NCSoft and Cryptic Studios have announced that City of Villains is going to be supporting AGEIA PhysX, which promises to enhance the gameplay experience for players of the popular MMORPG.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – March 21, 2006 – AGEIA™ Technologies, Inc., the pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics for games, today announced that City of Villains™ developer Cryptic Studios plans to supercharge the game’s powers and effects for players whose PCs are equipped with Physics Accelerator add-in boards powered by the AGEIA PhysX™ processor. The standalone sequel to the hugely popular City of Heroes from NCsoft, City of Villains was an immediate hit among MMORPG fans and critics alike with its intense interactivity and exceptional particle systems. While all City of Villains players benefit from the game’s software physics created by the AGEIA PhysX SDK, players with PhysX Accelerator cards will experience some 10 times the number of particles displayed in physics-based events, resulting in an even more immersive experience. For example:
“City of Villains players with PhysX-based Physics Accelerator add-in boards in their PCs will be blown away by the added realism and immersiveness of the game,” said Michael Lewis, CEO of Cryptic Studios. “While the ability to succeed in the game will be unaffected, the overall user experience will be greatly enhanced through support for the AGEIA PhysX processor.” “The team at Cryptic Studios is among the most talented in the business, and it’s exciting to see them apply their wizardry using AGEIA PhysX technology,” said Kathy Schoback, vice president of content acquisition at AGEIA. “City of Villains is already a one-of-a-kind game experience, but the action acceleration of the AGEIA PhysX processor will take it to an entirely new level.” |

Hey thats good news, I always loved the effects of the bodys when they died in CoV. My favorite was an enemy jumping onto the phone lines then I killed him he fell down but then was hanging by one foot on the wire, eventually falling. It was just to cool wish more games had it. So this is another bonus. Dont play the game anymore but cant really say anything bad about this move
Whoop-de-doo. Game developers just don't get it. They keep trying to push the latest graphics technology that requires constant upgrades for consumers to keep up. Yet these same companies sit and look at Blizzard with envy, mindless of the fact that part of Blizzard's design philosophy is making the game accessible to the widest range of PCs. This, combined with a friendly interface, is largely responsible for World of Warcraft's 6 million plus subscribers.
Cryptic has bigger concerns than their graphics. The game is shallow and repetitive and the interface is riddled with quirks that make the game harder to play than it needs to be. City of Villains has languished in its unfinished state for nearly four months. Anyone got a character to 50 yet? Of course not, because you can't. Many of the exciting "Quality of Life" features that Emmert and Company have been talking about since the game's beta are still "far off", according to the development staff. This just looks like another case of Cryptic misplacing their priorities.
" ... (snip) ... for players whose PCs are equipped with Physics Accelerator add-in boards powered by the AGEIA PhysX™ processor."
Never heard of it.
NVidia is working with Havok to offload the physics processing onto the GPU, thus turning the CPU-limited GPU into a dedicated physics processor. Anyone with a 6800 GT or better will be able to take advantage of this, with SLI configurations being especially suited for this, without anything other than new drivers and possibly game patches.
Do they think that I'm going to spend money on something that I've never heard of when I can use a system that's in virtually every new game released and that will support my existing hardware?
ppffttt.
Lastly, CoH - and I would assume that CoV uses the same system - was probably the most repetitive MMORPG that I've played. They need to spend the money on adding game play to the game, not partnering up with little-known groups that add very little value for their gamers.
I wonder if they honestly think that there's nothing wrong with their existing experience and all that they have to do is add more meaningless fluff to their game to make it more interesting.
The less bad MMO on the market just got better!
I agree that the way corpses drop around is great fun for a player, I didn't even give it attention for at least a full month of been playing the game, but eventually, such details does matter. It show you the love some folks put into the game.
To bad they bring the Hamidon HOs, the IoP, I2-I6 and ED! Just imagine a moment how great the game would be...well...I would prolly be unemployed if they would have been that great and not doing all those nasty mistakes. But hey, if some of their designers do some mistake, can you blame the whole team?
At any rate, I am looking forward to try it after I7. But...can we trust them on the Design level? I mean, I2, I3, I4, I5, I6...ED, Hamidons HOs, IoP...that is a freaking score of crude mistakes on what was the strongest MMO mechanic out there! Even if most of I2-I6 are improvements, each of them have a critical flaw which ruin everything.
Tell me, Mister Statesman, now that the Monsters regen like hell, who are hunting them now? Tell me Mr. Statesman, do you see score of folks hunting the Monsters in Peregrine Island? I recall arguing with 3 other scrappers about not pulling their Monsters on my arse if they can't figure out how to single pull them, I would rather pull for them than seeing that!
Oh, but I am sure Mister Statesman that the point about nerfing those Monster was to kill soloing rather than to developp grouping, then even if nobody hunt those monsters, it don't bother you at all? They where never good XP. But they where a badge of honor for any respectable scrapper, back then. Solo deserve a PRIME position in the MMORPG which will lead the market, Monsters where not enough, but they where a freaking good start although an accidental. But that is prolly something you can't consider, can you? Solo rewards for soloers? Making the BEST soloers on the server peoples who earn everything solo, is that something to hard for you to design?
Hide behind coercitive logics if you must, I am a grouper before been a soloer myself. The more peoples trash solo, the more I want to solo. Reverse logic.
CoH at release was the LESS BAD MMO for SOLO and for GROUPING. WoW is the second best MMO for SOLO and for GROUPING. Draw your conclusions, but I can tell you that the overwhelming majority want to SOLO & GROUP in PvE...PvP, raiding and tradeskills should never be made at the expanse of Solo or Grouping no matter what. But think what please you, enforce grouping on soloers. Enforce PvP with IoP. Those are mistakes and they fireback at you. I remember seeing peoples which I can admire solo in front of me at the release of CoH, which is something I didn't see for a very long time in old EQ, soloers with skills, solo understanding and solo logic. Soloers which I can respect.
Those soloers are not very socials persons and...they just quit quietly. Most of them would be embarass that I even stand for them, shout for them. I am a meek soloer myself, well maybe not that bad, but certainly not a leading soloer. I am a grouper. But I can defend the rightfull needs of a soloers, and as a grouper, I always enjoy to see folks soloing around, even if they don't want to group with me, if I am nice MAYBE they will accept to group later, maybe not. I can solo and try to learn on my side and maybe they will pop around interested in helping me. Maybe they are among the nicest folks around if not very argumentatives.
Instead of developping PvP/Raiding/Tradeskills, you should be developping what CoH lack most, SOLO! Been the less bad MMO about soloing is just as good as the competitors allow you to benefit from it, eventually a good soloing MMO will also be a good grouping MMO and then, every competitor will cry. Maybe this MMO will do nothing else then soloing and grouping, but it will master those 2 aspects, which is the basic.
And some customer actually like better graphics than the craptastic engine WoW uses. BLoom can't hide the crappy engine now matter how much you crank it up.
Let the people that can't afford or refuse to upgrade play games like WoW and those of us that actually like stunning graphics get games that support the "current" technology.
Sorry, but I can't remember how long ago I threw away my B&W TV or I'd try and get it to someone that actually likes that kinda graphics.
My only hope is MORE games do this. Does this include CoH?
CoH? Oh, that MMO I briefly played back then, shortly after release? Aye, I remember that. Had some great fights. People flying through the air, insane moves, good action. Was fun for a while because of that, but since it was the only thing there was to do, it didn't take long before it became just another fight.
My point is...
You can only watch so many newspaper vending machines blow up before that "Damn that looked awesome" effect wears off. That's before we even bring up the fact that most people probably won't buy this gizmo unless it ends up being very affordable and goes into a standard PCI slot so that any tech newbie can figure it out. All in all, it seems like a total waste of development effort that could be put to use elsewhere.
Oh well... MMO developers never learn
You wont need to, ATI and nVidia have on card physics processing due for release so if any company asks you to buy hardware for their codec, you can say piss off, my gfx card does that already.
Here is another news bit. Seems they are finally gonna have a chip to actually sell.
