The folks at Quest Online have decided to chart a different course for Alganon, opting to switch from a subscription based business model to a "subscription free" model. The key difference between "subscription free" and straight up "free-to-play" is that Quest Online is still requiring new users purchase the full game in order to play.
Initially, I thought this may mean that Alganon will essentially go the route of Guild Wars, as opposed to a traditional item mall supported game, but it appears to be a mixture of both. The announcement also makes mention of a "Tribute Market System" which will allow players to purchase items such as pets, mounts, equipment, potions, etc. using Tribute points, which are basically the game's cash shop currency. It's also important to note that Tribute will also be earned by players simply logging in and playing Alganon.
Players who subscribed to Alganon for extended periods of time will have their game time converted into Tribute points, resulting in 839 points for quarterly subscriptions, 1,559 points for semi-annual subscriptions, and 2,878 for annual subscriptions. These Tribute points will be awarded following the game's April launch, but with item shop prices currently unavailable it's hard to say whether or not this is a fair compensation.
