Guild Wars 2 News - ArenaNet Working on Companion App

Posted by Suzie Ford on Sep 03, 2010  | 46 comments in our forums

Just out of PAX: ArenaNet has confirmed that it is working on a companion application for Smart Phones and iPad. The app isn't finished yet but long strides have been made. With the app, players can follow their friends on the map, check in-game email, move their own characters around the map and more. Developers have indicated that the project isn't finished and they have even more astonishing information to reveal over time. We'll keep you posted!

You'll also be able to access remotely the auction house, add friends, chat with guildies and friends and track their movement and actions in real-time are just some of the features. All can be done offline. The app will be available for Guild Wars 2 players for free.

They mentioned they will have a marketplace a while back in some interviews.

Actually this stuff encompasses the browser based ingame chat and auction house which is a great addition for the community and is very useful for strengthening bonds with friends made in-game.

The app itself may not be particularily important but the whole "extended experience" section of the game is.

Oh.

It's almost like A-Net doesn't want to make money, at least they're asking for a monthly sub for it... dam those spineless money grabbing activision blizzard. I'm sure they'd rob their own grandma if given the chance.

A-Net's app is probably giving a lot more features yet it's free and their charging a freaking monthly sub for it. I'm tempted to never buy another blizzard product again.

Once you get to a "waypoint" it is unlocked.  These "waypoints" are all over the world map and quests will lead you to them one by one.  Once you unlock one then you can simply open up your map and click on a valid waypoint and you will be transported to that location.  If you have played Guild Wars then it will be pretty much the same as in Guild Wars 2.  There is also a video that shows a developer using the map to transport his character to another location.

Lol, A-Net are really showing Blizzard up as the lazy money-grabbers they are... What better way to compete with Blizzard than to offer a similar or better service for a lower cost (i.e. free)! Now let's just hope the game itself lives up to expectations...

Of COURSE there's going to be an auction house of some sort....it's an MMO.  O.o     All modern day MMOs have some sort of broker or auction house.  Even the free to play games like Perfect World and RoM do.  Still...in f2p games that let you set up those stupid booths to sell in the cities and stuff....a lot of people choose that route, but I don't even remember the last time I played an MMO....well maybe Ultimea Online...where there wasn't a broker or auction house.....

If you really want to give them support Buy Guild Wars merchandise! http://www.guildwars.com/products/extras/gearstore/default.php

Though they recently took a survey on what kind of merchandise players are interested in, so I expect to see some cool new products for them to offer soon.

Arena Net gives to players so show your support and give back to them. Not only do they not charge a monthly fee, and give you free apps.. with Guild wars 1 they had tourneys where they gave out FREE STUFF!@!

Yes, that is right, they gave out ipods, video cards, computers... was awesome!

You're absolutely right, when a company goes out of its way to make you the customer feel good about its product you aren't going to think twice about supporting them in return.

It's always been clear that Anet think community is important and with GW2 they are taking it even further: Dynamic Events that means groups can develop organically, ability to switch servers to find the community that best suits you, access to guild chat and auction houses  via the web and now phone apps that add another bridge to community. It's almost too good to be true, i didn't think they could do much more to impress me but here I am impressed yet again.

Wow, such an amazing psychic ability you possess there. You should charge for your services...you know, like ArenaNet supposedly are going to.

Anyway, yet another great move by ArenaNet. Might I add: a completely unexpected one too! What I loved about World of Warcraft was that I felt a part of something. Outside of the game there were countless resources at my disposal, and having something like this for Guild Wars 2 from ArenaNet themselves will go a long way towards making me feel the same way about the game as I did with WoW.

And it's free!

Even if Anet charged a modest fee for the app (and I used it)... I would pay.

I don't know how anyone can complain about paying for "extra" perks (that does not effect gameplay) when you do not have to pay a monthly fee.

In fact, I wouldnt blame them if they came out with an app and some features would be free, and others you would have to pay for.

With World of Warcraft, not only do you pay $14.95 a month for the game, you also have to pay a MONTHLY fee for using all the features of their auction app.

If what they say this app will do... I will get it (make sure you make it for ANDROID too!).

No need to buy a "waypoint" from them, people in game will run you to some "hub waypoints" for a nominal in game fee.  However, if there was a small nominal charge to unlock all the waypoints on the map... I would give serious consideration in buying that option. :)

I don't think that would be possible since the waypoints are persistant.

Yup, I'm also astonished at the level of service they are providing with this app and their game... at no monthly fee.

Not to mention this app still has unannounced features.

Do we have to have social networking contaminating our MMO’s? For those of you who think this is a good idea, you do realise where this is going? It is aimed at the social networking community, trying to get those not interested in gaming to see MMO’s as an extension of social networking.

The app will certainly be available in a limited format to all those on the social network. If they do cross over to MMO’s they will not bring a gaming ethos with them. They are not gamers; they will want games which emphasise graphics and communications. Game play will only be a tertiary consideration to them. FFS these are the idiots who play Farmville and think its good.

Duuuuude what are you talking about??  MMO's are for all intent and purposes are social networks just in a game format...so please get off your "social" high-horse, and relax...and besides what does having an app for your "smart" phone have to do with social networking??
