World of Warcraft News - Blizzard Won't be at E3 This Year

Posted by Keith Cross on Feb 06, 2009  | 15 comments in our forums

Blizzard has announced that they will not be attending this year's E3 event, despite the previous statements from parent company Activision that confirmed Activision's involvement in the show.

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment has stated that it will not be attending the newly expanded E3 2009 event, just days after merger partner Activision confirmed their involvement.

Although Blizzard owner Vivendi Games became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision in July of last year, Blizzard has continued to operate largely autonomously. Even so, it was assumed that Activision's confirmed E3 attendance also included Blizzard, who regularly attended the event during its heyday.

Blizzard confirmed its plans to pass on E3 with a single sentence statement to consumer website Giant Bomb: "Blizzard Entertainment will not be attending or participating in E3 2009".

Well makes sense really, why would they attend E3, when they have their own conventions, probably the largest convention now since E3 crumbled.  Hell Blizzcon and blizzard invitational  are the only places where they are going to show any proper stuff of their games, other than if they attend leipzig or GDC.

Your forgetting that they made E3 larger this year then it was before they made it invitation only.

Well I hate to hear that, I would like to have heard some more news on Diablo 3, but I guess it conflicts with their own cons.

Shrug, E3 did this to themselves when they shrank it to invite only. Now companys no longer respect the event.

They are, their games are very well programmed, lots of dedication (not saying other companies dont) but that could be their downfall too.

They have such a huge hype to live up to that they cant do anything but live up to it. Indie companies who release games can still compete with Major companies such as Bioware with their Baldur's Gate and now their upcoming games Star Wars MMORPG and Dragon Age Origins are going to go with blizzard's mantra “It’ll ship when it’s ready,”. As its simply what the consumer expects from the companies.

Im defending blizzard simply because of the question, do they really need add more hype to the massive amount of hype they already got from their own conventions?

Why is Blizzard owned by any large cooporation anyway? Is it because they needed the extra funding in the past and now they can't break a contract?

Because I have that freedom, I am here to dissagree with you shadow.  Blizzard is not awesome or leet.

Every year one class is left amazingly gimp which would be fine if there were dozens of classes, but last count they had less than 10..meaning some of your guildies are going to be useless every year..that part made me sad when I played..

Anywho I will say they have good marketing.

you cant just break off from the situation that they are in.  They are owned by Vivendi which in turn is (partially) owned by Activision.  In order to escape you need to make a new company and some of the developers did this (some of Guild wars' creators were ex WoW devs).

anyway as for E3, i never really took much notice of it (Living in Australia, you dont really care all that much about conventions as we dont get any ).
