One of the things that I feel sets MMORPGs apart fromt he rest of gamedom is the interactivity, not only on a daily basis with the other players, but also with the game itself in the form of Live Events. EverQuest II recently released a look back at some of their own Live Events:
|
EverQuest II is a constantly evolving world. Many of you already know that we regularly run Live Events that are often dynamic in nature and can permanently alter the world of Norrath. We thought we would compile some information on the many Live Events we've had so far in EQII. So, without further ado, we give you EverQuest II Live Events!
Erollisi Day (February 2005) The festival that honors the Queen of Love, Erollisi Marr, is nearly upon us! Seek out members of the Swornlove family, who need your help to celebrate this day of love and friendship. Aaronolis is found on the bridge outside the North Qeynos gates, and Annalisa is found outside the West Freeport gates near the towers. Lend them a hand and you will have a charming holiday!
The Plague (April 2005) Reports indicate that a mysterious ailment has begun infecting Norrath's citizens. According to our sources, both the Overlord and Antonia Bayle believe finding a cure for this plague to be the top priority of every citizen. Although the source of this disease remains unknown, it is believed that only the joint efforts of adventurers and artisans will be able to cure the people of Norrath. Opportunistic individuals may be trying to take advantage of the sick by offering supposed cures for sale at high prices. |

Well then the term "live event" has taken on a whole new meaning. I would have called those automated events, but hardly live.
Live events used to mean something in the earlier years of Everquest I, where a gm would grab some people and throw on a REAL live event with staff there orchestrating it. This is nothing but more spin for SOE to get some publicity for EQ II. Not to mention Erollsi day was HORRIBLE and the plague was boring and hardly invasion on the game at all.
I would really like to know how these are considered live events by the staff at MMORPG.COM.
Please explain what you think is a live event. Sorry but having a group or two that is run through some lame adventure does not make for a live event.
On the other hand we have the entire server being able to take part in the events.
EQ1 "events" sucked and generally resulted in the server crashing. If not it basically allowed a single group of people to get some insanely nice item that no one else could.

Server crashing? Sucked? Single group of people? Do you have any clue as to what you are saying? Either you weren't really there and are guessing or you have a very selective memory.
A live event means it was LIVE. There was staff there making it happen, orchestrating it. It doesn't mean only one group of people got it, or 1 person ran it or any other wierd twist you want to add to make it sound bad.
When you actually have something valid try again, your current arguement isn't even accurate let alone debatable.
Although feel free to explain how a quest line that only exhist at certain times of the year or any other time frame are considered a "live" event.
I would have to agree...a live event is not a static quest that is added then later removed from the game. Heck, if that were the case, there are a LOT more live events than what is listed.
A live event would be something going on, run by a DM type person, where the response to your in-game actions would be immediately met with something "unique" by the environment. NOT something that is going to be the same no matter how many different characters I run through it.
And to call the Froglok "quest" a live event is really absurd since it wasn't even in the game properly when the players were told it was.
Perhaps if the devs would focus on broken content instead of tooting their own horn trying to one up the Jones (read WoW), they wouldn't have to toot their own horn to try and woo subscribers from other games!
