Star Wars Galaxies News - Game Update 2 Publish Notes

Posted by Keith Cross on Mar 13, 2008  | 26 comments in our forums

SOE has released the publish notes for Game Update 2 for Star Wars Galaxies, which include veteran rewards, UI changes, a number of changes to the entertainer and the medic, and more.

Star Wars Galaxies: Game Update 2
Publish Notes, March 13, 2008

Veteran Reward:

  • Added the 57 month veteran rewards: the homing beacon and three new permanent storyteller tokens.

When placed in a structure you own, the homing beacon will allow you to land near your house from the space station above your home.

You can also choose a storyteller combat NPC to create a boss level enemy to wreak havoc in your event: a Dark Jedi, a Nightsister, or a Tusken. The token is No Trade and reusable with a certain amount of uses per day.

Entertainer:

  • A new instrument called the valahorn has been added to the profession wheel at level 90. This instrument sounds similar to the Kloo Horn.
  • New commands for creating some fantastic performances using synchronized solos and pauses have been added.
  • A new /bandpause command has been added. This command pauses specified instruments in the band. Typing /bandpause all pauses all instruments. Typing /bandpause <instrument> pauses the specified instrument.
  • A new /bandsolo command has been added. This command causes a specified instrument to play, and all others in band to pause. Type /bandsolo <instrument> to solo with the specific instrument.

There is quite a bit more in this particular patch so do follow the link for more of interest to all players.

Nice to see that they're still dealing with issues from beta here nearly five years later (buffs across sub-server boundaries, for example).

They still haven't fixed the economy or Jedi, which is why I quit. A player starting over with a new character doesn't have a chance to afford anything he should be able to afford as he levels, such as ships and parts. Jedi still cannot perform basic Jedi powers, such as force pull. There isn't any distinction between a light and dark Jedi, since they all can use the same powers. There isn't a lightsaber, defender, or healer/buffer specialization tree. You still cannot choose which lightsaber hilts you want to use or crystal color you want to use if you want to be competitive, instead you are stuck choosing between a handful of named color crystals and hilts. They still haven't introduced a way for Jedi to wear robes at CL90 and still be competitive, they instead are stuck with the JMC or Elders Robe.

Sorry, but this game is still crap after GU2, so I won't be resubbing. I really miss the game too.

It's not a bad product. I think it has become easier for the vets to hate the game then actually try it with an open mind.

Buffs across sub-server boundaries? What is that?

Anyway, I can't see myself playing anymore after 4 years. But after they finally show munitions some love I believe that this game will be worth recommending again finally.

probably not, i tried it for a few days during the time that vets could play for free, so maybe 3 or 4 days out of the 21 or so that i was able to use.

if it was completely free i might log into it a couple times a month but that would probably just be when i'm bored or my server is down.

I'm really sorry, that after having had the superior product, that I am unable to get into something that ain't half the quality of what I had.

Open mind ain't got anything to do with it.

Don't panic, Jedi get the love next in Game Update 3 ;)  So far the Dev assigned to the profession has talked about new robes, 5th gen sabers and new abilities for both Dark and Light side trees.  As an example, the lightside will possibly be getting a new ability called "Saber Reflect" which will work a bit like Saber Block but will also reflect incoming damage back at the attacked.

As for this update, it's made alot of Medics happy :)  The new buff/debuff display makes seeing what's happening to your character alot easier and certainly makes my role as a Medic easier.  Basically, if I see one of my group members has icons in their Debuff area I know straight away that I need to tend to them.

No. I'm not playing because the price is too high, because hell, I am usually subscribed to two MMORPG's. I won't play SWG, because it is a bad representation of the Star Wars Universe. As a Star Wars fan, I would never touch a bastardized version of Star Wars. The fact that there are quests, levels, and classes don't bother me. It is the fact that the classes are a poor representation of the actual professions, the quests are just grinding quests with no effort to hide the fact that they are meant to be grindy, there is only 1 way for a person to advance through quests and even that way has gaps where you need to grind, and for a game that is item centric, it only offers a few items worth anything, so everyone looks alike at the end. Plus the economy is horrible.

Even if the game was free, it would still COST me time and energy to play. It may sound like I am angry, but I'm not. I just don't like poor games.

Superiority is a matter of perspective. Yours is that pre-cu was superior, and so no matter the condition of the current game, you will never be satisfied.

You will however continue to speak about the game as if you played, cared, or had any input besides what you know from 2+ years ago. See what I'm saying? You're wasting your life; you and people like salvaje. You can't do anything but focus on how angry your are at pixels.

It's a good game. Going back into it thinking it's easier now gets you in a lot of trouble. I bet half of you people that re-sub for a day had no clue what to even do, and so you got frustrated and cancelled again. Don't judge people for not wanting to spend their fights spamming dots or dizzy/kd.

His perspective, my perspective and at least 200k others who told $OE to go shove it. Don't think for a moment that we are the minority, the ones who won't pay for a gutted, sub-par reflection of a once great game. It is the current playerbase that is the "vocal minority".
The large majority walked.

Time; being much more important than money, is what you are spending now.

The one commodity you will die trying to get more of, is being wasted on pixels.

You can give no interpretation of what is lacking from the game now, can you? You can only give your self-righteous jibber-jabber as if anyone in the real world cares how you were treated over a video-game.

If you don't like it, then the best thing you can do is leave it alone completely. I'll still be here to say that SWG is a good product. It's shortfalls are the lack of attention to weaponsmiths and the server populations where people have moved on to newer games.

But I defy any one of you "vets" to do anything worth while in the game now and be successful; then tell me you didn't have any fun doing it. No one owes you anything.

I played pre and post CU and have no particular rant to vent.. I am a fan of SOE through endless hours of fun in EQ2 but I just think that age is catching up with SWG.

I am glad they are still supporting it for the player base that stills enjoys it but I wonder how long it can continue with all the constant triple A new releases competing for the fan base and without a major graphical overhaul.

I tried resubbing a couple of months ago and it just felt a little bland.

I am sorry, this game is a bastardized version of Star Wars!

Did you not see the last 3 movies...The whiny brat that is to become Darth Vadar, the micro organisms that are really what the force is, the fact that Darth has no father (cough **Jesus**cough Born again**) the Jar Jar bullcrap, the list of how GL crapped on this series is near endless! Complain about the way they went with this game but, man don't say their version of Star Wars is worse than GL's steaming turd pile.

Considering that GL is the deciding factor of what Star Wars is and what it isn't, you don't really have much right to say what the pre-quals should have been. Last time I checked, GL invented Star Wars and had the entire story envisioned. So like it or not, these 6 movies is what Star Wars is "officially."

You sound like you are just trying to fit in with the rest of the crowd when you talk about Anakin being a whiny brat, midiclorians, and Jar Jar. Do you have any original opinions...something not stolen from the bandwagon of haters? I happen to think that Anakin properly portrayed a troubled teenager, which he was. Midiclorians was a good explanation of where the force came from. What did you expect, magic? Yes, Anakin didn't have a father, what is wrong with that? Do you think that Jesus has a patent on that and can't be used in a fictional setting? Yes, Jar Jar was goofy and annoying, but you hate him? Why, do you hate every race that is different than you? You see, there really isn't a very good logical reason for someone to hate the first 3 Episodes of Star Wars that can't be argued against intelligently, because all the reasons against the first 3 Episodes are based around unintelligent and immature knee-jerk reactions.

At any rate, you know SWG is a bastardized version of EP 4-6, even if you don't want to take EP 1-3 seriously. A Jedi who can use lightning, but can't perform a force pull, yeah that isn't bastardized. Or how about everyone running around with the same named crystal and hilts? Sounds bastardized to me. Last I heard, Knights found their own crystals and created their own lightsabers. Yeah, I know it is just a game, but I am not a game designer and I can think of better ways to develop a Star Wars MMORPG. In fact, read the official forums where all the suggestions have been made for Jedi. All of them have been agreed upon as being better than what currently is in game. The Jedi community has been very vocal about how their profession has been ignored since the release of the NGE and how it can be improved.

I understand that SWG has a loyal following and I don't wish for it to close down just because I don't like the game. I understand that SOE is responsible for this, but I don't wish for them to fail. SOE has the right to do what they want to their game, as I have the right to unsubscribe when I don't like the product anymore. But when the discussion comes up, you better believe I will voice my opinion on this issue, because that is the purpose of forums.

Thanks

O God I know, I can't even WATCH Episode III again. Very bad deal those movies. But for those who liked them they were fine, Im just saying I personally hated them. Its like Episode I didn't even matter compared to the other two. I don't know, I also think that no matter what they did there was really no way they were going to live up to the first 3. SWG is just the next step in disappointment from this franchise. What REALLY kills me is Ive seen FAN films with better lightsaber duels than these films.

Your first statement is the answer to the rest of your post.  LucasArts/Film is the deciding factor on what is Star Wars and what isn't.  If it's in the game, then it's something that has been approved by the Lucas companies.  For better or worse, LucasArts has openly stated that they're prepared to bend the rules of continuity for SWG on certain things, such as Jedi.  The LA producer of SWG mentions this in a recent interview on Startics
