EverQuest II News - Will of a Tyrant

Posted by Jon Wood on Jan 25, 2010  | 14 comments in our forums

MMORPG.com EverQuest II Reporter Phil James writes this look at the recent Will of a Tyrant update leading up to the game's next expansion, Sentinels of Fate.

Everquest II's latest update is 'Will of a Tyrant'. This was primarily a bug stomping update, with over 600 bugs exterminated. Good news for fans who have been demanding this for years. Personally I can live with broken quests as long as they don't break the game. What many of us are relishing is the new quest series, 'Attack on the Crowns', which is the lead up to the new expansion, 'Sentinel's Fate'.

'Sentinel's Fate', launches in February. This is EQ2's sixth expansion. With it comes a level cap increase of 10, bringing us to 90; two new overland zones, which may not sound like much, but EQ2 zones tend to be massive; a new major city; a starting zone which we are promised will be the best new player experience to date; and 12 dungeons. There will also be the many new quests, mobs, items and so on for us to undertake, slay and gather up.

Read Will of a Tyrant.

You're making me wanna fire up my EQ2 account again. I still stand by my assessment that EQ quests had the most interesting story-lines of any MMO I have played. Hell, EQ1 epic quests were TRULY epic.

It sure sounds interesting. But, for me EQ2 is a closed chapter, like an ex love. I never will forget the sheer pain and loneliness in my last try to play it again, when I was ALWAYS alone, and the endless hours of shouting LFG LFG! and none cared rats ass, and you just COULD NOT do anything real, because in the typical EQ2 way EVERYTHING was in quest lines and finding people on the same quest was night to impossible. And of course nothing of interest was ever soloable. I never felt so forsaken than in my last EQ2 attempt, because unless you have many connection with players and daily scheduled gaming routines, you can FORGET doing ANYTHING in EQ2.

NO WAY.

The german servers are not ghost towns, far from it, Innovation is less populated but Valor is well off, I play often so I know. And since last year EQ2 has become very solo friendly too. I just learned yesterday from a guildie how to solo heroic mobs with adds as a Troubadour . That strategy never ever appeared to me but heck, I'm a casual player and almost solo all the time if not playing with guildies or friends. And I'm only level 70 and don't even own TSO so have no AAs in its line which has a lot of impact obviously.

Making it from level 32 to 70 in 1.5 years with very little playtime the first year (2-3 hours a week maybe) and only grey content ... you have no idea how fast one can level in EQ2 meanwhile. And you can drain all your XP gain into AA as well, there is a slider to define the ratio.

So you are saying for example, that the mostly solo quest line in Everfrost for the has nothing of interest? There is so much solo content in EQ II now that is actually can be annoying to not be able to find a group, especially when the game, JUST LIKE OTHER OLD MMOGs, is old enough to have many people at the level cap. The AB server is supposed to have a range of people, I suppose because of the RP aspect (isn't it a one-character only server?).

Instead of shouting LFG, did you LFG in chat channels? Did you LFM or "Starting xxxx group, send tells"? So many people expect others to invite them, without doing the work themselves, so many stand around LFG expecting the other LFG people to invite them.

Did you try a different server? Did you have a guild of like-minded players of similar play times and levels?

Sony Online Entertainment has nothing to do with the placement of product in your local gaming stores. They make deals, and if the company doesn't want to stock it on their shelves, then they don't. You can always order online if you want a box copy, or go to that store and ask if they will order it for you.

Im tempted to come back, I did love Norrath for most of teen and up years. I suppose I could get the station pass since Vanguard is quite fun at times and EQ1 will be back in the mix too! I was actually just looking at EQ1 starter pack with 15 expansions in one bundle for 19 dollars. I suppose if I do return, Ill get that too.

Yeah agreed, I often miss the EQ universe, EQ1 was my first real MMO =(

Might have to check this out,  I've never felt like i earned something in an MMO more than when I finished my magician epic weapon quest, lol.

I was torn between staying with EQ2, the pig of all MMOs, or going back to WoW after years away because of 3.3s LFG tool. But in the month or so that I've had renewed interest in WoW my account has been jacked, banned and suspended twice despite being inactive. That's reason enough for me not to want that headache on an MMO I'm actually playing so EQ2 it is. The joke is here at work we aluminum hatted that the WoW jacks were to get people back in game since free time is given to jacked accounts to come see 3.3. Then I got suspended again for loss of account control so the theory went up in smoke. Anyway, Antonia Bayle and Crushbone are the busy PvE servers. Others can hit mid pop but others are empty. SOE really should either take a page from WoW and have cross server LFG or start merging some servers. AB is a lag fest because people want that group thing from 1-80 but then at 80 its a cluster fuck with far too many people to support the available space. Crushbone is better. Ideally you level in AB then jump back to your home server. Now only if it performed like WoW or even AoC would be nice. If there was one game that made me want to scrap my Phenom II setup for an i5, EQ2 is it ;) For the been away crowd, leveling from 1-75 is a 2 day played trip without outside help. 75+ is slower but with SF out in a month being under geared is about to be a moot point. Granted T3/T4 gear will carry your to 90 for sure and Myth epics aren't crap but SF gear will be better. So right now I am getting me SK and Inq to 80 and parking them until the cap is lifted then bum rush the rest of the RoK/TSO content before heading to SF probably already capped at 90.
