SOE has screwed up as usual. The Pre-Order and 7-day headstart is only available in US stores and not available to international / non-US customers.
There are two 45+ page topics about this matter on the official forums. And SOE has been dead silent about this for the last 8 weeks. And made people only angrier.
Ahh well. If there is something SOE has mastered these last years, then it's continueing shooting their own feet.
Cheers
Eq2 is still a great game with lots of potential and this expansion is going to be very good. The problem as always is SoE itself. Screwing over digital subscribers in distribution is not something that will soon be forgotten.
Potential?
EQ2 is a great game but it is almost 6 years old. It have already reached most of it's potential. The graphics updates and the massive content makes it playable for a few years more but I think this will be my last year in it.
Still, I have some hope for the expansions, this time will my guild get a few worlds first items at least (hopefully some of those mine). The devs have made a great job updating the game but it do seems to get easier with every expansion.
6 years is a venerable age for a game, I think this will be my last expansion even though I had a lot of fun.
With this pre-order fiasco SOE have shown, once more, that they have no regard for any of their non-US customers.
To gain access to the expansion on the 16th of February (and to gain access to several, unique, ingame items, that will not be available in any other way) you need to purchase the retail version of the expansion. This retail version is only being sold by US retailers. All non-US customers will have to wait until the digital download becomes available on the 23rd February.
SOE have stated that thay have agreements with Amazon.COM, Bestbuy and Gamestop to give them explicit rights to the pre-order bonuses. This, SOE state, has been done in an effort to get EQ2 onto the shelves of the large retailers, something that customers have been asking for for a long time now.
Sure, this will see 3 of the largest game retailers stocking EQ2, but, all 3 have always stocked the latest expansions anyway. This marketing tactic seems to have back-fired in a huge manner. It has stoked huge bad feeling amongst the non-US EQ" community (For those with access to the EQ2 boards, just read through the 46+ page thread HERE ) and what has it gained SOE? Three large companies are going to be stocking pre-order copies of a game that they would probably have stocked anyway. Will there be copies of the game on the shelves of high street retailers once the expansion has launched? I doubt it very much.
A lot of non-players I have discussed this ask why this is such a big problem, after all, us non-US customers just need to be a little patient and wait 7 more days to play the content. And I agree, 7 days is not a long time, I am normally a very patient person, but, there are mechanics in the game that reward those who are the first to achieve something, this is something we will be missing out on, this is a minor point though. It comes down to SOE treating the non-US population as second-class citizens once more. This is not a new concept...
Exchange rate - SOE have always had their own system for setting the $ to non$ exchange rate. A system that ends up costing those that pay their subscription rates in a non-US currency a higher monthly fee than those that pay in dollars. Although this situation has been reduced somewhat, it still costs non-US citizens far more to subscribe due to the bloated exchange rates that SOE use.
Server reliability and communication - SOE houses its main server-clusters in the US. The servers for the Euro servers are physically located in Holland. These servers seem to be less reliable than the US servers. Not by a huge amount but, the reliability issues are compunded by the fact that the customer service representatives seem to have a very hard time remembering about us non-US customers and keeping us informed when there is a problem. If a US server goes down or there is some other problem on a US server, there is usually a forum communication within a short timeframe and regular communication from there on. If a Euro server goes down, there is normally hours of wait for communication and then news is very sparse (and, on many occassions, no communication at all)
Game updates - Non-US servers get all game updates one day later than US servers. There is a system where world-wide firsts are recognised, this makes a world-first a very rare happening on non-US servers.
Competition and events - SOE hosts many events and competitions, many with prizes in the form of ingame items, subscription cards, Virtual cardgame crads etc.. These are never available for non-US customers to enter (this includes all tournaments in the Legends of Norrath virtual cardgame). SOE reps state that tere are legal issues for this. Many times SOE have been asked how it is that many other US companies manage to allow their non-US customers to take part in contests and competitions, yet SOE cannot. This question is never answered.
I started this post just hoping to bring attention to the pre-order fiasco. Once I started typing I reliased just how much the situation with SOE and non-US customers annoys me. I don't normally come to forums and rant about stuff and am not one of the many people that instinctively hates any product with the SOE logo, I have been an SOE subscriber for many years, I played SWG from launch, stuck with it through the CU and left when the NGE hit, but even then, continued to pay SOE monthly subs by playing EQ2.
Its just a game , I know this, and many of the issues are very minor in comparisson to other problems in the world. But, a lot of SOE customers are starting to get very annoyed with the way they are being treated, myself included.
8 weeks of deafening silence from SoE. 8 weeks of their inept and inadequate customer services treating international "valued" customers like a sub-human species.
I dont think SOE ever had any attention to ship overseas and always intended a USA only head start and have been used the "what they dont know, wont hurt them" approach by telling the international player base exactly nothing in months
Has been 8 WEEKS of customer questions / complaints and NOT ONE reply from SOE.
They are doing a great job in ANTI-PR and to summaries the thread listed above ( nearly 700 replies) SOE are launching their new expansion to everyone in the USA and anyone that lives outside the USA will get the game 7 days later by digital download. That is unless you want to pay about $140 to get the retail box shipped to the UK / Europe and even then you should get it 3-4 days after the release.
THE WHOLE THING STINKS and to be honest sums up the way the comapny and game are going.
There are too many things in life than trying to get blood out of a stone. SOE seem to want the game to fail and after the last 8 weeks of NOTHING - I hope it does.
I just hope that the bunch of clueless monkeys SoE has put in charge of their marketing for EQ2, will be demoted to flipping burgers at their local fast food joint after this "long live the USA, lets screw the rest of the world" fiasco.
EQ2 is a great game, but sadly people running it are complete and utter idiots.
Having a 50 page thread about it on the official forums and basically no communication for anyone responsible for this mess in over 8 weeks is proof enough of that.
Bah.
I completely agree here. There are some great content designers, with a couple that should know better. Luckily one of them has moved on recently but their Customer Service is a joke and their marketing department couldnt sell Whiskey to an alcoholic without wasting months of time and then screwing it up.
I feel bad for those who cannot get the preorder and early access. I agree that SoE has screwed the pooch yet again.
Still, seeing the preview to the Hole zone was enough to make me forget my hatred of Smed and resub and order two collectors editions.
Wether i get them in time or not is another story.
I just want to go to the hole, hopefully not as a corpse at the bottom :P
A prearranged phone call to a senior person at Soe customer services, yielded the following results, when questioned about why SoE hasnt made the expansion available to foreigners
- The last expansion did so poorly in retail sales outside of the USA that consideration was given into further retail sales outside the USA [ I read this as no retail sales will be made outside the USA ]
- No head start period will be given to any digital download
- No contract has been signed on any international distributions [ but he didnt go as far as saying that no talks had been made ]
