World of Warcraft News - Overachievers of Azeroth

Posted by Jon Wood on Nov 18, 2008  | 14 comments in our forums

MMORPG.com World of warcraft Correspondent Deborah Dietrich writes this quick look at the Achievement system in Blizzard`s massive hit MMORPG.

With the Echoes of Doom update, Blizzard has introduced an achievement system to World of Warcraft. I have to admit I think it was a brilliant move. In the month leading up to Wrath of the Lich King, this new system has introduced freshness to a game that was starting to feel a bit stale.

I freely admit, I’m a Girl Scout. I was a scout from Brownies till high school and I always loved earning badges. This new achievement system is just a big badge fest. We don’t get a badge sash, exactly, but we get that nice achievement button on our tool bar. Plus, we can compare our achievements with those of others by right clicking on their name bar and choosing the Compare Achievements link. Pretty cool.

At present there are 750 different achievements with more to be added in the future. Achievements are worth points based on their difficulty. Checking your Achievements button you can see how many of the different achievements you have completed (150/750 for example) or the total number of achievement points you have garnered. Additionally, many achievements come with a title that can be displayed as part of your character’s name. Some achievements even come with an item like a special pet, a mount or a tabard.

Yes, how DARE anyone take a little pride in accomplishing things while pursuing a hobby. How dare anyone brag about that incredible half-court shot they made two weeks ago, how dare anyone talk about that incredible hole-in-one they got at the golf course yesterday, and how dare anyone talk about how their team won that game last night.

Seriously, do you want to know why the "good gamers can only be those who live in their mother's basement" BS still exists? It's because gamers feel threatened that anyone takes their hobby more seriously than they do, so they must ridicule them.

I think the achievement system is a great thing for any game to give people things to strive for. Good for WoW, WAR, EQ2, LotRO, and the others that have them.

I wonder how long it will be before the WoW Fanboys start saying WoW invented the achievement system and that all other MMO's are ripping them off...

</sarcasm>

Honestly though it is nice to see them finally impliment such a system.  If I wasnt having fun with WAR I could possibly see myself reactivating just to see how many achievements I could grind...

Didn't LOTRO and then WAR already do this?

If you want to get technical about it ....madden football has been doing it for years also. Its fun and something else different in the game .... I really could care less who did it before Blizzard.

I stopped reading after this. Why are most recent articles on this site written by completely clueless writers? For those who doesn't know what I'm talking about, take a look at the one about warlocks in WoW, or crafting in EQ2. Just to mention two...

finally.  took them long enough to implement it.

on a side note i do like Achievements, they are nice in their own special ways and a nice big MMO allows for people to have some fairly unique ones (like complete all quests in X zone and there are X number of those zones to choose from or discover X location in a sparsely populated area)

Blizzard really loves milking cows, eh? Let me guess, the next system they add will be some system that upgrades your weapon from +1 to +2. Or how about a dual class system, only a few games have that. So they might of glanced over that one till it becomes more popular. Now after reading this you should get the question I asked. I have no hate for Blizzard or World of Warcraft. Some of my funnest moments were from both World of Warcraft and Dark Age of Camelot. I would just think that a company like Blizzard, with all the subs they rave about, would use maybe an ounce of that cash flow to hire someone to develop a system that hasnt been used. It makes me wonder if they can even come up with thier own idea's or not. Is anyone at Viviendi throwing around new idea's or what?

Now it's not bad to duplicate ideas. We as humans do it on a daily basis. But for once I would love to see Blizzard go to the extreme or the edge as they say. Shock us with something, anything. I just cant believe that they cannot find one new idea. Now I have played Wotlk, and it's ok. But it just doesn't feel like an expansion to me. Thankfully I was playing on a friends account, and took back my copy before I opened it. Kinda shocking to notice I was one of four returning the same game that day. The cashier had a puzzled face, but then I noticed he was a WoW fanatic and was playing it on a laptop to the side.

Cmon D3, it better be good.

Why on earth would you pick up a game you had so many reservations about. You picked it up , then played it on a friends computer without installing it on your own? Then you take it back to the store? Wouldn't it make more sense to play it on your friends comp first , then decide on whether to pick it up or cancel your preorder/not pick it up?

Not saying it didn't happen , just seems odd.

Love how people yell at blizzard for not being "creative"...what game out there is creative since pac man.  Everyone takes some other idea and tweaks it for their game and moves on.  Creative is another name for risk.  Why would a successful game want to risk.  That is why WAR is so toned down and unoriginal along with all the other games from big name companies.  No one wants to take that risk.  Risk takers are start up companies that fail 90% of the time.  Let them risk while the big boys reap the rewards of their work.

As to the money of Blizzard.  I am a stock hold of virindi universal and the home company VU was in horrible debt before the game came out.  I am sure a lot of the cash is being used to bail out VU and fund their European motion pictures branch that barely breaks even.
