World of Warcraft News - WoW Visa

Posted by Keith Cross on May 04, 2007  | 27 comments in our forums

These days you can collect and save up points on your credit cards to put toward buying all sorts of useless junk and services. Gamers use their credit cards to pay for their gaming, why can't our purchases count towards something more useful to us? Blizzard has teamed up with the First National Bank of Omaha to answer this question with the World of Warcraft Rewards Visa, allowing players to save those points to put toward game time.

Hmm...

I'm a "debt collector".  More accurately, I'm a "skip tracer".  I find this very intresting.

I wonder what impact this will have on the FDCPA or the FTC's allowance of accetable means to collect a debt.  Anyone think that sometime in the foreseable future that a "person" might "aquire" another's "virtual goods" to be sold at a profit in the act to "collect a debt"?

What would happen if someone sends you a tell ingame "Hello there -name-, this is an attempt to collect a debt..."?

Obviously it would be "illegal" for a debt collector to steal virtual items, but do you think it could be deamed as a legitmate payment if someone turned over a Game Account or virtual goods as a means of payment?

p.s.  Don't ever tell anyone your personal information through online communication.

This is yet another attemp by First National to get people ages 17-24 endebted to them for prolonged periods of time by offering 'Free Money'.

I am highly disappointed in Blizzard for agreeing to this deal.  Though I cannot say that I am shocked.  People have made comments about other game companies like SoE and K2 Network being money grubbing, but neither of those companies have stooped so low as to work with a company that is being banned on college campuses all across the country for approve lines of credit and loans to individuals who have NO WAY of paying them back.

At least when they work with companies like Disney and Fox, they are distinctly adverting to the parents, but here, parents will rarely if ever see these adveritsments.  They are designed to put Young Adults in debt.  This is unbelievable.

it's 100% you're own stupid fault if you get into debt you cant repay, however as so much of the population has such a low level of common sense this will continue to be a problem.

Lots of adults play WoW... it's not like they're advertising on Nickelodeon. But let's continue to blame capitalism... it's a great scapegoat for general public ignorance.

I actually like it.  Right now my card gives me long distance.  Problem is in the 6 years I have had it, I have never called long distance.  And if I do I use my cell.

I would apply but I bet I would be denied.

Ok, so I spend $1,500 a month, and I get a free month of play time valued at roughly $15, and then I have to repay that $1,500... PLUS interest....

Yea... sign me up for that!

Lets see, If Im doing my math correctly I spend that much a month anyways most of which on bills.  If I use the card for this purpose, I can payoff the debt befor Interest hits and have a free month of WoW...  So..  in some cases this could work.

If you pay off your credit card each month you don't pay interest.

It's not a credit card companies fault if people go into debt. It's their own damn fault for racking up charges they can't pay.

That is pretty stupid. Why not just team up with every credit card company and let us use the points we got, to get a gamecard.

But instead of mailing us a game card, they would just email us the game card number which we can use for WoW. Wouldnt that make more sense, then just a one credit card.

The reason people go into debt is because of credit cards. We should elimate it, and just keep with debit cards. atleast that way, you know you can pay the bill.

I am pro anything a game company does to make more money that does not screw up the game. Since this has no impact at all on the game itself, it's fine by me.

i agree, I too only use my bank debit card. I no longer use credit cards. All the purchases I need can be paid directly through my bank account. IF you become indebted you have no one to blame but yourself. you dont spend money you dont have or can't pay off by a certain time frame. People see free money and dont realize the reprucutions of having a credit card and not having the financial backing to pay off the bill they have. but when i had a credit card I always paid off before the interest kicked in. thats how they make alot of money off you.

I may one day get a new credit card to improve my credit a bit more becuase strangely enough having a CC and paying it off on time does improve ya Credit rating overtime. i think the main thing we have to realize and acknowledge  is that we need to make sure we can afford purchases and not jump the gun so to speak on items we othewise know we dont need or cant afford to pay off in a timely fashion.  but in the end we all have a choice, we have the responsibility to guide ourselves properly. some people unfortunately dont and its a sad state of events when a person goes into major debt ($5,000-$10,000+) but they have no one to blame butthemselves.

I really don't get people.  "OMG, Blizzard has a credit card, the evil money-humping goons."  First, if you're in debt, it's your own fault for spending money you don't have.  Secondly, if you're using your credit card to pay lots of bills, or to purchase your WoW every month, then you're earning free WoW just by doing the things you normally do.  Credit cards and capitalism aren't evil, but a lack of intelligence is, and unfortunately, that's what gets people into debt most of the time.  Now, I just wish that card existed in Canada. :P

Tell that to Discover card.  They got in bit of hot water becuase of thier issuing practices back in the late 90's or so.  They used to give a credit card to anyone that going to college or planned on going.  All those kids ran up quite a debt, and Discover knew they would.  Unfortunetly for some of those kids life doesn't always work out the way you plan and a lot of them couldn't repay the debt they accumulated.

A lot of 18 year olds aren't as responcible as they should be; nothing new there.

Simply handing out a credit card to any Tom, Dick, and Harry isn't very responsible on the issuers part.  I don't see anything wrong with as long as they don't intend to simply give a card to anyone 18+ with an active WoW sub, and I dought they will.

Gotta hand it to Blizzard.  They've become masters at making money.

I don't understand what the controversy is about.  I'm a responsible adult who can choose to have my game time paid every month by using this credit card.  As a responsible adult, I would choose to pay my balance, in full, every month.  I get to do something for free that I'd otherwise have to pay for.  And, I wouldn't be spending any more money than I'd spend if I was using another credit card.

What's the problem?

Well, the problem is that some people are not responsible and that some people like to complain and think that corporations are out to get you.  And, I'm sorry, but just because an 18 year old is not responsible is no reason to keep others from participating in a good deal.  I hate the idea of someone trying to "protect" those who can't think for themselves.  Not my problem.  (Hey, I was 18 once, I did get into debt, but I got out of it.  I don't blame the credit card companies, I blame myself...it's called free will and responsibility.)

Well, I have neither one of those problems.  This is a win win situation for someone such as myself.

Disclaimer:  I actually am not going to be getting this card because I have another one that helps pay off my mortgage.  But, if I didn't have that one, I'd get the WoW one, no doubt about it.

another thing that is making me question existence...how did they think of this?...it seams Blizzard does everything with the best of intentions. They listen to players feed back decently, and fix what they can in patches. Star Craft was beyond kick ass and still is, they halted production of Star Craft: Ghost; because it was to similar to splinter cell(or another various type game), than they recalled it all together to re-think producing it on a next gen(at least thats what i think went down). maybe that actually had the best of intentions with trying to think of a way to help people not have to pay so much. and figured a *credit card* was a fun way for people to get a little extra help with the monthly payment...

but than, if they really wanted to be nice guys, they could just lower the monthly payment down to $10 a month for like...3 months. i mean, in one month they make more than most a majority of MMO's make in 3 months...
