Guild Wars 2 News - Races of Tyria Trailer and Q&A

Posted by Michael Bitton on Dec 04, 2009  | 54 comments in our forums

This latest trailer for Guild Wars 2 explores the world of Tyria through the eyes of the five playable races in the game: the resilient Humans, the war-mongering Charr, the inventors known as the Asura, the shapeshifting Norn, and an entirely new nature spirit race, the Sylvari.

Watch the trailer here.

Check out the internal NCSoft Q&A giving more information about the video, here.

oh i dont know...i love the GW franchise, always will, but if the game isn't out for a while, that means i can go off and explore All Points Bulletin, DCU Online (possibly free..! we'll see), Word of Darkness Online, The Secret World, with out feeling guilty....as much as i love sharpening my pixelated sword and buckling my pixelated swash, i've been looking for a non-fantasy game i can afford...i can see my getting GW2 at some point regardless, even if it isn't at launch...ive had nothing but good experiences with GW and its community so Viva La Tyria! Cheers all!

Yea... that's really just you. At least your not one of those people that everytime GW2 gets on the most anticipated list on the main page a bunch of people create alt accounts just to vote it down.  MMORPG.com really needs to fix the way hype is determined.

I love it, looks amazing! The graphics are stunning, the dynamics of the lighting is really good.  I would have liked to have seen some more of the day night cycle, but I hear we will be seeing that in 2010.  As for release time NCSoft earning reports ear mark that only Blade and Soul will be released in 2010, so this is looking like a 2011 release :( I have chosen Sylvari as my race, probably Warrior (which they have hinted will still be a class) or something similar.  I am very excited about this.  I think I may also have to build a Norn at some point.  I really like their culture.

What the characters actual says and the style they do it in, is a little disapointing, especially for a fan like me that knows Guild Wars 1 well. Its like it needs some more polishing/tuning to get to me.

but with that said, it might do the job for people not knowing the game at all. But no matter how, the astonishgly beautyfull artwork will get to people no matter what!

I am looking so forward to this game

+1. But if you think Ncsoft has no word in the development of GW2 your dead wrong. The creators of Arenanet are now the CEO and President of NC West.

I'm just disappointed because I see concept art visionaries like Daniel Dociu and M. C. Barret working on this game, as well as an obviously capable asset/production art team, yet their talents get lost in translation.  The resulting world and story is completely uninteresting.  Oh no!  Evil dragon!  You must save the world!  "Glory!" "Your legend will live forever!" "Tyria needs heroes!" "Time to fight!".  Its a regurgitation of every other fantasy game ever made.  You've got your elves (Sylvari), your Dwarves/Gnomes (Asura), your Orc/Tauren (Charr), and the humans have been divided into holy warrior paladin types (Humans), and Vikings (Norn).  Add in plenty of cheesy place names like Divinity's Reach and Black Citadel.  Aren't people tired of this crap?  I found myself rolling my eyes all the way through both trailers.

In short, I'm not curious about this world.  I don't feel compelled to explore or experience it.  Its just more of the same.  The gameplay might be outstanding but the world and lore is trite.

And whose decision was it to take the job?? Maybe "generic high-fantasy drivel" is what they prefer and what they're good at.

Well no one but you labeled it generic. High-fantasy is the theme of the game, they took the job cause they need the money or they want to be a part of the team, no one forced them but themselves. Their talents aren't wasted as many people are waiting for this game. What do you expect of GW concept art? zombies? you like zombies?

When I watch the trailer I see a rehash of standard fantasy story of good vs evil where "you, too, can save the world!" complete with all the expected archetypes.  boring.

Well 1 had great Game play awesome team play. GvG etc just most people spazzed out over the linear part of the game and elitist morons couldn't handle 20 levels only (not meant to be a grinder) game is more tactical Skills wise. If GW2 comes even close to all that but with a actual World (non linear Areas)  to please the WoW types this game will Rocket to the top.

have you even played the first GW. I mean I don't know about the rest of the players but i found the lore and world simply amazing the lore is generic in a  sence that there are swords and magic but the world of Guild wars is beyond that. GW may have been one of the few games who story ment something and made people want to play. Ask how many people play WoW for "the story" Guild wars has a rich lore, which is going to be expanded by a large margin. you are hero yeah sure thats how the first one was, and do you know why people are not tired of it, why so many people still play this game instead of paying 15 dollars a month to play some shitty no story "rehash fantasy" BECAUSE the players love the story, gameplay, lore, character , classes everything. GW is still one of the best games out there maybe not for community but for the simple fun (still) fairly strong graphics, and a story that rivals that of single player RPGs + with great PvP of all kinds.

Now improve this game that i said above, with more races, better graphics, new story, and beyond massive PvP with World VS World. yeah you may see it as generic high fantasy, but i see it for my light in a world of bad poorly done online games by some developers who can't make up there mind.  If Guild Wars 2 fails (which i can tell you now It will not) I will for the rest of my life never touch an online game again

I guess you have never played Guild Wars before. If you have, I am kind of surprised by your comments.

At the moment ArenaNet are gradually dribbling information out about the game, and not all in one spot either. This trailer is just a small facet of the overall picture, somewhat explaining the races. I have a feeling once you get in game (when it is released) there will be a lot more than what they are showing now.
