Just out of PAX: ArenaNet has confirmed that it is working on a companion application for Smart Phones and iPad. The app isn't finished yet but long strides have been made. With the app, players can follow their friends on the map, check in-game email, move their own characters around the map and more. Developers have indicated that the project isn't finished and they have even more astonishing information to reveal over time. We'll keep you posted!

Sounds good to me. Something I would use for sure.
dammit now i need to get an ipad or smartphone...
Yup, time to get an Ipad.
lol
finally, a rock solid reason for work to buy me a smartphone
I already play Pocket Legends 3D MMO on my iPhone, which is staggering enough level of quality, but Ye Gods! what are ArenaNet trying to do with their GW2 App ?!!
You'll also be able to access remotely the auction house, add friends, chat with guildies and friends and track their movement and actions in real-time are just some of the features. All can be done offline. The app will be available for Guild Wars 2 players for free.

and this will be a free app... take that blizzard!
Anyone notice how they also have hinted at a Auction House in-game as well?
They mentioned they will have a marketplace a while back in some interviews.
hmm would like to see they giving more attention to more important things rather to some fluffy app, or at least "well we finished everything that really maters, now we will dedicate our attention to some fluffy BS as we are near the game launch date" ¬¬
How would moving your character around the map work?
Just to waypoints or just full on walk!
I can see a problem with the full on walk.
Actually this stuff encompasses the browser based ingame chat and auction house which is a great addition for the community and is very useful for strengthening bonds with friends made in-game.
The app itself may not be particularily important but the whole "extended experience" section of the game is.
Well, we all knew that ArenaNet's subscription-free philosophy means they have to find other ways to bring in revenue. This app is the perfect opportunity for ArenaNet to get that extra pocket change from players by providing an additional out-of-game servi--
The app will be available for Guild Wars 2 players for free.
Oh.
It's almost like A-Net doesn't want to make money, at least they're asking for a monthly sub for it... dam those spineless money grabbing activision blizzard. I'm sure they'd rob their own grandma if given the chance.
A-Net's app is probably giving a lot more features yet it's free and their charging a freaking monthly sub for it. I'm tempted to never buy another blizzard product again.
Good will goes a LONG way to creating and maintaining good customers. I've purchased every Guild Wars expansion because of the great customer experience I had with the original GW. And, because of that, I wil be buying GW2 and would have even without all the ULTRA COOL AND GROOVY stuff that's going to be included. :)
Just when I started to think mmorpg.com staff had no taste in mmos :P
Once you get to a "waypoint" it is unlocked. These "waypoints" are all over the world map and quests will lead you to them one by one. Once you unlock one then you can simply open up your map and click on a valid waypoint and you will be transported to that location. If you have played Guild Wars then it will be pretty much the same as in Guild Wars 2. There is also a video that shows a developer using the map to transport his character to another location.
oh no....

Just wait until the game is out before you start ragging...geeeeez...give me a friggin' brake *rolls eyes*
Lol, A-Net are really showing Blizzard up as the lazy money-grabbers they are... What better way to compete with Blizzard than to offer a similar or better service for a lower cost (i.e. free)! Now let's just hope the game itself lives up to expectations...
Of COURSE there's going to be an auction house of some sort....it's an MMO. O.o All modern day MMOs have some sort of broker or auction house. Even the free to play games like Perfect World and RoM do. Still...in f2p games that let you set up those stupid booths to sell in the cities and stuff....a lot of people choose that route, but I don't even remember the last time I played an MMO....well maybe Ultimea Online...where there wasn't a broker or auction house.....
The app itself may not be particularily important but the whole "extended experience" section of the game is.
I totally agree! Little things like this make the game even more interesting... many many ways to play the game and many many reasons to stay playing.
If you really want to give them support Buy Guild Wars merchandise! http://www.guildwars.com/products/extras/gearstore/default.php
Though they recently took a survey on what kind of merchandise players are interested in, so I expect to see some cool new products for them to offer soon.
Arena Net gives to players so show your support and give back to them. Not only do they not charge a monthly fee, and give you free apps.. with Guild wars 1 they had tourneys where they gave out FREE STUFF!@!
Yes, that is right, they gave out ipods, video cards, computers... was awesome!
heck ANET even gives out their fantastic Art Books and Ghosts of Ascalon novels FOR FREE in comiccon,. gamescom and PAX
You're absolutely right, when a company goes out of its way to make you the customer feel good about its product you aren't going to think twice about supporting them in return.
It's always been clear that Anet think community is important and with GW2 they are taking it even further: Dynamic Events that means groups can develop organically, ability to switch servers to find the community that best suits you, access to guild chat and auction houses via the web and now phone apps that add another bridge to community. It's almost too good to be true, i didn't think they could do much more to impress me but here I am impressed yet again.
I see the next step : paid services in this app. Want to move a character from waypoint A to waypoint B ? That will be US$ 0,50 , please ....
Wow, such an amazing psychic ability you possess there. You should charge for your services...you know, like ArenaNet supposedly are going to.
Anyway, yet another great move by ArenaNet. Might I add: a completely unexpected one too! What I loved about World of Warcraft was that I felt a part of something. Outside of the game there were countless resources at my disposal, and having something like this for Guild Wars 2 from ArenaNet themselves will go a long way towards making me feel the same way about the game as I did with WoW.
And it's free!
Even if Anet charged a modest fee for the app (and I used it)... I would pay.
I don't know how anyone can complain about paying for "extra" perks (that does not effect gameplay) when you do not have to pay a monthly fee.
In fact, I wouldnt blame them if they came out with an app and some features would be free, and others you would have to pay for.
With World of Warcraft, not only do you pay $14.95 a month for the game, you also have to pay a MONTHLY fee for using all the features of their auction app.
If what they say this app will do... I will get it (make sure you make it for ANDROID too!).
No need to buy a "waypoint" from them, people in game will run you to some "hub waypoints" for a nominal in game fee. However, if there was a small nominal charge to unlock all the waypoints on the map... I would give serious consideration in buying that option. :)
I don't think that would be possible since the waypoints are persistant.
Seriously, I don't understand how these guys have any money left, they give so much to the customers.
Makes me realize how much the "other guys" are padding their pockets.
Yup, I'm also astonished at the level of service they are providing with this app and their game... at no monthly fee.
Not to mention this app still has unannounced features.
Could it be that A'Net is influenced by Icarus "Fallen Earth" ? http://www.fallenearth.com/node/256
Anyway regardless I think it's a great idea to have these type of Apps to the MMORPG's we play, could make us gamers even more involved with it.
Nice idea and all, and it's great to see ANet are trying to think outside the box.. But once i've turned off the computer and left the house/office to go out, the last thing I want to do is think about a game character. Even though I own a smartphone I doubt i'll use it.
Like I say though, kudos to ANet for trying new things.
Well it'll be a good gain of time for casual players, if i can move a char before going back home to play in the evening, it'll be that much gametime won.
Now, it'll all depend what'll make me come back to the game over n over. They doin a lotta unusual thingies with GW2, just hoping it'll go the right way; at least can't blame em for not tryin'.
Duuuuude what are you talking about?? MMO's are for all intent and purposes are social networks just in a game format...so please get off your "social" high-horse, and relax...and besides what does having an app for your "smart" phone have to do with social networking??
This rather amuses me, I don't buy Apple products, I don't like others deciding what is appropriate for me and their prices are ridiculous anyways.
While this is a cute addition, I don't find it enhancing the game much.
You might use it if you are broken down on the side of the road bored out of your mind waiting for a tow truck.
lol there's aleays one. *shakes head*
so I can stalk people offline? awesome. (joking..) Very nice idea.
