Age of Conan: Unchained News - Buddy Key Program up and Running

Posted by Keith Cross on Jul 23, 2008  | 27 comments in our forums

Funcom has announced that the first part of the Age of Conan Buddy key program is now operational, allowing those who purchased a Collector’s Edition to invite their friends to seven days of game time.

We have now opened the first part of the Buddy key program for Age of Conan! Everybody who has purchased a Collector’s Edition can now invite up to five friends, who can try the game for seven days without purchasing a retail box.

The invitation process is easy. You need to log-in to your account pages (https://register.ageofconan.com), and choose “Buddy program”. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then write a personal message to your friends if you so desire.

We recommend that you lend your install DVDs to your buddy to get him or her ready to play as fast as possible. Alternatively your buddy will be offered a $2,99/€2,99 client download with 3 additional days of playtime to cover the download time.

I love the way they sneaked in the pay pr. download AFTER the collector editions were all sold and done with. HA!

I will never invite anyone to this mess of a game. They should have said these keys were not in at launch.

Terrible company and to say it s to pay for the cost of bandwith etc is just lame. If you re such a successful game and want more customers show them some respect and cover those costs not milk them for every cent. I have no respect for this scam artist company at all.

That seems strange. Normally can't you invite a friend for free with those buddy codes from day 1?

Nah Funcom "forgot" to say to people that DX10 and sieges and buddy keys were not in the game and that the CE ring had a level cap.

Obviously - as I stopped after my free month (can't pay this dishonest company anything) no one will benefit from my buddy keys now.

On the plus side for people who wants to try it, I am sure you can find this game in the 1$ bin pretty soon...

Well, initially the servers were so busy with all the people they said they were waiting for stability.  Now the servers are so empty because so many have quit.  My guild, with it's tier 3 keep, is dying because no one logs on anymore.  For awhile yesterday, I was the only person online out of over a hundred members.  Even the raids have turned people away from the game.  I have 5 buddy keys but don't see the point in handing them out.  It is all very depressing.  The game certainly had potential but failed miserably.  Maybe it will make a come back, but will all the players come back or just wait for the next new MMO in hopes that one gets it right.?.

I don't know what game you've been playing but I logged on yesterday evening for the first time in a week (was busy with real life things) and half of the servers said "heavy load". And my servers (pvp and pve) are always packed.

Pretty sad that it took this long for it to be implemented. Just another example of Funcom's epic faliure with AoC.

Well Valentia, my son continued playing AoC after most of the rest of us quit,  I just talked to him last night.  He plays on the pvp server Shadowblade and also the pve Mannanan and he said both of those servers are deader than a door nail.  He still likes the game, but there is hardly anyone to play with anymore so he is quiting at the end of his subscription.

I think the servers you are on are pretty much the exception rather than the rule.  They have lost A LOT of the playerbase and it continues to drop at a large rate.

I personally got so fed up with Funcom, I just deleted all my characters so I won't ever think of going back, that is how much I dislike this game.

Just goes to show that graphics does not make a game good, it can add to the experience.  AoC has so little content now and very little upcoming that it will take them quite some time to make this game interesting.

I just know I'm happy that with a dead guild on bloodspire that at the begining had 100+ and now a good day has 4 total showing up that I still have my DAoC accounts open and that they have free 14 day trials available with client downloads included in teh free price ;)

Kylie?

You play AoC with a character named Kylie?
Funcom have indeed thrwon up a turd in AoC, but to play a Hyborian character named Kylie sums it up. Not only Funcom is to blame for this debacle.

For the short, initial subscription time I played AoC I loved it, then I noticed characters called....Kiera, Angelina and yes, Arnold running around.

Why do people do that?

Why do you play yhe role of 'Kylie' when such a name is totally opposed to the scheme of things?

Do you think you are clever? Or just do it to piss off the RP players?

Wow this is pretty pathetic if you get worked up over little stuff like this. People will name their character whatever they want to, because it is for their own entertainment. Why is it that your play experience is disturbed so easily by something as insignificant as another person's name that you are more then likely not going to play with in the first place.

I RP friend and i have to say that RP has nothing to do with your name! i can understand names like Leetcollector and such but really Kylie, arnold and such are valid names, ok they might not be perfect for the conan universe, other than arnold ( i think thats a very conan name ) it's more how they ply thier character than how they name them friend!

I don't see what you guys are smoking.  AoC is badass imo.  I loved it because the fighting is actually progressing rather then going WoW style.   Sadly I cannot afford the 50$ game righ tnow as i gotta wait till the price drops then i'll buy it.

But if someone wants to give me a 7 day buddy key that would be badass tb_nicholas@hotmail.com :D.

You don't even have the game yet?  Then you probably don't know that after level 80, the game drops away into a boring, depressing void.  I enjoyed the game until recently.  I would even join groups to do some of the instances that are already in place.  But the players just aren't there.  Even daily quests to help make money would be something.  Especially as the economy is also depressing.  And with fewer people paying, I wonder if crafters will have trouble finding advanced guilds that are needed to make the final level items.  My guild has been stuck at tier 3 since so many have quit and there are too few players to recruit new ones.

The villas are your daily quests to make money. You can still do them at 80 right? There are also raids, seiging, guild cities, crafting, world pvp & pvp minigames (soon with rewards).

I've logged around 250 hours since prelaunch with 2 alts in the 20s and one main in the 70s. If people have maxed out their chars and cities then that's their loss. Time to wait for the content to catch up, as with every other single MMO out there.

As for the buddy keys, it is a bit cheeky expecting people to pay for the download although it is around 20GB. Someone has to pay for that bandwidth and I'd rather it was a trial player than coming out of my subs

I would try the game with a Buddy Key or when a free trial is released but I had decided long ago to wait on trying this game till then because it was not one that I was really looking for. It did sound like a fun game but sorry to hear that it has such big problems. Don't expect to get a buddy key since my friends either don't play MMOs much any more or only play their old ones that they are happy with.

I have no sympathy for those who rush to top lvl. MMOs usually improve with time so I have 7 characters all chugging along enjoying the game - which will get better every patch/upgrade.
