World of Warcraft News - Warcraft Film Details, Release Date

Posted by Michael Bitton on Oct 02, 2009  | 28 comments in our forums

A number of new details on the Warcraft film have surfaced over at IMDB. Two major details about the film have surfaced, one, the film's release date, which is targeted for 2011. The other, the film's name, which will be "Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King".

All the above information still remains unofficial as there haven't been any official announcements yet, but Medievaldragon at WorldofWar.net makes a pretty good case for the film's name:

The film is approximately slated for 2011 according to IMDB. This title gives us an idea that the film will be somehow based on some of the scenes of World of Warcraft: Rise of the Lich King novel by Christie Golden, which contains heavy references to scenes from Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. A film based on Arthas as a main figure is definitely attractive to the audience, either to fans or to viewers new to the fantasy storyline. The life of Arthas is one saturated of tragic things that led him to take different type of choices. Some that drove him to the brink of insanity, shredding away the last vestiges of his humanity, taking an oath to give up his soul if he was empowered to slay the enemy that destroyed his land, and if it allowed him to save his people by wielding the runesword known as Frostmourne.

Via Blue's News.

I think Medievaldragon makes a pretty good case, and as someone who isn't particularly a fan of Warcraft the story of Arthas actually sounds like it would be compelling enough to want to see. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

All I can say is that it better be CGI animated.  If it isn't, it will just be forced to join the ranks of crappy live action video game movies with horrible actors and a flimsy storyline.  If they can make it look like the CGI from WC3 though....or better....well then that's a different story altogether.

Pretty sure it was confirmed as live-action awhile ago.

Haha, this might actually be pretty hilarious, I'm looking foward to it. The nightmare begins! He was in Doom, now, The Rock is Arthas! Lets hope it turns out great. >.>

Awww...I haven't kept up with it (obviously), but that's sad news.  Another one bites the dust.  Although maybe they could get Christian Haydensen to play Arthas...  I hate them!  I hate them so I killed them!  Whine whine whine.

So....I gather from the 'story' that it is about Anakin. *snicker* (referring to the Christian post....laughed my ass off)

As long as they stay away from Ron Perlman it shouldn't be too bad. =0

LOL yeah so that it would only be showing for 1 day for the people that are still able to watch movies. The world will not be destroyed but it will be the end as we know it. The Illuminati will be starting the New World Order. Or nothing will happen at all I really don't know but all I say is its better to prepare yourself just in case something crazy like that does happen.

I was thinking of checking out a Masonic Temple my great grandpa was a Freemason and I don't think anyone else in my family was one or followed in his footsteps. But hey maybe joining a secret society might help out if this whole 2012 thing is actually happens.

@ Darkdamsel   yeah Bruce rocks, he had cameo's in the Spiderman movies. So lets keep our fingers crossed.

If this is a live action, literal translation of Warcraft....wow, it's going to look SO cheesy on the big screen.

As if we needed more Lich King, Christ Metzen claimed this would take place between WC3 and WoW and would be a new story, now I understand things change, but what else can we say about Arthas Menethil that hasn't been said already? Sure you want to make it live-action and just show Arthas another way, but the story isn't THAT interesting, and I was really hoping they'd try and at least patch together what is left of Warcraft lore.

Definitely not paying to see the same story in a third version.

It's not made by Uwe Boll, so it might actually be good.

Interesting, if they do a movie of the rise and fall of Arthas. I wonder how they'll "End" the lich king in the movie...will it be similar how he'll be killed off in the MMO? interesting stuff.

They will end the movie with a scene of 25 guys taking Arthas down and then collecting loot off the body, distributing it by DKP and then someone yelling out "Bio break!"

Well, if starwars can be real life and CGI together and look nice,  i couldnt see why this movie cant do the same thing...

I was thinking about the same while reading the thread. Fo sure it will be interesting to see. Actually whatever the plot is, still the movie will be interesting. To see the things we've done in this game in a movie. Epic! :)

The Rock....Thrall....Bio....amfg LOLOLOL.  *cough* Sorry....is what I get for having an extremely vivid imagination. *still snickering*

Why not just have Jack Black do Arthas. lol  IN PURE AWESOMENESS!!  Hee hee. (not saying anything bad, I personally love Jack)

Don't forget /afk just as a tank gets aggro on the 'boss'.

Okay seriously though, I also thought about the LoTR thing....how they COULD make it epic IF they did everything right and took the time needed to make it big screen-worthy.  I mean hell, even LoTR didn't get 'everything' in the movies yet they stayed as close to the books as they could if that makes sense.

They just have to be prepared for the griping of the hardcore WoW players when they all wipe cos the healer sucked or the tank couldn't hold aggro. lolol  (sorry again....I know this is a semi-serious thread but I just cannot help it)

You'll have to wait and see. Its a little early for Doom and Gloom.

One problem...Someone posted on the worldofwarcraft.com forums after they saw this and a Blue replied with something like "No more Arthas." They've also stated before that they wanted it to follow the adventures and quests of a Human Warrior.
