off to find Brackenbrook's son, take a look at your minimap; you will see a ring on the map, signifying a nearby quest giver. Find your way into the Archet Jail, an interior quest location. Here you can talk to Jailor Ned Pruner who will give you the quest Question the Prisioner. Outside, speak to Constable Thistlewool for Beyond the Bulwarks.

Intro: The captain's son
  1. Talk to Captain Brackenbrook.
  2. Head south out of town and follow the east path; look for Bilberry Bushes along the way for Question the Prisoner!
  3. At the end of the path, enter the Hunting Lodge.
  4. Talk to Jon Brackenbrook. He will also give you a new quest, Into: The Blackwold's Roost.

Rewards: 42 copper, XP, choice of:

  • Padded Shoes (Light Feet Armor, Bind on Acquire, 2 Armor)
  • Leather Boots (Medium Feet Armor, Bind on Acquire, 3 Armor)
 
Near the Hunting Lodge, talk to Atli Spider-Bane for Spiders at the Walls and Ann Granger for Stolen Treasures.

Stolen Treasures
  1. Talk to Ann Granger.
  2. Head south across the water and into the Blackwold's Roost.
  3. Enter the Roost and head southeast to find Ann Granger's Satchel.
  4. Return to Ann Granger.

Rewards: 90 copper, XP, choice of:

  • Spiked Wooden Mace (One-handed Mace, Bind on Acquire, 2.7 DPS)
  • Granger's Axe (One-handed Axe, Bind on Acquire, 2.7 DPS)
Intro: The Blackwold's Roost
  1. Talk to Jon Brackenbrook.
  2. Head south across the water to the Blackwold's Roost. Kill 6 Blackwolds; these range from level 3 to level 5 dependant on type. You probably killed several of these for Stolen Treasures!
  3. Return to Jon Brackenbrook.

Rewards: 90 copper, XP, choice of:

  • Cloth Hat (Light Head Armor, Bind on Acquire, 2 Armor)
  • Leather Helmet (Medium Head Armor, Bind on Acquire, 3 Armor)
 
While inside the Blackwold's Roost, right click on the Ancient Cairn to progress The History of the Dunedain Deed.

Spiders at the walls
  1. Talk to Atli Spider-Bane.
  2. Head west down the path and through the gate.
  3. Kill 5 Brood Hatclings.
  4. Continue down the path until you find the Dead Hunter. Right click his corpse.
  5. Return to Atli Spider-Bane.

Rewards: 90 copper, XP, choice of:

  • Frail Longsword (One-handed Sword, Bind on Acquire, 2.7 DPS)
  • Wooden Staff (Staff, Bind on Acquire, 3.1 DPS)
  • Atli's Shield (Shield, Bind on Acquire, 11 Armor)

Question the prisoner

  1. Talk to Jailor Ned Pruner.
  2. Head south out of town and follow the east path.
  3. Down the east path you will find Bilberry Bushes; right click these to collect piles of bilberries.
  4. Return to Jailor Ned Pruner.

Rewards: 90 copper, XP, 2 Lesser Celebrant Salve

Beyond the Bulwarks
  1. Talk to Constable Thistlewool.
  2. Head south along the path out of Archet.
  3. Talk to Cal Sprigley. While here, pick up Cal's quest, Old Bloodtusk.
  4. Return to Constable Thistlewool, but first complete Cal's quest!

Rewards: 90 copper, XP

Old Bloodtusk
  1. Talk to Cal Sprigley.
  2. Head east from his farm to find Old Bloodtusk (level 5) near a dead tree.
  3. Kill Old Bloodtusk.
  4. Return to Cal Sprigley.

Rewards: 90 copper, XP, choice of:

  • Fine Longsword (One-handed Sword, Bind on Acquire, 3.1 DPS)
  • Fine Two-Handed Sword (Two-handed Sword, Bind on Acquire, 3.5 DPS)
  • Fine Dagger (Dagger, Bind on Acquire, 3.1 DPS)
  • Stick Shortbow (Bow, Bind on Acquire, 3.1 DPS)
  • Fine Wooden Staff (Staff, Bind on Acquire, 3.1 DPS)
 
You are almost done with this area. Make sure that you have completed all outstanding quests, then talk to Jon Brackenbrook again:

Intro: The Assault on Archet
  1. Talk to Jon Brackenbrook.
  2. Talk to him again to enter an instanced area.
  3. Follow the path of Blackwolds and spiders; they range from level 2 to level 3.
  4. Head into Archet; here you will run into Calder Cob (level 4).
  5. On the ground is Jailor Ned Pruner, near death; talk to him.
  6. Head through the south gate; west of you is Amdir.
  7. Talk to Amdir.
  8. Just east of you is a Well; right click on it to gather water. Note that you cannot attack or use skills while carrying water.
  9. Head west to the flames near Amdir and put them out with the water.
  10. Continue through and fight the Blackwolds off one by one until Eogan (level 5) attacks you. Defeat him.
  11. Talk to Mundo Sackville-Baggins.
  12. Talk to Celandine Brandybuck.
  13. Once you have traveled back to Archet, talk to Jon Brackenbrook.
Rewards: 90 copper, XP, Map Home, Characteristic: Novice.
