Aion News - "Vision" Trailer Not Footage of Patch/Expansion

Posted by Michael Bitton on Dec 01, 2009  | 54 comments in our forums

Sure to disappoint many fans or even onlookers out there hopeful for a reborn Aion, the "Vision" Trailer recently released is not necessarily footage of a singular upcoming patch or expansion, as Aion Community Manager Sebastian "Ayase" Streiffert explains in a Twitter update, "The vision trailer is not a specific patch/expansion - it's a vision of what we're hoping to get out there in the future."

Also, according to another Tweet by Ayase there is currently no ETA for the implementation of any of the features shown in the "Vision" trailer. NCsoft simply wanted to share what they are working on with their fans, Ayase says.

UPDATE: For anyone confused as to whether or not the Vision trailer footage was actually rendered in-game, we'd like to clarify that it is. This article is simply stating that not necessarily all the features included in the Vision trailer will drop into the game as one large update or expansion.

I am also including Ayase's explanation, which you can find below:

I just want to reply and say that I think my tweets have been misinterpreted. I will admit that they're short and it's easy for such an unfortunate misinterpretation to happen, but I will also have it said that I'm not claiming this not to be in-game content, I'm merely saying it's not a specific expansion or patch (at this point).

I don't see how anyone who actually watched that trailer could think it would all be implemented 1) soon 2) all at once 3) all that stuff would ACTUALLY be implemented.

but to a degree you're right.

Edit - I at least have to give NC soft some credit, they're admitting this is what COULD happen not what WILL. People can't say down the road that they made broken promises.

If it is gameplay, then surely they have started to work on all of it, and if not then big fail on NCSoft.

It's more like machinima, and pre-rendered. This video is to show what "could" be acheived in the long term. It's to show off what the game engine is capable off.

Remember Age of Conan and those first DX10 videos? They were pre-rendered, Funcom is slowly acheiving their DX10 goal, but it took them a lot more time than anticipated.

See that is one big problem with the community, game companies released pre-rendered videos using game engine and a lot of people think it's the real deal running in real time.

I wouldn't go as far as saying companies are lying, let's say you're working on a project which has a time table of 4 years, you might as well pre-render your gameplay in the first year expecting the cpu/gpu industry growing fast enough so people could eventually run the game in real time at the end of that 4 years.

I think people are confusing movie trailers and game trailers...

Oh I don't know, it could very well be stuff that they have actually working well enough to "show' but because it is not fleshed out, bugs, not integrated into the game play as a whole that it won't be released for some time.

I mean, it's clear that these assets exist and as you are saying are being rendered in the game engine so "something" exists.

Sorry, I call shenanigans.

Developers are always so clear to point out when they show 'in-development' footage before a game's release.

Videos they put out AFTER the release when they're trying to get subs shouldn't be any less accurate.

This video is misleading.   If NCSoft wanted it to be a video of not-yet-implemented mechanics then they should SAY so.   Calling it a 'Vision' video is being deliberately obtuse since Aion marketing is already so full of flowery text.   A 'Vision' could be a vision of beauty as well as a vision of the future.

And don't think the PR types didn't know they were be misleading.     They may not be brightest bulbs but even stupid people know how to bend the truth.

Oh, I have no doubt that PR people skew the truth. I worked with the Vice President of Marketing for my company for several years on some aspects of her projects.

But when I see "vision" it seems to me that it is exactly that, a vision of what they see their product becoming. In no way shape or form did I infer that it was coming in any recent update, though some if it might come in the next update as they did say that they were going to be implementing housing and that they might have mounts though they wouldn't exactly be what players thought of as mounts (whatever that means).

No he didn't say that at all. He said that it's not a specific update where it all comes out at once. Some of these are features that NCsoft already said that they were developing earlier this year. It was a vision of what the game is becoming, and that's the entire purpose of the trailer. These are features already available on the developer servers, for the most part. This would also be too large for an update to come all at once, too many things could go wrong. So it would make sense that we see a feature here and a feature there until the vision is complete. You are right that there is no guarantee, but they wouldn't show things they couldn't and weren't planning on doing in the first place. It could be months, or even years before the vision is entirely complete, although I doubt it seeing as most of this stuff would be very easy to implement.

This is a vision of what is being worked on, not a specific preview for a patch.

That said, most of what is seen in the video IS in-game footage from gameplay and cinematics.  MMO development is always up in the air, though.  More could be added to this, it could be changed, or some could be dropped based on any number of factors.

The important thing to remember is they never claimed this was for any specific patch.  Some of this could be in the upcomming 2.0 patch, some not until 3.0 and beyond but if it was in the "Visions" trailer, it is being worked on in some way, shape or form.  Translations suggest that some of the content is as much as 80% done.

So no, this is not a trailer for an expansion or one specific patch, but most of it will be in-game as future updates roll in.  Keep an eye on upcoming patch notes over at AionSource for exactly what will be in when.

Sorry little noobs that wasn't part of the patch we mentioned shortly before and no it's not set in stone......further more it has nothing to do with the patch to allow flying pets.

NCsoft did one of 2 things there either they are completely stupid and didn't think since they had a patch planned soon for flying pets etc. that people would ( some ) assume that some of the trailer would be worked in. OR they knew it and the ave. IQ of aions player base ( read aion armory omg omg I jizzed comments all over ) and used that to bait the huge numbers who already left the game after the first month giving them some hope from a vision. It was a shallow attempt to get resubs same as with the little ban on bots, if I login after a few days of a "bot sweep" allowing them a few days to regain on a new account or even char. what they lost I am SURE AS HELL I will see just as many bots.

Take a point here GM KARMA from aion was on triniel (sp?) showboating "bot smashing" and if anyone was there like I was you could see the bs PR machine in working order, GM KARMA stated "stay here I will go to elyos and port you back botters" She returns with 1 bot and CLAIMS " I am having a hard time finding them there" SERIOUS I went to gather subella in BEL roof area and what do I see 30+ bots. So I make a mature and accurate local post and shop next to GM KARMA with a location on it, instead of banning the high end bots GM KARMA goes to panda to ban the 2-3 shops and goes for coffee or sleep etc. sorry doll you have the brains of a peanut if you cannot find bots and showboat removing them for the little kiddies, it never worked on me.

If you cannot see that was just PR to keep the community happy for a few days til it had a better idea then you are prolly still subbed to WARHAMMER and think paul is pvp king ( sorry he's a douche ) Like I posted before AION after the 16,000 "bot ban " did seem to make the servers in areas like ghost towns which makes me ask if said bots were banned the % balance they aimed for is correct as they worried about pvp balances people fail to view the real data like abyss control, legion points, player points, cause if they did they would see a huge inbalance.

In this industry PR is like a a crooked politician some of them can really BS you into thinking it's a shiny gold penny when we all know it's not even pure copper anymore. Bottom lne is NCsoft is full of crap only out to secure subs weather it's legit players or bots renewing cycle of ban, renew, ban renew. The trailer's timing was totally PR to save subs, same with the promise of flying pets, sadly people forget this game has been out for awhile in asia and in a way it's like a giant polished beta for the NA version ( yes I know there is some differences in code and language conversions ) But to say it's not is BS.

If NCsoft really wants to save face post true and accurate server data, give some realistic dates on fixes and get soem capable GM's banning the bots and not showboating pissing about wasting payroll like GM KARMA.

NCsoft, post the active subs and server populations in pure form no sugar, or coatings for everyone to see and when you do ban said bots the effect is seen. I see this game full of fail and just like warhammer servers in about 3 months. Hell already tried the server transfers then removed the option before it even went live cause they knew it's way one sided but feared how it would look for a 2 month old launch to have transfers and the backlash it would cause.

NCsoft you FAIL, go help feed the family.

On another note how would it have looked if warhammer or WOW released a "vision" a day or 2 before AION launched to keep people form leaving then state it might or might not be real. People would freak out, but I am sure it would be effective for said game and get alot of simple minded people who are easily convinced to resub......AION saw a serious issue with subs, and forum whine on bots, pvp and more and came out with that trailer at a ironic time right before the 2nd months sub date I mean really.......*bashes head*

Take a look at how eve online does trailers...or even WOW. Stuff they intend to do and mean it, eve has even released stuff like "visions" but they stick by it and make it work so props to EvE/WoW over the years for being true to it's player base. they don't do it when subs are low and a urgent issue is needed they do it on a steady base to keep the game fresh.

"VISION" merely means "Dream" or "idea".   There is nothing about the word itself that means a sure to be reality.

The Cry engine is amazing, and very well capable of doing everything we've seen in the trailer.  However,  as far as any time frame goes, hopefully we will all have Windows 7 with DirectX 11 and an upgraded vid card such as an ATI 5970 (currently the only vid card even capable of utilizing full DirectX 11) or an nVidia 300 series (which isn't ready, yet).

For all the gameplay stuff, if anyone here has ever played any of the other mmo's out there over the past few year, then you know it's NOT something we'll see all at once or soon.  But, it will happen and since all these "ideas" are something that are obviously planned or imagined (or they wouldn't be there in the first place) as being parts of expansions to make sure to keep players interested.  As a career game tester, I see this stuff all the time where bits and pieces of current buggy, unfinished code are rushed in one form or another for public viewing and freaks like some of the people here misunderstand what it is that's being shown in the first place.

I don't think "Vision" holds any real information about whether or not this will make it in.

For me, this trailer is reminiscent of the trailers released 3 years ago, they got us incredibly excited, along with the promises made by the dev team (aka: story driven, complete game questable, living environment, big world, flying pvp something really unique, great word pvp, dynamic pvpve system).

The current Aion sets few of those in stone, instead being a dumbed down game with little to do.

So this trailer really leaves kind of a bitter taste in my mouth.

I was going to maybe try Aion if it was going to be done in an upcomming expansion. Right now the game's just play ugly. The Animations suck, and it's just lacking anything to make me want to pay 15$ a month, buying the box or even downloading a 10GB client for a trailer.

They didn't say it was CGI material. They said that it's not footage of a planned specific patch or expansion.

They are fully free to upgrade the old engine. Just because the engine isn't capable of supporting it now, doesn't mean it won't in the future.

My thoughts exactly.

Unfortunately, in this day and age most people aren't very good at reading between the lines and/or thinking their way through things. In this regard, it never hurts for a company to be extremely direct, rather than vague about it's intentions.

I see what you did thar.  I guess a person would have to ask specifics... such as:

In regards to the content in the Trailer, "Vision", are those confirmed implementations to the Video Game, Aion? If the answer is yes, will they be delivered in the form of free DLC, or will they be part of a purchasable expansion pack?

If the content in the "Visions" trailer are not representative of the intended conceptual future of the video game, Aion, then what was the purpose for the creation and release to the public of the trailer, "Visions"?

If the content in the "Visions" trailer are not representative of the intended conceptual future of the video game, Aion, then what was the purpose for the creation and release to the public of the trailer, "Visions"?

Ncsoft's expansions are always free.

What do you think? Ofcourse not. All the stuff that you saw and isn't in the game yet, was just CGI material. As their current licensed game engine is so old, it doesn't even support it nor is it capable of supporting it.

But it's funny nonetheless, as I wonder how many sucke....ehh people insta resubbed to AION after drooling over this video and thought it would be the next expansion. LOL.

Cheers

They didn't say it was CGI material. They said that it's not footage of a planned specific patch or expansion.

They are fully free to upgrade the old engine. Just because the engine isn't capable of supporting it now, doesn't mean it won't in the future.

That is the problem. Cry Engine 1 cannot be simply upgraded to Cry Engine 2 and sure as hell not to the new Cry Engine 3!

As CryTek started from scratch with Cry Engine 2 and rebuild it from the ground up. And so not compatible for upgrade from Cry Engine 1!

So upgrading to either Cry Engine 2 or 3 or even a completely different engine will be an ENORMOUS task. Almost like completely starting from scratch. Not to mention the costs and resources it will involve.

Cheers

Hmmm... Something tell me I should skip on this one...Anyway.

-This trailer is not CGI (Computer-generated imagery) it is probably a render using the cryengine engine.

-All you've seen in the trailer can be done in CryENGINE 1.3 and that's probably the one they are using in Aion.

-GodRays and HDR effect are not limited to DX10, they can be done under DX9 (Many reviewers proved the point when they released Crysis(game) and some people were able to almost get the same results in DX9 than DX10.)

-CryENGINE can be upgraded and modded you can go from CryENGINE1 to CryENGINE2 without having to start from scratch

-Quote from wikipedia:"CryEngine2 is a game engine. It is an extended version of the CryEngine, the game engine behind Far Cry. CryEngine2 has been used for Crytek's game, Crysis; an updated version is used in Crysis Warhead, an expansion of Crysis; also the MMORPG Entropia Universe and Aion recently upgraded its graphics to the CryEngine 2." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CryEngine_2

This is just a a pre-rendered footage using the in-game engine there are no "real" mechanics at work, they are showing you what they envision the game in the future. Is this so hard to understand?

Now the PR and Marketing dept. release the trailer as Aion Vision... And yes this trailer is a marketing tool. Get over it, everytime you drink a beer do you see 12 super hot chicks showing up in bikini in your backyard? When you spray AXE you girls get naked around you?

Are you 12 years old and believe Star Wars was actually filmed in space with real spaceship and all?

All we want to know if this is actually inengine footage or if we're looking at a target render CGI?

Eye of the North was not a stand alone, nor a free patch. You lost The Game.

Factions and Nightfall, technically stand alone games, still are intertwined with the first campaign Prophecies. It's the same game, mechanics, interface, and gameplay-wise... just different content. Bullshit semantics aside, Guild Wars consisted of 3 stand alone expansion packs, and one true expansion pack. Then there's the Bonus Mission Pack, which early on you had to purchase X amount of goods (more char slots, unlocks with pvp, whatever) in order to unlock the BMP.

Now Guild Wars 2, has promises of many changes as well as graphics upgrades.

So again... the questions arise,

------------------------------------------------

Is the content in "Visions"...

Content that WILL be added to the PC game "Aion: The Tower of Eternity"

*in the form of a PATCH

*in the form of a PURCHASABLE UPGRADE

OR

Content that will be introduced in the form of an EXPANSION PACK (like Shadows of Luclin) that requires Aion: The Tower of Eternity to work

OR

Content that will be introduced in the form of a STAND ALONE EXPANSION PACK (like Factions or Nightfall) that can function without Aion: The Tower of Eternity"

OR

Content that is NOT INTENDED to be introduced to the PC game Aion: The Tower of Eternity, but a separate entity/sequel such as Guild Wars 2

-----------------------

If none of the above, then what the hell was the purpose of releasing "Visions"? If it was just a PR stunt to create "buzz and hype" about the game, then I think it was a failed marketing move. Just two (2) months after release, you release a trailer with tons of upgrades to the current state of game. Two months after release, you show how awesome a brand new game COULD be... but no ETA or even confirmation that is is or is not "confirmed future in game content".

That kind of marketing move may have worked 10 years ago, but pulling that now when the majority of any MMO playerbase have played quite a few MMO's is a little silly. You potentially piss off the current subs, raise doubt in potential subscribers about motives and intentions of the future of the game, and further confuse people about the true intentions of the release of the Video while neither confirming nor denying ANY interpretation of reason... like it's some official review from a government panel that's worthy of giving cryptic and vague responses to in order to avoid accountability or responsibility. But I doubt he'll even read or care about the post let alone answer it, his last post before his recent "Damage Control" post on here was almost 8 months ago.

Making promises putting in excellent content with no ETA or fixing the game to the point of where it "should" have been upon release and it'll go down the road of Hellgate:London and Tabula Rasa.

But to all of you who are currently playing Aion, I want to thank you. You are supplying the finances to keep the game running and evolving so I don't have to. When the game finally looks like it's good enough to play and fixed the way it should be, then I'll pick up my copy. If the trailer is just "smoke and mirrors" advertising to get people to resub, or pick the game up for the holidays, oh well it's not my dime!

"everytime you drink a beer do you see 12 super hot chicks showing up in bikini in your backyard? When you spray AXE you girls get naked around you?"

If you are comparing a beer or deodorant commercial to that of the "Visions" trailer... then lets take a look at your logic.

"they are showing you what they envision the game in the future. Is this so hard to understand?" I guess not. So since the reality of women getting naked when I drink beer or use deodorant is absurd and impossible, the reality of Aion  being anything like that of the trailer Visions, to you, is equally absurd and impossible. So to you, the reason the trailer "Visions" was made was just to get players to fantasize about what the game COULD be like, but in reality will never or could never be.

I guess that's what's confusing about the whole trailer. There are two ways of viewing it. Either it's smoke and mirrors bullshit, like you said... or it's what they're planning on putting into the game. If it's smoke and mirrors, then people will rage hard. If it's actual stuff they are going to put in game, but no where in the near future, then it's a slap in the face to the current subscribers. Also being cryptic about it just further raises doubt.

Yep pretty much it, we're not gonna see the game in the exact state they are showing us in the video...  I'm glad someone else get it. Doesn't mean part of it, portion or concept won't be included in the future. Just that we won't see the game as presented in the video.

Have you ever seen those mmo trailers where the hero is talking to the npc, where everything is like a story unfolding? Well I have yet to see that in-game too, but the assets the npc are actually in the game, it's not as cinematic as the trailer.

Have you ever watched the AoC trailer with the rogue chick (Femme Fatale), the one that kill the drunken dude at the end?

-She's arriving to Tortage on a boat (There is no boat traveling in AoC)

-She kills another player in the city (There is no open PvP in cities)

-NPC interacting to player as she walk by (They only interact if you click on them and through a quest log window, some with audio)

-NPC reacting to the wound grasping his chest in pain (Yeah right...)

Would you prefer to see a trailer with shoulder cam in game and see a player walk and accept quest, grind mobs etc? Probably but it seems the majority of the consumers out there wouldn't like that, one european mmo did that last year and failed miserably with sells, I'll give ya a hint it was feature on this website and had a rolling deck for combat system.

People want to buy dreams, promesses to feel better.

It was a bad PR move in the long run. A good portion are already calling bullshit. The hopefuls are going to resub or buy the game based on that trailer just in time for christmas, and will rage when nothing is put into the game as what promised in the trailer.

I mean seriously, ETA or no ETA... If you show something like that, the current subs are going to question what they're paying for and if they're already disgruntled by the state of game then showing them how cool their game "could" be isn't going to make them any more positive about what they're paying for.

By putting out that trailer, NCsoft has effectively told me that they are working on something better than what they have to offer now. I will wait until such a time, and many potentials probably will too. It's a massive risk lost revenue across the board and in the long run, all for getting a few sales in before Christmas. I mean I'm not trying to call Ayase out, he's just doing his job. But there must have been an Abilene paradox on a massive scale when this "Vision" was conceived and released.

Ncsoft's expansions are always free.

The thing is, he said the content is not for a patch or expansion. By that, he might mean that the content shown in the trailer is not the content for a specific patch or expansion, not that the content won't be released through patches and expansions.

Ofcourse the trailer is meant to buzz and hype, that's what trailers are for.
Also, Keep in mind that this trailer was shown at G star. G star is a korean gaming event, Aion has already bee released in Korea for well over a year.

With that said, NCsoft is being very vague about this which is very annoying.

The goal of every trailer of any game that is already released is to make the viewer believe something better is on the way than they are already playing. The whole point of it is to show something new and better, not just more of the same.

It works like that for any trailer of any update or expansion.

This is an excellent PR move, because it gives players something to look forward to.

But Ayase saying "but I will also have it said that I'm not claiming this not to be in-game content, I'm merely saying it's not a specific expansion or patch (at this point)." is easily construed as "I will neither confirm not deny that it is intended in-game content. There is no ETA".

Like I said, I'll pick up the game when they're finished. Till then, thank you all who are current subs that are beta testing for me till a more polished product is released. Nice to know they're goofing around with making hype trailers for the holidays instead of cleansing that bot problem of theirs. But oh well, not "my" problem.

Guild wars is not P2P how would they get some money if they made everything free on it?

Go look in any online store you want and tell me:

Does CoX has any expansion?

Does Lineage 1 & 2 has any expansion?

Yea right.. none! because they were always free

Be thankfull that guild wars didn't had a cash shop and only made you pay for the expansions.

With all this talk about NcSofts awesome PR, it reminds me of the old Lineage 2 box. The one implying you can fly around in a dragon. Yeah a few Cs later we could fly on them....if you were 1 of the 5(then) castle lords. 5 people out of thousands, you have a better chance of getting a hot date sitting in the basement of your parents house while playing WoW.

I think NCSoft is getting more PR out of the flames from the people upset about the game than they ever got or ever would have gotten from the trailer itself. I hadn't even realized the trailer was out or watched it until after all screams of righteous indignation started.

I enjoyed the vidoe and was glad to see some of the ideas that they are considering but I no more considered the video to be a promise of things to come than I expect to see game play as depicted in many of the WoW trailers that Blizzard release. But, I found those trailers also to be very effective and got me into the right frame of mind and mood to want to be that hunter on the screen or that druid doing battle. The fact that when I got into the game it didn't have that cinematic scope was never an issue for me and I don't see this trailer for Aion or for any other game in the future being any different.

Maybe for their next production they can film the GMs banning people that way they can combine two PR events into one film.

All of the features shown in the trailer were mentioned pre - release, that's pre korean release. NCsoft stated in an interview that housing, swimming and mounts were in the work and would come after release. What I think Ayasa is saying is that it is not a specific patch or expansion.

The game is finished. What the trailer shows is future content, saying that current players are beta testing is just as ignorant as saying WoW players were beta testers before the Burning Crusade, and they were beta testing again until Wrath of the Lich King came out.
Bot problem has for the most part been fixed.
