I am hoping that the game gets heavily optimized in the next few weeks as it is currently very sluggish on my system

Win XP SP2
AMD X2 3800
Ati X800GTO2 256mb
2GB DDR3200 memory
150GB spare space on HD (Sata2 7200)

running at  1280x1024 running at balanced can be very sluggish. Lowering the settings helps a little. The game certainly looks good but it EQ2 ran much better on my older system just before release (and that was considered sluggish at the time) and frankly was more pleasing to the eye.

I just hope they have lots of patching planned from now to release.

Now that the NDA is up, I can officially say that this game has been running like crap since beta started. I can't believe we're maybe what, 1 or 2 months away from release and it STILL runs like crap. EQ2 runs better!

This seems to imply that people without pre-orders can join.

Anyone know how to get such a beta key??

Non-US people can get a key from he fileplanet site by using a US-proxy like one from the codeen network: 128.112.139.80 port: 3128. Tho the proxy wont let you go to the last page, just disable the proxy to get past the last link and get your key.

So go to this page using the proxy: http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/vanguardbeta/landing.aspx
and before you press the link "continue to get your key" disable the proxy and your through with your own connection.

Another crock of shit, SOE really wants their name to be murdered in every possible way shape and form. I'm sure the idea of giving "Open Beta" to fileplanet subscribers only has already lost SOE business from pissed of players. I'm not paying a cover charge to play an "Closed to Fileplanet Beta" just like I'm sure many of you others won't. For the ones that do, you are the reason why SOE pulls this shit, they know they can fuck you over and still you will come crawling back.

That and it's not going to do a damn thing to their sales. WoW did the same thing. It's just good, sound business for both FP and MMO publishers. MMO devs get a hot and FP gets more subs.

17.057.00mb after installed , but sertenly not complaining, need to get use at some elements of the game, it really looks better then i thought (seen the video's and didn't really liked them) but playing it for real makes a difference, crowded places are abit laggy when entering a building with many people inside but other then that the game runs really smooth, i think the character creation is awesome the real mmorpg crowed will be very pleased, beginning quest are abit easy but still fun to do i really like the beta system they have setup in game that when completing a quest you need to fill in a form and some feedback right on the spot, for me this was my first experiance in a well thought out beta setup  to that, gameplay feels familiar so far nothing that made me go ...ermmm..WOW?  surrounding are very rich and detailed not overdone like i think EQ2 is.

Overall i have  good experiance with the game..now lets see what's ahead

You are right i think you need a high end system to play the game decent, i hear mostly people debatting ingame about what card or system they are running and allot of complains about lag, like i said i experiance some lag when entering a busy crowded building but nothing different then i exp. in other games aswel sometimes. Wel lets see what vangaurd will bring me today :)

This game performas horribly bad and I have a mid range system. I can play alot of games with little or no problems like BF 2142 and Oblibvion. Only way I can play this game is to turn down all the effects. What good is that ? With all of it turned down it looks like EQ all over again. Theres no way im goin to spend another $300 - $1000 to play a game.  The game has alot of promise but the performance of the game is way bad. For a majority out there this game with be unplayable. I cant see release being any better really.

For those of you that have been wondering what the beta is like, here is a brief summary based on my experience:
Note: unless you have 2.6+ ghz cpu, 1+ gb ram and geforce 6000+ graphics, don't waste your time as it won't be playable.
1) 6.5 GB download (plan on letting it run overnight).
2) unpacks to 17+ BG after install (should have 30 gb free for temp files).
3) about 100 mb of patching (up to an hour)
4) unless you have a high-end graphics card, turn down all the graphic settings.
5) nice downloadable user manual (read it so you won't get lost).
6) good selection of races and classes to choose from.
7) decent character appearance selection, but I've seen better.
8) typical UI and controls (WASD movement).
9) variety of different starting areas based on race.
10) nice progression of starter quests (like WoW).
11) advances are skill based but with level restrictions.
12) 2 harvesting skills can be chosen per character.
13) only 1 crafting skill per character, but lots of depth.
14) unique diplomacy system that affect other area of play.
15) lots of lag when the servers are loaded.
16) spawn rates don't scale with high player density (mob camping).
17) frequent server crashes (at least every hour so)
18) periodic client crash to desktop.
19) frequent game patches (daily or better).
20) it can be hard to find things (lots of yells of 'where is ...')
Summary: This is a vary large and resource demanding game which looks very nice graphicly if you have a powerful card.  There is lots of things to appeal to different play styles, but still needs balancing.  The game is NOT ready to be released soon, but should be a great game once its debugged and polished.

"Unfortunately, between the pre-promotion of the program and its launch this evening, we had to restrict access to U.S./Canadian residents only. However, since you signed up before the restriction, we're going to set aside some keys and make sure you get one."

Two hours after recieving this mail i got the key
