EverQuest II News - Curt Schilling and Fundraising

Posted by Jon Wood on May 24, 2006  | 4 comments in our forums

SOE has announced a rather interesting event involving Curt Schilling as a character in-game, and fund raising for the ALS Association (ALS is also known as Lou Gherig's Disease):

CURT SCHILLING ENTERS A WORLD OF FANTASY DURING RED SOX-YANKEES SERIES JUNE 5, 6, 7

World Series MVP Debuts in the Virtual World of EverQuest II As an Evil Villain and Helps to Raise Money for ALS Association

SAN DIEGO, CA – May 24, 2006 – Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a global leader in the online video games industry, today announced that Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is about to debut in his favorite online video game, EverQuest II, as an epically awesome, loot-dropping virtual bad guy who battles unwary players. And it’s all for a good cause.

Schilling’s video game character will reside within the online world of EverQuest II (EQII) for three days during the Yankees vs. Red Sox baseball series June 5, 6 and 7, 2006 at Yankee Stadium. During this time, anyone can register for and log into EverQuest II at www.battleals.com to challenge the evil Schilling character, appropriately named “Curt Schilling.”

Every time a player defeats the virtual Schilling character, Sony Online Entertainment, creators of EverQuest II, will make a donation of $5 dollars (up to a maximum of $10,000) to the ALS Association, which assists patients with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. After the three-day baseball series, Curt’s character will remain within the game as a high-powered enemy that characters will have to face later in the game. At the launch of the campaign on June 5th, Schilling’s 10-year-old son, Gehrig (named after the legendary Yankee first baseman), will be one of the first to battle his virtual dad in-game.

#1 - I love a good cause.

#2 - Gaming + charity is a wonderful combination.

#3 - While this breaks immersion TREMENDOUSLY, I can understand this as a necessary evil in getting attention called to the cause...  however:

#4 - This also doubles as a Public Relations stunt for a game that isn't doing so hot, in case you didn't figure that out on your own.

#5 - SOE is detestable for bringing far too much real life into their role-playing games.  /pizza, Exchange $ervers, and now this.  Next thing you know, celebrities and movie villains will be implemented for future causes.

Buy bigger boobs (male characters can give the gift of cleavage to a female friend for the same effect) at Dolly's "A Whole Lot Goin' On Upstairs" shop for a $5 donation to breast cancer research!

Chase down Lance Armstrong for a $5 Cancer Research Institute donation!

Duel Jackie Chan for a hefty $15 donation to English Teachers Abroad.

Seriously, they could have brought in an old-school god or dragon or other big boss and said that was the target for donations.  If the boss were advertised well enough, then you'd have people lined up who didn't even know that they were making a contribution to charity right beside those that only come to help the cause.  Putting a real life baseball player in the game is just stupid.
