EVE Online News - Jumping En Masse Issue Resolved

Posted by Suzie Ford on Sep 10, 2010  | 21 comments in our forums

EVE Online developer "GingerDude" has penned a new article related the on-going series about fixing lag on the official site. Titled "fixing lag: well, this one doesn't really...", the article discusses the massive wait times players were experiencing when jumping en-masse into highly loaded systems. Devs worked through the issue and quietly released the code onto servers and....nothing blew up!

When nothing blew up, we left it enabled on fleet fight nodes, followed by staggered deployment to Jita and mission hubs and finally making it the default way to do things on the 29th of July.

Now, much tighter locks don't lighten the load on the server at all.  The same amount of work still needs to happen for any given jump; we're just mixing the tasks up better so it's fair to those wanting in on it. In effect it means that someone else blocks you a lot shorter when you jump, which means you get added to the fight at the other end sooner allowing you, dear pilot, to activate your modules and drones and whatnot and thus actually adding to the existing load and increasing the existing lag.

Check out the full article on the EVE Dev Blog.

In short, they discovered some problems in the hand off between servers when you fleet jump and implemented a fix.  I believe they also implemented this same code when you jump into Jita.  The writing style is poor which does not help considering how technical the explanation is.

I did not grasp their reasoning why they have to put your ship into the new system without waiting for you to have control of it, but I guess there are some ways for people to exploit it if they did not.

Sometimes reading these blogs is cruel and unusual punishment.

All in all, they are continue to address the lag problem and you should not expect major improvements in the near future.  I think that it will probably take new hardware and software changes to actually achieve a major break through in this area.

"This is necessary because there is no reliable way of distinguishing between a disconnect, a cheat or lag.  We cannot have pilots in-between systems, and we can't reliably back out of the operation at this point; it's simply too late."

Exactly, instead of giving the customer the benefit of doubt, they take the worst case scenario for the customer.  Like I expressed, their logic eludes me.  Have to admit my position on this is a bit jaded as I have lost a lot of ships because of this design decision.  No more helpless feeling when you have zero control of a situation.

Its too hard to prevent the server to materialize your ship if your client hasn't "connected", heck, older games that just didn't spawn your ship in hostile space when u "crashed" while warping/zoning/etc were all flukes or had genious in their coding teams...

Nah, preventing those easy kills would make the "PvP"'ers go on a emo rampage... and we all know to which comunity CCP bends over

Guilty until proven innocent... Sad observation, but all too realistic given their experience with a certain section of the general player base.  I suspect their shardless system is bringing them into conflict with what is possible at this technology level.  Even bleeding edge hardware and brilliant software design will only gain one a certain capacity. Beyond that lurks the dreaded Lag Monster.

Only true up to a certain point. That point being when such pandering starts to threaten their business model. Look at the evolution of Concord and the high sec rule set. You do remember all of the banshee howls and wails from the gankers and griefers over that?  "Its the END OF EVE!!!!1111!!!"  "The damn CareBears are ruining the game!!!!111!!" and all of the related nonsense.  Make no mistake CCP *IS* PvP centric. But they also have a *keen* sense of  what benefits their business model, and what doesn't.

I've been on when more than 50K people have been on.  A brower game isn't going to stress its servers nearly as much as EvE does. Not to mention the difference in complexity.

Yea.....and how will you have them make money? Item shop? Seriously, you get expansions for free I think that justifies the payment model. Especially when you can essentially play for free by paying with in-game money.

If you cant have people between "systems" then create an intermediate transfer stage. Problem solved.

Jump out of system A into a warp tunnel.

Stay in warp tunnel until transfer into system B is aproved by the server

Jump into system B.

If the transfer fails for whatever reason reroute player to nearby system or some other lore apropriate zone.

That way your not a sitting duck at either end of the warp sequence and the server still known were you are. Plus you dont need to stare at a semi blank screen with a loading box in the middle every time you need to jump.

Jita is a special case. Its on its own dedicated hardware, and even with that. on weekends during prime time, its still The Devil.  I'd continue to route around it.

Come on, he makes a very obvious point and all we get is "lol nub",  You just reinforce what he said.   Why even bother to post on a board where you don't grasp half of what is being said?

So, just what obvious point did they make? That browser games aren't as resource intense as EvE's client/server suite?  Not to mention the vast difference in the games complexity.  CCP doesn't need to make EVE F2P, as their current business model works just fine for them.

EVE already has a F2P option. About 20% of accounts in EVE are supported by PLEX. Do one reasonably good 10/10 with a friend (takes an hour or so) and you can generally pay for 2 accounts for 2 months with the loot. Or spend a solid evening grinding sanctums, make 300M ISK, buy PLEX, play for free for a month. There's nothing difficult or unreasonable about it.
