9Dragons News - Persistent Worlds Closes

Posted by on Jan 22, 2007  | 30 comments in our forums

The Persistent Worlds 9Dragons website carried this note today. It seems like Persistent Worlds will be closing up shop. So far, the North American company, Acclaim, has no such message, and lists the Game Status as "Open". MMORPG.com will continue to follow this story as it develops.

It is with regret that we have to announce that as of Jan 22nd Persistent Worlds has ceased trading. The servers will be shut down in due course.

I'm really not surprised that it folded. There was barely anyone playing the game - its a grindfest, like many korean style MMO's - the only thing different that it had was the animations for the different fighting styles.

perhaps the acclaim (aka the US version) will keep going for the people that liked it.

I just logged in 5 minutes ago for the U.S version. It's nice and strong at our end. Lots of people playing. Hope it stays that way. It might be a grind fest game, but it has some solid points too.

After trying beta I'm not surprised its failing too - the game lacked almost everything..grind grind and more grind. and no key driven movement is enough to get me to quit.

maybe the death of a few shallow content games will send a message to their makers that the market is looking for a bit more..

Pleeeeeeease don't blame PW here...

Having heard from people close enough to the source to know, the blame lies squarely with the independant company that dealt with finances.

You may not have dealt with them as 9D was still a free open beta.  But those of us who played Carpe Diem encountered the incompetent and utterly useless company that managed subscription payments and, ultimately, the cash flow for PW.

The f*c*-ups from this company basically screwed PW and prevented any promotion or growth that would lead to the two games actually succeeding.

I genuinely feel for the employees of PW - for most, todays events came as a complete shock.

I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself, but I really wish the people of PW the best of luck.  They were visible, helpful and always reachable.  If only all games were managed with such professionalism and passion.

It did seem to be one the cards, the 2 games they had weren't exactly top line flagship games. Then there was the basic timing of release of 9Dragons, the fact they wanted to run it P2P while another company offered it free, and the simple fact that its competing with some high powered free and paid games as well.

P2P was never going to happen because for a monthly fee there are a lot of better games, loads of them. There are even F2P games that are a lot better than it, especially in popularity with games like Scions of Fate that have a fan following that can only be described as "desperate" to play.

They were a nice company,  but it wasnt going to happen.

Acclaim could look into buying the PW user database, but because of data protection etc, that could be a problem. If they were able to aquire it and run it as an EU server then they stand to gain a decent amount of players. But since they are running a free server its unlikely to be cost effective to do so.

that wouldbe an awsome idea BUT if they could speak with the former owner of PW and see wot they can sort out, if they could buy the database that would be AWSOME. but who knows its early days yet

same here my  RL5 Monk and my time is gone

well i will start over tonight with the acclaim version cuz i like the game very very much.
grinding in 9 dragons is a lot more fun for me, then questing or instance raiding in all the mainstream mmorpg on the market right now.

i hope enough eu players will start over again with the acc. version so  i'm not alone in the noob area's

There are a lot of games that are getting shoved out the door, often unfinished and unplayable.  The players that like it pay the price and for a subscription, then end up holding the bag.

Thankfully this crashed before release.

You are totally right. That's the reason why I stopped playing. After trying the game for sometime, I saw there was really not much else to do but grinding.

Anyways they probably have other issues in mind.

Hmm politicians telling us what games are good or bad for us? NO PLEASE!!!

The "standard commision" are the end users. They decide what games are worth playing.

Just a little comment about you saying about Stop being lazy, Grind is something made up by people that do not uderstand mmorpg, a mmorpg should never be a grind its should be a adventure of explorations, when it becomes a grind its not worth of being a mmorpg.Kinda my reason that even tho a game like wow is fun its just not a mmorpg, atleast not in the way orginal mmorpg should be. I have tried 9dragons but it wasn't my type of game, can't comment about the game if it is or not is a true mmorpg. but if combat is the only means to lvl then its not a real mmorpg atleast not in my book (read personal opinion)

Vangaurd is the mmorpg where you can lvl without combat WOOT! no combat and still be able to have fun in a mmorpg

I Still think that ppl who do not like to grind are lazy, grinding is a part of all mmorpg's even that sorry asz game WoW...

All It Makes Me Say Is "WoW....you guys actually pay a monthly subscription for that piece of sh*t game?"

Another thing is that if I am paying for a game it better be good, I have played WoW, its alrite, but not worth the money

There are many decent games out there but all cost an arm and a leg, with the exception of guild wars which I think

Is A Decent Pricing model.

SO you lazy players who do not want to grind to attain lvls and skills I suggest you go buy a Xbox or PS and buy an rpg

that seems more like your style.

If they ever make an MMORPG where lazy ppl such as your self could lvl as easy as some one like me who actually dedicates time to this cause, then i will never play it.

Lazy ppl are the ones using scripts, macros, and in general third party software, they have no patience, go play a console!

Fully agree at your last comment about "Lazy people are the ones using.....", don't mistake my words with that of being lazy my friend, i meself like you started your responce am hardcore, like i said grind does not excist for me, its fun to be able to do the stuff that needs to be done in the world you game in, you might call that grind i call that fun that the only difference between so please read what i said before you insult me with that sentence "people as your self" as i did not insult you in anyway nor form but just added to what i think should not be called grind as infact its only doing stuff that needs to be done to survive that world. And if means surviving in a world that you need to kill hunderd of critters then so be it, but don't call it grind as that has a negative tone to it, and don't be narrowminded when i say Vangaurd possible to lvl without combat as that can mean full dedication towards crafting wich can still consume lots of fun time (you might  use the word "grind" for it.)

So you see we share the same view we just not use the same words

Ok, I'll tell you one: Guild Wars Nightfall.  I hit the cap of 20 mostly by doing all the side quests in the starting areas.  Barely even knew how to play well. :)  Sure, you may later choose to grind for cash, equipment upgrades, or skill points, but you never have to grind for *level*.  And it seems like it's balanced so that you could pretty much follow the main plotline and keep up even if you totally ignore the side quests.  GW is different.  Ok, so it's not exactly a full MMROPG, more like a love-child between Diablo, Dungeon Siege, and  Magic: The Gathering, with PvP properly planned for.  But I love it so far.

When people say the game is a grindfest, or it's all about the grind, they are not separating that game from other MMOGs that require you to repeat the same things over and over again to advance. No, what they are saying is that those repeatable actions in the "grind game" are BORING, whereas the MMOGs that people actually enjoy are not referred to in that way, although they may be doing the same kinds of actions. I am one of those people who felt 9Dragons was a grindfest. It did have potential, and it was moderately fun for a few days, but then it got very old, and I could feel the repetition. I am not trying to insult those who enjoy the game. That's great for those people, and I'm glad they do, but I found it too simplistic and repetitive. Sorry to those who enjoyed the game and now can no longer play...

I was in the beta, but hadn't played in a while due to the Vanguard beta.  While waiting for the Vanguard release, I've been reviewing my installed online games and also got the message about 9dragons being shut down.  I was slightly suprised at the terse message, but not suprised that it wasn't sucessful.  I found it somewhat interesting in the different style of play, but didn't find anything that really attrected me to it.
In summary, its sad to see a game fail when its not a poorly implemented game, but in todays highly competitve market, if you don't offer something that a significant number of players really like, you won't build a large enough customer base to survive.  I've been looking for an alternative to WoW for over a year now and after trying dozens of betas, I think Vanguard will be my main game for at least this year.
