Star Wars: The Old Republic News - Nar Shaddaa: Smuggler's Moon Revealed

Posted by Suzie Ford on Jul 30, 2010  | 33 comments in our forums

Star Wars: The Old Republic will feature many explorable planets. Devs have revealed the latest, Nar Shaddaa, also known as the Smuggler's Moon. Nar Shaddaa is a tough place where the black market rules and everything comes at a premium.

The bowels of Nar Shaddaa hide some of the galaxy’s darkest secrets. In the pursuit of advanced technologies, unscrupulous enterprises conduct hazardous experiments on unwilling test subjects and crime lords employ slaves as fodder on industrial assembly lines. Fugitives hide from the law after committing heinous crimes, and prisoners who’ve vanished from all over the galaxy are held in anonymous and inescapable private prisons. Criminal enterprises beyond Hutt control compete for power, as well – foremost among them the Exchange syndicate, the Hutt Cartel's only genuine rival. While the upper levels of Nar Shaddaa may be one of the most desirable places to visit in the galaxy, the moon’s lower levels are a place which anyone in their right mind would avoid at all costs.

Read more about Nar Shaddaa and check out a fly through video of the Smuggler's Moon.

I mean, this is greta and all. But in typical Bioware fashion I'm rather certain its going to be like the big beautiful city-world from Mass Effect 2.

Meaning, like Zero, explorability.

As i wrote a dozen times before replying to posts like yours, instead of assuming things invest some time on TOR's website. You can find usefull info there like the one stating that the planets will be almost fully explorable (90% or so).

A world built entirely over by a city will be 90% Explorable?

I wish I had your blind faith.

It's not about faith, its about seeking the info. http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/making-coruscant

It's a 6 min video. I think it will answer some of your questions.

A nice video. I've seen it before.

Look, Coruscant is my favorite planet. It has been since I was a kid. I used to stare at Ralph Mcquarrie's concept pantings as a kid and day dream about how life must be on a world like that.  To be able to explore it is a very amazing concept for me even now, decades later. (even in the far inferior timeline as the KOTOR era)

But nothing in that video said "90% explorable".

Maybe it'll be great, maybe it won't. Based on my extensive experience with Bioware games... their enviroments are far from great, and no more enjoyable than a stage with a shoddy set-design.

I can understand both sides. So far Bioware environments were small. But then, the Old Forest in Breeland of LOTRO is small, but the design makes it feel like an endless maze by the art of placement and design.

And then, if you had Coruscant as a place of dreams (and I know I had too), you have too high a measure. NO video game can EVER be as large as our imagination.

Still, I am open to be positive surprised and try to be in a balance between skepticism and looking forward for good stuff.

Ten Ton Hammer interviews James Ohlen, TOR's creative director.

Quote #1

James: Our game is very open. We’ve developed several worlds, and each of those worlds is wide open, huge worlds with many square kilometers and you’re able to explore those worlds any way you want, just like your standard MMOG.
Quote #2

James: Just like I was talking about earlier, these worlds are huge public spaces. When you go to the world of Coruscant or Tatooine, you’re going to have a huge world to explore with many square kilometers and it is all public space.

As said before, the info is out there for everyone interested to find it.

I just hope with so so many planets that they sort of find a way to allow a lot of people per server, so that the world isnt a large void.  But glad to see more added to the game, looking forward to this MMO.

frankly bioware hasn't been famous for huge explorable areas in theri games, and in an mmo setting if they are going to preserve game stability i doubt all of courscant is going to be accessible to everyone at launch.   i really want to believe this will be the mmo swg was supposed to be but lets be honest it won't be.

It will probably be as explorable as WoW is, there are many places in the cities that you just can't explore, or being able to swim from 1 continent to the other without dying of fatigue.

Nothing I've read has lead me to believe the game will have an over abundance of invisble walls to stop me from exploring, though if I'm wrong could someone pls post the link.

They had a few invisible walls in KOTOR, but they may have come a long way since then.

The substance of threads like these is exactly why I wish Bioware had gone with one of their own IP's instead of this one..

IP's like Star Trek and Star Wars are too vibrant in the minds of fans to receive a fair chance as an MMO... Fans of the IP invariably play them and the game then gets judged by it's limitations rather than by its' actual content.

If you can only explore 50% of this world, it's literally 50% more than you could 2 months ago when the world wasn't announced for play.

My big hope is that they will have many many planets to explore and not all of them (or even most) need to be Iconic Star Wars.

So many nay-sayers(sp?)! But this makes me happy. And not really because I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I was, when I was younger- there's always going to be that spark of interest for vicariously living the star wars life I always wished I had when I was a nerdy little boy with a plastic lightsaber hanging from his belt. I played SWG and enjoyed the hell out of it untill the infamous NGE. Bioware has always made good RPGs, it excites me that their breaking into the MMO industry with a franchise I know and love. The fact that they chose KOTOR as their game is even better. Man oh man Nar Shaddaa... this brings me back. Anyone ever play Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 online at the MSN gaming zone way back when? The lobby was called Nar Shaddaa and there was always so much activity there. Clan wars and whatnot. Good times.

I gotta be honest. After watching the multiplayer demo, the combat looked twitchy and awkward. At one point the Jedi Knight was facing off against the leiutenant and it reminded me of SWG with its many graphic glitches. I'm still hopefull for this game though, My faith in Bioware and my love for the franchise will make me a subscriber for sure. Time will only tell if it will rip me away from WoW though, and GW2 offers a pretty stiff competition, especially since its f2p.

The SWTOR MMO world is beginning to look pretty big. Guess they'll need all that room for all the subscribers.  ;)
