Age of Conan: Unchained News - Conan Servers Cut in Half

Posted by Keith Cross on Jan 14, 2009  | 14 comments in our forums

Funcom recently announced that many of Age of Conan's servers would be merged in the near future, and now they have published a list of those servers, revealing that the game will lose more than half of its servers.

As you probably have heard, we merged the two US servers 'Bloodspire' and 'Hyperborea' on 7th of January. We monitored the new server closely and can confirm that the merge was going very well and without issues. So we will now proceed with the next steps for the other servers.

Firstly, we present you the list of the planned servers to be merged (see below). We will proceed with merging next week and the specific date and time as well as the expected downtime will be announced soon too. As a general information we can already say that the plan is to merge all EU servers in one go and all US servers in another go.

Again like with EQ2 I don't understand why they need more than one... just have one server that clones the same zone over and over again as each one becomes more popular.

I don't know why everyone doesn't do this. Especially with EQII that has instanced zones.

i basicly agree but:

- some mmos have language based servers
- conan has ruleset and location based servers

while it probably would be a good thing to have only one of these
- NA PVP Server
- NA PVE Server
- NA RP Server
- EU PVP Server
- EU PVE Server
- EU RP Server

youd still need these 6 server types at minimum not to speak about other types of servers they introduced like cultural PVP server and PVE/PVP- RP servers)

i think looking back funcom would probably be happier if they could merge servers even more but the feedback from the community would be pretty harsh if theyd remove certain rulesets like CulturalPVP or RP-PVP and force these people to a regular PVP server.

Bane cultural server was merged in to Cimmeria, so that Cultural has gone, and to be honest looking like without not much of a fuss. But you're right in that server types are needed. Only other difference is that the US does not have a PVE-RP server where as EU does, with both still having PvP-RP servers.

Well, as it's too long since I've played AoC, I forgot if there are region restrictions on the servers.

If so, then Funcom should just remove them, so US RP'ers can join the EU RP-PVE Hyrkania server.

That server can really use some more people, as it's the only server that isn't merged... they still have a very low population.

Just my 2cents

Noone ever Role Plays on RP servers so you can get rid of them so basically all you need is PVE and PVP servers then EU and US servers and give access between the two so you don't split up guilds, friends and so people from the UK who speak english can play on the US servers instead of having to be banished to the EU servers where it is hard to find people who want to speak English.

That you clearly don't like to RP doesn't give you the right to say that no one RP's and that those servers should be removed!

On Hyrkania people actually do RP and still organise events.

It just suffers from a low population. That's all.

It doesn't give you the right to screw them over by saying that server should be removed!

When I played AoC this server was one of the best servers around, with a very mature and friendly community. Wich you can hardly say of the average PVP server full of Epeen Gankers bad mouthing all over the place.

Cheers

Truly Im sad that this is my prediction, I played AoC but in a month of casual play maxxed two characters and simply did everything the game had to offer.  WIth no endgame, I merely stopped playing as I considered myself to have finished AoC.

Beautiful game, excellent combat interface, ZERO endgame content.

Completly agree, lack of content (meaningfull long term) is AoC's problem,I guess there is more stuff to do at end game now,but when I played (lvled 3 chars to max)... there wasnt much to do at end game... and I quit out of boredom.

There's a lot of us (the current but mostly former AoC players) who love the game and are still a bit disenheartened knowing what this MMO could become.  At FunCom, Morrison & company are making strides.  Even the most jaundiced of AoC followers agree that Morrison and his team are the best thing that could have happened to an otherwise clearly doomed MMO.  These server merges have been necessary for many months -- but I applaud FunCom/AoC staff (unlike their former behavior under Gaute) -- in polishing the game, they're being cautious and deliberate and, while I applaud that, it frustrates some people.

I haven't returned to AoC yet.  I'm still holding off for just a bit more polishing of the game.  But I likely will return soon.  Meanwhile, I'm monitoring the game's progress!

No US RP-PvE server was the first nail in the coffin for my husband and I.

Second nail in the coffin was elite grey mobs.

Neither of these things have been addressed, so... no money for you, Funcom!

There are a lot of US and Canadian players on the Hyrkania server - I assume they bought the game in Europe.

Problem with them being around eight hours behind it does not help limiting late nights )

BTW there appears more players now on the server then ever - it has a healthy number and many are low levels and new players.

Our small friendly light RP guild is growing everyweek. 'The Lost Souls' if anyone is interested - please post message to Koolt)
