EVE Online News - New PCU

Posted by Jon Wood on Dec 05, 2006  | 13 comments in our forums

It's been a while since we've heard from them on this, but EVE Online has just announced that they have a new Peak Concurrent User record of 32,955 which was set on December 3rd.

A New PCU Record - Close to 33,000 Users

A new peak concurrent user record was set Sunday, Dec 3rd when 32,955 users were logged into EVE Online: Revelations. This would not be that significant if not for the outstanding performance the Tranquility server demonstrated under this enormous load.

yeah, you're right...  every goddamn game has 33000 players on ONE server online at the same time.

I mean, just look at WoW. I just need to go to the Tauren city and there are 33000 players runnign around, right?

or the massive PvP on Dark Age of Camelot...  with 33000 players on one server, that game is a hell of a lot of fun, right?

because, you know, you always see new people. because you can chat, trade, meet with every player who plays WoW or DAoC on ONE freaking server, right?  isn't that awsome?

thirtythreethousand!!! man, I love those games. that's why WoW, DAoC, CoH and all that have a completely player controlled economy, player controlled areas (70%+ of the game) and so on.  with 33000 players it is easy to have that. there are always people trading and selling and producing.

EVE on the other hand, only has 1 freaking auction house in one space station. if you want to buy and sell, you NEED to go to that place. in WoW, everyone can buy stuff right where they stand. it's because WoW doesnt have to create the illusion of a breathing world with thousands of players by forcing them to 1 or 2 places where they can do business.

I love WoW.

sarcasm off

EVE just had the biggest expansion they ever did released. often new code leads to more problems. the news told the informed surfer that this was nmot the case here.

AND:                                 it's 33000 people at the same time on  O N E   server. not all subscribers, not all players , not all characters. WoW and all the other crap can manage MAYBE a tenth of that. then they crash.

Props to CCP.  Ever Upward with the concurrent users.  I'm betting they reach 40,000 concurrent players after revelations III is released.

Great job.

They'll likely hit that by summer, which is when Rev II is due. so between then and now we have 6'ish months worth of time for optimizations.

This may not be the most enjoyable MMO in terms of fun but it is the only one that actually feels like another world. Having such a huge amount of players all interacting together creates just that more immersion.

uh?

"not" the most enjoyable yet it surpasses anything created in the terms of concurrent users in an online gaming environemt?  "if" it were "not" the most enjoyable you wouldn't have a fraction of that.

Apparently EVE *IS* one of the most enjoyable MMO's ever released otherwise you wouldn't see this happening.

Aren't WoW's servers capped at 1500 users?  Would fans of WoW be thrilled if there were only 20 servers although their were maxed out and full preventing them to login?  I think was a reality early in its history.

StarWars Galaxies had a concurent user limit of 3500 on Bria?  The other servers had less, reportedly around 1000-2000. What would fans of SWG think if there were 10 full Bria servers?

EVE Online is a great game.  It is one of the best I've ever played.  The only thing I think was better would be pre-cu SWG.

CCP knows how to facilitate sucess!

Boy you are so WRONG.  Most  stations  have  a market an that market is region wide.  You can dock at almost any station and find a market.  There IS NOT one AH on one station.  You must not play Eve at all.

He was being sarcastic, go back and read his post a little more slowly.

It was clearly sarcasm to me. Or maybe it was the first line of Askatan's sig that confirmed my suspicions.

While I won't go so far as to say EVE is the best game EVAR, I will say that it's a very good game. The new player enhancements they brought out with Revelations I were great and should help them to convert more free trials to paid subscriptions. But more than anything else, I like EVE because, like Anarchy Online, it proved that an MMO doesn't have to do gangbusters business on day 1 of release in order to be successful. That lesson, more than any other, may help future MMOs get to the release stage. I liken it to movies that don't do record numbers opening night. Nowadays, investors know that DVD sales can give them a second chance at recouping their outlay, which helps to get smaller, less mainstream films made and released (Hustle & Flow, Snakes on a Plane, etc).

So kudos to CCP! Keep on keepin' on!

Eve is technologically most advanced game serverwise atleast, with hundreds of players on pvp in both sides same time it creates most challenging athmosphere and makes you hope your fleet captain knows what he's doing.

only department it really lacks any is pve...after youve fought one npc, youve fought em all

I agree the PVe lacks alittle.  Then the really challanging rats are in 0.0.  Do a few triple 1.8 rats (meaning 1.8 million isk bounty)  and you might change your mind.

offtopic: iam so glad SOE isnt involved in any CCP productions. since everquest 2 is SOE for me one of the badest mmo companys out there. they patched everquest 2 and SWG in the dead ("casual player friendly"), and iam sure they do the same with vanguard and gods & heroes. i know they are "only" the publishers for both games, but hey they want make sure that you can see: it`s a SOE. iam in the vanguard b.ta and already today i know i dont want play this game.
