Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello mentioned that a "major new massively multiplayer online game" would not be shipping within EA's 2011 fiscal year, which ends on March 31st, according to a report by Joystiq. EA CFO Eric Brown later confirmed that Star Wars: The Old Republic is "not included in our FY11 release slate."
So there you have it folks, set your calendars to sometime between April and June next year, as we won't be playing Star Wars: The Old Republic for a little while yet.
This doesn't come as much of a surprise, though, as the game was originally slated for a Spring 2011 release window, and given the fact that Spring generally begins between the middle and end of March, the April to June timeline makes perfect sense. So, I guess if you expected it earlier than that, well, don't!
Sounds good to me, Better not to rush these things, and can maybe fix or add more to the game?
I dont mind. But what I do mind is how mindless the devs are being.
Meh
I best be darn solid at this rate as I feel they are draging their feet.
And this is without including any additional delays... :D
Oh my God! Say it aint so!!!! Noooooo!
Wait what do i don't give a damn about again?
Don't kid yourself. We will all be able to sit down and enjoy TOR 2011 holidays or better yet 2012.
So the destruction of everything in 2012 will be caused by the Sith?
I can live with that
They should just take their time and release it when they are ready, good for them on this =)
People need to learn patience =)
its already been rumored for a long time now that the release should be spring 2011, so i don't see how this is different or news.
There was some confusion as to whether or not the release estimation went by the Fiscal Year. As Mike said at the end, it doesn't really make much of a difference because the game could release in April or May, still considered a part of "Spring."
But it could ship in fiscal 2010 which goes through March 31st. I can't see them delaying it till 2012.
might go head-to-head with Guild Wars 2, as fans are predicting an April 2011 GW2 release, same date as GW1. no official release date yet though
I heard it was because Duke Nuk'em forever actually releases.
Still, this is no real news since there isn't anything that changes Spring 2011 in it. May 2011 is still spring. Of course it wouldn't surprise me if the date got moved back a few months, MMOs can be moved back years sometimes and this is a huge game.
Old news man.
Well, considering I wasn't expecting it until spring/summer next year this isn't any kind of shocker.
Have to agree with others who have said it though, better they take their time and deliver a quality product at launch then feed us another half baked pre-beta hardly playable game at launch like most recent releases have gone.
Though, now my sites are on GW2... If they can pull of all the sunshine they're blasting up my rear, no other will be able to compete, regardless of wether or not they have light sabres.
Probably just another mindless grinder anyway!
Q4 2011. Write it down.
I am sure when it launches there will still be people complaining they rushed it out..LOL
A game like this with so many different and new features, I expect not to see it until fall or winter of 2011, if at all in 2011. I just hope they get it out before December 21, 2012, I would like to play it before the end of the world...LOL
I suspect they are going to release it at or around the time the StarWars TV series hits. If I was in charge and I wanted to make giant unlimited fistfulls of cash, that's what I'd do. The whole StarWars universe is going to explode in the next couple years I'm sure. There's so much room for stories and the timing is just to close to be coincidence. Lucas might be a bit of a goof, but stupid he is not.

I would say probably more like a late 2011 game if then. Bioware will be lucky to get it out by xmas.
theres still something from bioware that states spring 2011 as the target date. if 2011 fiscal year ends in march that still gives us 2 months time frame :) As for when the tv series launches, they still havent started casting let alone finalized any scripts which is when lucas has said he will start ramping up production.
I'm not sure the company would rush the delivery of this huge project just to fit in this or that fiscal year. The game will be delivery when ready. 2012 is the likely year. And yes, by then, Sith will destroy life on Earth. At least is what they think. (double lightsaber sound heard in background).
No surprise there. The lame thing is I remember people on the official SWTOR forums swearing that the game would release way back in 2009. Keep dreaming noobs! See you in 2012.
Fiscal year 2010 for (the now) EA/BioWare ended began April 1, 2009 and ended March 31, 2010. So they can't still ship it in fiscal year 2010 - unless they have a time machine. Fiscal year 2011 is from April 1, 2010 - March 31, 2011. Fiscal year 2012 is from April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012 - which puts it exactly in the 2011 spring release window that BioWare has been quoting. Thus, the game should be coming out sometime between April 1 and June 20th, 2011. This quote des NOT mean that the game has been delayed until 2012.
Every other WoW player will buy this game. I have loved bioware since baldurs gate and I am excited to play a game that might let me roleplay without being Lol'd at. Only problem i see is that a lot of awesome MMO's will be out before then. But when its ready, its ready.
Not much of a surprise :)
Its BioWare, they like delays ^^ But personally did not expect it to come out anywhere before summer 2011 so not a shocking news to me.
meh, care. Not gonna be playing this instanced dumbed downed so-called MMO.
We just saw the report how Arenanet is planning to use dynamic public quest missions. We at Bioware want that too. So we are pushing the game back.
OMG YES!!!!
Surprised to see many positive comments here!
It's funny, if a less popular game - like Jumpgate: Evolution - gets pushed back, it gets ripped to shreds by the 'fans'. Shame some people can't just take things as they come and form an opinion on a game after release.
Like most people here I think delays are usually a good sign, not 'bad planning' or whatever other cliche crap some people like to suggest.
Good luck to SWTOR.
So basically its not being released in early 2011 . I bet many of us did'nt expect it to be out before the summer . My bets are on a release in the latter part of the year .
@Proson what a stupid thing to say , fair enough you don't want to play it but other than that only an idiot would call it dumbed down or instanced when theres very little information to go by at present as to what the game will be like .
They haven't pushed anything back, Sean (PR guy on TOR forums) came out a few months ago saying target date was spring 2011. Which means from March 21 - June 20.
So basically all this announcement did was cut the timeframe down to April 1 - June 20.
The seasons are all topsy-turvy in the Northern Hemisphere anyways. Sping 2011 here is anywhere from Sept-Nov - so a release earlier than that would be fantastic. ;)
I agree with the "It's ready when it's ready" philosophy...
*cough*STO*cough*
Just finished reading a thread on the STO Oboards where their marketing guy is saying it's ok to release an unfinished game because 'everybody's doing it'. That's unacceptable to me (and many others I'm guessing). MMO releases are in a sorry state right now.
We all know what happens when a MMO is rushed.
I say, push'r'back if it's not done.
Good on EA BioWare. Push it back. Get it FINISHED. Set the bar.
yay for more info
Oh great now i get to end KOTOR again while i wait .
What the hell is wrong with people? This isn't a delay.
I lol'd
If they release it in 2012 then they announced the game way too early. I can't see it coming any later than Summer 2011.
Agreed.
There is a guy that I know that revealed to me he was in Beta and while he wouldn't go into any details about gameplay (NDA), he did mention that he would be shocked if the game released by it's spring 2011 date. He stated that he couldn't see it being ready any earlier than the end of 2011, if at all and was of the mind that 2012 was a more realistic time frame. I first thought he was BSing me about the whole beta thing, but maybe he wasn't BSing after all.
If it's for the good reasons, thank you for aiming at releasing a completed game :)
I'm really really unsure about this game, and I think the MMO community is equating "pushing game back" to "a good MMORPG"... which simply isn't true. The box sales on this game are going to be through the roof with as much hype it has. However, I think i'm going to finally sit this one out, and see how it does on the market first. After being burned for the past decade on MMO flops, I should know better by now...
My friend still bet me that i'll buy the game on the day of release or at the very least the first week of release... We shall see. I just hope i'm wrong and finally get to see a good MMO that I enjoy.
Cracks me up. Fiscal Year 2011 which starts in October 2010. Why not just say Calendar year 2010 and be done with it. Anything after October 1st 2010 is FY 2011.
/facepalm
A company can start their fiscal year at any point in time they wish, for EA it's April 1st.
I don't know where you are getting October 1st from as your date, since most people would say July 1st since that is when the US government starts theirs.
Impatience to darkness leads young padwans!
they have already begun shooting, as part of it was shot in australia already. As per someone i know in the film industry
now this is funny...considering a) they aren't using the "alpha" or "beta" terms for testing, and testing outside of devs haven't started yet....so yes he was BSing
Aww, shucks. Fiscal year 2011 ends March 2011, yes?
Quite a wait, tbh. I had hoped maybe for end of 2010 or so. Must be the Emperor's plot! Damn you Sith Lords! XD
Guess I'll stick with WoW Cataclysm before TOR.
That's exactly what I thought. I specifically mentioned that to him and he assured me that they had started testing and he was among the testers. However, if I were a betting man, my money's on you.
I'd bet on people (like thegalaticstruggle.com and especially Darth Hater) that have actually had hands-on experience with it. The consensus is that, at this rate of development, the game will be well past complete by Spring 2011.
Or maybe they were just so overwhelmed by the opportunity to play it that their impressions can't be trusted. We'll see.
That's the best MMO news I've heard in a while. We all know how long Blizzard took to make and polish WoW. Pushing crap out the door early just doesn't work for MMOs these days. If it's broken or half-baked, people will walk away, and then tell all their online friends just how much the game sucked. Investors may as well just burn their cash and save time.
Imagine how well this will do if it's actually polished and content rich at release. All they'd have to do is stay away from a business model that feels like a sleazy cash-grab (e.g. performance enhancing RMT items, especially if they can be changed or deleted right after you "purchase" them).
